‘Leyla’ means night, and nighttime is Leyla’s time. It is at night that
she goes out with her friend, whom she secretly calls ‘The Great
One,’ and sprays gaudily colourful graffiti. Disappointed by her own
pseudo-liberal parents, she finds herself on a search for her own
path through life. Then one day Moe appears. Moe, with the strange
and beautiful name. Moe, who seems so different to everyone else.
A fragile love starts to grow between Lelya and Moe – if only
there wasn’t that other, repeatedly catapulting himself into her life,
staking his claim on her love with violent action. Darja Stocker’s
extraordinary dramatic debut is a piece of many storylines and
contradicting emotions. It tells of the confusion experienced by
adolescents on their way to independence. It also describes the
inner conflicts of an elder generation lead astray by its own best
intentions. In small, quick strokes, the shapes and contours of the
characters are bathed in glaring light before being abruptly thrust
back into the darkness.
« Leyla » signifie « nuit » et la nuit est l’heure de Leyla. C’est alors
qu’elle sort avec un ami qu’elle appelle de manière mystérieuse « le
grand » pour bomber les murs de graffitis criards et bigarrés. Déçue
du simulacre de libéralisme de ses parents, elle cherche son propre
chemin. Un jour apparaît Moe. Moe avec son beau nom bizarre,
Moe, qui semble être si différent de tous les autres. Entre Moe et
Leyla commence une histoire d’amour tendre – si seulement il n’y
avait pas l’autre qui s’incruste régulièrement dans la vie de Leyla
pour revendiquer son amour avec violence. Cette pièce est pleine
d’histoires diverses et de sentiments contradictoires. Elle parle du
désarroi des adolescents sur leur chemin vers une vie autonome.
Elle parle également des conflits d’une génération de parents
qui, au fond, voulait tout mieux faire. Dans des scènes courtes et
rapides, les silhouettes des protagonistes et des relations jaillissent
un bref moment pour être plongées dans une lumière aveuglante et
retomber abruptement dans le noir.
