At the age of 83, Pavlina, once a celebrated actress, is called upon
to give the performance of her life before a young civil servant
of the Pensions Department of the Ministry of Social Insurance,
knowing that her very survival depends on his verdict. Pavlina must
prove to the young man that she is still alive, so that he may issue
a certificate to that effect, allowing her to continue receiving her
pension. “Here I am,” she says. “Everybody can see what’s left of
my body and still someone has to play God and certify that I am
still in this world.” She decides to invite him on a journey through
her life, confiding in him all the sinful crimes she committed in order
to earn fame. Indifferent at the beginning, the young man gradually
changes his attitude towards her, as Pavlina acts her rendering of a
life full of glorious performances and scandalous affairs. At the end,
Pavlina rises from the dead and the young clerk discovers that he
cannot resist surrendering to her spell. So, he forges the certificate
Pavlina has been begging for, and when the aged actress invites him
out for a beer, he accepts the invitation. “What can I say? As the
formely distinguished actress Alexandra would say, my body and my
soul are in your hands, dear sir. Treat both with tenderness but not
with exaggerated respect,” Pavlina tells him.
A l’âge de 83 ans, Pauline, une actrice glorieuse des années passées
est appelée à refaire le film de sa vie devant un jeune fonctionnaire
du département des Retraités, au Ministère de la Sécurité Sociale,
sachant que sa survie même dépend de sa décision. Pauline doit
démontrer au jeune homme qu’elle est encore vive, afin qu’il lui
délivre un certificat qui lui permettra de continuer à recevoir sa
retraite. « Je suis là », dit-elle, « tous peuvent voir ce qu’il est resté
de mon corps, et tout de même quelqu’un doit jouer Dieu et certifier
que je suis encore dans ce monde ». Ainsi, elle décide d’inviter le
jeune homme au voyage de sa vie et de lui confier tous les « crimes
pécheurs » qu’elle a commis pour gagner sa réputation. Indifférent
au début, le jeune homme change progressivement d’attitude à son
égard, tandis que Pauline crée pour lui l’image d’une vie pleine
de représentations glorieuses et de scandales érotiques. À la fin,
Pauline s’est remise à flot et le jeune fonctionnaire découvre qu’il
ne peut pas résister et il s’abandonne à son charme. Ainsi, il falsifie
le certificat que Pauline demandait et, quand l’actrice âgée l’invite
pour une bière, il accepte l’invitation. « Qu’est-ce que je peux dire ?
Comme dirait Alexandra, l’ancienne actrice célèbre, mon corps
et mon âme sont dans vos mains, Monsieur. Traitez les deux avec
tendresse mais pas avec un respect démesuré », lui dit Pauline.
