In spite of all appearances, Uuuuh! by Gerard Vazquez is not a
‘clown’ story. The main character in the play is Charlie Rivel, the
great, internationally-renown Catalan clown. Around this character,
the author explores the relationship between art and politics in
the circus ring of human life, with all its contradictions, struggles,
frustrations and unfairness but also its tenderness and poetry. The
originality of the text relies on the perfect weaving together of
comic situations with one of the most brutal and shocking tragedies
in the history of mankind: the Nazi holocaust.
Malgré les apparences, Uuuuh! n’est pas l’histoire d’un clown.
Charlie Rivel, le clown catalan le plus connu internationalement,
est l’acteur principal de cette histoire que l’auteur utilise pour
penser à des relations entre l’art et la politique dans le cirque
de la vie humaine, avec toutes ses contradictions, ses luttes, ses
frustrations et ses injustices mais aussi en mêlant tendresse et
poésie. L’originalité de ce texte se trouve dans l’union des situations
comiques avec les situations les plus brutales et les tragédies les
plus étonnantes de l’histoire de l’humanité: l’holocauste nazi.
