Insensitivity is, on the exterior, a credible drama about middle-class
human relationships involving the father – a lawyer who is trying
to shake himself free of insensitivity, the son – a doctor, the mother
– an amateur artist, the son’s fiancée – a photographer who likes
to look but not be looked at, and the grandmother, whose degree of
dementia seems to vary with the subject of the conversation. Under
the surface there is a riddle. Not the riddle of an intrigue or of a
detective plot, but something that runs deeper, giving rise to the
questions: “If we lack feelings, how we can make ourselves feel?”;
“Can we see someone through another person’s eyes?”; “Am I
against you looking at me because I am afraid you might not see?”;
“Why don’t you search for where I am vulnerable?”; “Generally
one can safely assume that people have no souls, but then again,
what if they do...?” Insensitivity is equally good material for a
philosophical conversation as it is for comedy or drama.
Vu de l’extérieur, Insensibilité semble être un drame vraisemblable
sur les relations humaines dans les classes moyennes, dans lequel
sont impliqués un père juriste qui tente de se libérer de son
insensibilité, un fils docteur, une mère artiste amateur, la fiancée
du fils, photographe, qui veut regarder, mais ne veut pas qu’on la
regarde et une grand-mère dont le degré de démence semble varier
selon le sujet de conversation. La surface cache un mystère, mais
ce n’est pas un mystère dans l’intrigue ni du genre qui caractérise
un polar. Le mystère se trouve en profondeur et se traduit par des
questions telles que: de quoi s’agit-il en fait? Si l’on ne sent rien,
comment pourrait-on arriver à sentir? Peut-on voir une personne
avec les yeux d’une autre? Si je ne veux pas que tu me regardes,
est-ce parce que je crains que tu ne me voies pas? On peut en
général supposer que l’homme n’a pas d’âme, mais s’il en avait
une...?
