The play presents four emblematic figures from the world of opera: a diva, a young singer, a director and a conductor in a series of rehearsals from Verdi’s La Traviata. Each spectator is considered as a partner, sitting at a music stand in the orchestra pit, plunged into the very heart of the questions that arise in the process of musical rehearsals, into the heart of the war between the pit and the stage. Jean-François Sivadier sought to return to his play, which was a huge hit, by creating a first part in which the aim is to establish a parallel between the position of the chorus member and that of the spectator. All of this more or less leads to the violent question which should occur in the mind of the spectator: how can a ‘cultural apparatus’ as powerful and as rich as the opera be so apolitical, and cut off from the real world?

Florian, prince of fallen Arcadia, Cythère, mythical courtesan, and Axel, the gravedigger with the wooden leg, are all bearers of the Smile, all of whom the boy in the wardrobe, a master of transformation, will play in turn through the three plays which make up The Victorious. Around this imaginary and contemporary Mediterranean, Ferrare, a notorious gangster, seeks at all cost to wipe from these characters’ faces the mystery of their joy. > france + info > www.etc-cte.org 61
