Purchase of Swiss-made
spy-plane is suspended

ANKARA- The Turkish government has
suspended the purchase of a Swiss-made reconnaissance
plane, because of the restrictions
that the Swiss government may put on its use,
official sources said on Tuesday. '
, The Pilatus plane, equipped with Westinghouse
instruments, whIch provides facilities
for day and night reconnaissance of land targets,
was to be used for border security, especially
along Turkey's border with Iraq and
Iran. This expanse ofTurkey's border is where
the outlawed (PKK) militants infiltrate the country
to conduct armed attacks aoainst Turkish
citizens. Officials. who askeâ not to be
named, noted that Switzeriand had 'placed an
anns embargo on Turkey before, clalming that
the m!litary material sold to Turkey was being
used In suppressing the Kurdish uprising in
Southeast Turkey. The Swiss gov'ts sensitivity
over the use of Swiss-made 25,mm Oerlikon
machine guns for the annored combat vehicles
under production in Turkey was a factor in
the decision of the Turkish ~ov't to sign an alternate
deal with the Frencn company GIAT
last year. Turkish concerns are also based on
claims by government sources that the Swiss
government has interfered with Pilatus' contacts
with some Southeast Asia countries, endangering
those purchases. For example,
Switzerland is opposed to the company's putting
additional fuel tanks underneath the
wings of the plane, saying that they could just
as well be used as pylons for weapon pods.
PKK raids villages, kills ten people

ANKARA- Militants of the outlawed Kurdistan
Workers' Party (PKK) on Monday raided the village
of AkçaYlr near Sirvan, Siirt, killing seven
people, five of them children, and wounding
three others. "
According to the announcement from the Office
of the Emergency Rule Regional Governor,
two of the raiders were killed by the village
guards. Also on Monday, security forces killed
eight separatist terrorists while freeing two Britons
and two Afghans reportedly kidnapped hours
earlier by the terrorists. The abducted tourists
were flown to DiyarbakIr by helicopter where
they answered reporters' questions.
One of the Afghan tourists said they had come
to Turkey to see their relatives in Van. One of the
British tourists said he and his friend had gone to
Van for a sightseeing tour.
As a result of the security operations, security
forces killed two more terrorists. The Britons
were believed to be returning from a visit to Lake
Van. The Afghans use the same route after entering
Turkey from Iran.
In a separate incident on Monday, PKK militants
stopped vehicles on the highway close to
the town of Dogan~ehir, Malatya, and killed one
person and wounded two others. Malatya Governor
Saffet Ankan Bedük said that the separatist
terrorists set a tanker loaded with diesel fuel on
fire. PKK militants also raided a village near Ihç,
Erzincan, and killed the parents of the village
headman (muhtar). Erzincan Governor Recep
YazlclOglu said that the terrorists escaped after
clashing with the village guards.
In Istanbul, police arrested 29 persons who
were determined to have participated in the activities
of the illegal PKK organization. They were
caught as they were trying to slage a demonstration
to mark the foundatIon anniversary of the
iDITOS

In Adana, police caught 20 PKK militants, two of
them women. According to the announcement
from the office of the security director, among
the arrested militants were some of the organization's
regionalleaders.
Republican People's Party (CHP) Parliamentary
Group Deputy Chairman Ali Dinçer said
Tuesday that the people in Turkey's southeast region
have lost their confidence in the state. In a
Joint press meeting he held with CHP Kars Deputy
AtIlla Hun, Dmçer explained their observatIons
during their four-day visil in the region. He
claimed that people were abandoning the region
because their lives were in danger.
