ANKARA- Turkish hotels and other
tourist -related businesses are feeling
the effects of a German law
designed to protect the rights of
German tourists abroad, the Anatolia
news agency reported.
The law allows for German vacationers
to receive a partial refund of
the money they s~nt on their vacations
if their holtday does not live
up to be what brochures given out
by tourist agencies described. The
German agencies, if forced to compensate
disappointed tourists, often
do not pay Turkish hotels the full
amount owed to them.
The compensation, accordi.n~ to
the German law, may be as hlgn as
50 percent of the price of the vacation.
In order to warn Turkish hotels
and tourist-related businesses of the
potential problem, parts of the law
were translated from German by a
Turkish tourism official, Suna Gebizli.
According to the law, Gebizli said,
a 10 percent refund is given to
tourists who find, despite information
listed in the brochure given to
them, that their hotel room did not
have a balcony or view of the sea.

case of cockroaches
Tourism officials said that in one
case a tourist was given a DM 100
refund when he documented that
there was a cockroach in his hotel
room. Tourists have the right to request
a refund of between DM 200
and DM 300 for spoiled food. For
example, if the tourist paid DM
1,000 for his vacation, then for "bad
service" he might request 25 percent
of the vacation payment which
is DM 250.
