The will, the desire, the pleasure of knowledge :
the notion of libido sciendi in the texts of French Enlightenment
Lee, Young-Mock
The libido sciendi had been considered in the traditional christian
society as suspect and even reprehensible, for it derives from the
original sin of human beings. In the literature and the philosophy
of French Enlightenment, we can note however a process of
rehabilitation of the notion.
This article aims to examine the role the notion assumes in the
texts of main french philosophers of the eighteenth century, to
observe its variations in their texts and to understand the notion in
a larger context of the philosophy of Enlightenment.
At the end of this examination, we will see that one of the most
important changes enabled by the literature and the philosophy of
French Enlightenment lies in the very change of attitude before the
knowledge. No more an object of interdiction or of taboo, the
desire of knowledge is fully recognized as a fundamental right and
a fundamental source of pleasure of human beings.
