Franzobel 1967
wir wollen den messias jetzt
oder die beschleunigte familie
we want the messiah now or the accelerated family
Jesus today, Jesus in Vienna: he is flabby and listless and is living in
a middle-class family from hell when the revelation hits him: he is
the Messiah! The Saviour! So how does an unprepared, egotistical
and decadent person react to an opportunity to redeem humanity?
And what about those near to him? In his play, Franzobel shows us
a rather more passive than proactive world, one which insists on
its fair share of happiness but believes that responsibility should
be shouldered by the next man. This civilisation sprawls, neither
believing to hope nor hoping to believe. Franzobel’s Messiah
experiences the conflicts of our time first hand. A prisoner of its
own cynicism and apathy, the civilization portrayed here wishes
nothing more than to be able to believe again, innocently and purely.
But is it actually possible to surrender oneself completely to one’s
faith without succumbing to irony and compromise? If so, then the
way forward might be free... but for what?
