Until that moment, Pekka’s life had been nothing out of the ordinary. Smuggling icons over the border had been providing a welcome boost to his conductor’s wage, but everything changes when the question of faith drives him into an international crisis. Pekka’s entire family is affected by his chaotic transformation. When Pekka gives the icons away to passengers on the train, his brother Seppo loses his share of the proceeds, which he was saving to start a new life. Pekka’s wife Elina, who dreams of adopting a child, loses her patience when Pekka wants to introduce a new member to the family right in the middle of the adoption process. Pekka’s mother Helmi and his stepsister Katja (a child from his father’s secret affair) are also affected, and the local minister Martti has a hard time answering Pekka’s questions about the strength of his faith. The main theme of the play is faith in all its forms. The humour is also targeted at relations between Russians and Finns, which are burdened by mutual prejudices and myths. Under the surface there is a riddle. Not the riddle of an intrigue or of a detective plot, but something that runs deeper, giving rise to the questions: “If we lack feelings, how we can make ourselves feel?”; “Can we see someone through another person’s eyes?”; “Am I against you looking at me because I am afraid you might not see?”; “Why don’t you search for where I am vulnerable?”; “Generally one can safely assume that people have no souls, but then again, what if they do...?” Insensitivity is equally good material for a philosophical conversation as it is for comedy or drama.
