Nicholas Jackson O’Shaughnessy examine lui aussi le rôle de la propagande en tant qu’instrument pour contrôler l’opinion publique. Il souligne que pendant la crise qui a suivi les attentats du 11 septembre 2001, Osama bin Laden s’est servi brillamment des moyens vidéo en ciblant « les jeunes du monde entier ». C’était un choix délibéré pour « faire primer l’image sur le langage ». Bin Laden a utilisé dans sa propagande des tactiques de peur dans l’espoir de subjuguer une partie du public américain.
