Showing sc<strong>en</strong>es from everyday life in the Latvian countryside,<br />
the play contrasts life on two very differ<strong>en</strong>t farms. The first<br />
farm repres<strong>en</strong>ts the g<strong>en</strong>eral situation in the countryside: poverty,<br />
hopelessness and drinking. On the second farm, people try to<br />
overcome circumstance, and live life according to high moral<br />
principles. As in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the childr<strong>en</strong> from<br />
both families are in love. However their differ<strong>en</strong>t interests and<br />
differ<strong>en</strong>t attitudes to life mean that they cannot be together.<br />
Scènes de la vie quotidi<strong>en</strong>ne de la campagne lettone, dans deux<br />
fermes. La ligne principale de la pièce est basée sur deux fermes.<br />
L’une d’elle représ<strong>en</strong>te la situation générale de la campagne<br />
– pauvreté, désespoir, alcoolisme. Dans l’autre, les habitants<br />
essai<strong>en</strong>t de vivre selon leurs principes hautem<strong>en</strong>t moraux <strong>en</strong> dépit<br />
des circonstances. Comme chez Shakespeare, les <strong>en</strong>fants s’aim<strong>en</strong>t.<br />
Mais ils ne peuv<strong>en</strong>t rester <strong>en</strong>semble <strong>en</strong> raison de leurs diverg<strong>en</strong>ces<br />
face à la vie.
