Police investigate attack on Sincar's house<br />

ANKARA- Police are investigating an attack<br />
in the Southastern town of KlZIltepe in<br />
Mardin on the home of a mur<strong>de</strong>red Kurdish<br />
<strong>de</strong>puty whose funeral ceremony in Ankara<br />
was.banned last week by officials.<br />
Five !eople, including a child, were<br />
woun<strong>de</strong> in Friday night's attack, which was<br />
carried out with bombs and guns allegedly<br />
after police and gendannerie protection for<br />
the house was lifted.<br />
Kurdish-based Democracy Party (DEP)<br />
DeputyLeyla Zana, who was staying at the<br />
house of the late Mehm<strong>et</strong> Sincar, escaped<br />
the attack without injury. But Kurdish activists<br />
claim she was tile main targ<strong>et</strong> of the assault<br />
and suspect there may have been local<br />
official tolerance.<br />

Last week, Sincar's body was flown from<br />
Ankara to his burial site in KlZIltepe by security<br />
officials, and laid to rest there after a<br />
funeral in which his relatives and colleagues<br />
did notparticipate.<br />
Authorities banned DEP and his family<br />
from carrying out a pre-planned funeral ceremony<br />
for Smcar in Ankara. He was killed<br />
along with a local DEP executive, in th~<br />
eastern province of Batman the previous<br />
Saturday while investigating the mur<strong>de</strong>r of<br />
~nother ~a~y official. At I~ast 5.4DEP-affillated<br />
activists have been killed m the region<br />
over the past two years.<br />
"The invisible state is trying to create a<br />
provocation here and to frustrate the people.<br />
We will not allow this," Zana, one of the<br />
most oUlsJXlkenKurdish MPs in Parliament<br />
said after the attack. '<br />
Interior Minister Mehm<strong>et</strong> GazioUu said,<br />
on the. other hand, that certain circles were<br />
attempting to sow seeds of discord b<strong>et</strong>ween<br />
Turks and Kurds with the bombing.<br />
"We believe those who have interests in<br />
damaging the good relations b<strong>et</strong>ween Turks<br />
and Kurds were behind the inci<strong>de</strong>nt" Gazioglu<br />
~d. Zana was quoted by the p~o-Kurd-<br />
Ish Olgür Gün<strong>de</strong>m daily as saying after the<br />
bombing that <strong>de</strong>puties Ahm<strong>et</strong> Türk, Mahmut<br />
KJ!mç and Selim Sadak were staying in separate<br />
houses.<br />
. "At about 23:45, while watching televi-<br />
Sion, I heard an explosion. Then I heard two<br />
more !xplosi~ns. Later I ~eard five or six<br />
shots, she said. The Kurdish MP explained<br />
that the women were sleeping on the Oat<br />
roof of the house, as is traditional in the<br />
Southeast, while the men were insi<strong>de</strong>.<br />
"The bombs were thrown on the -rool<br />
among the women," Zana said.<br />
