In her play Bambiland, Elfriede Jelinek had already put her
thoughts about the war in Iraq to paper. With Babel, she questions
both its origins and its aftermath, in the course of three monologues
about the nature of violence, sexuality and religion. It is a journey
into the abyss of human nature and its collective subconscious,
continuously and repeatedly surfacing to detonate. Babel blends
the past and the present, always switching from one perspective
to another, interweaving the language of the media with that of
psychoanalytical and philosophical texts, mirroring everyday
political events in antique fables or bible stories. It is a multilayered
examination of war and the ways in which we think and
speak about it.
Dans sa pièce Bambiland, Elfriede Jelinek a déjà réagi à la guerre
de l’Irak. Babel pose des questions au sujet de ses préalables
et de ses séquelles et tourne, en trois monologues, autour de
l’interpénétration de la violence, la sexualité et la religion : un
voyage dans les abîmes de l’humanité, de sa conscience collective
qui, des profondeurs, se pousse inlassablement à la surface pour s’y
décharger. Babel laisse intercaler le passé et le présent, changeant
sans transition les positions et les perspectives, amalgame le
langage des médias avec celui des écrits psychanalytiques et de
la philosophie de l’histoire, reflète des événements de la politique
du jour dans des mythes antiques ou des contes religieux – une
anamnèse complexe de la guerre, de notre pensée et de notre
discours sur celle-ci.
