the maturity examination (ér<strong>et</strong>tségi vizsga, normally, at the age of 18), the<br />

prerequisite of higher education studies.<br />

Vocational schools in their typical form off er 2 years of (primarily) general<br />

and (at least) 2 years of vocational education and training to students aged<br />

14-18 who can attain only ISCED level 3C qualifi cations (or 2C in a special form<br />

called speciális szakiskola, special vocational schools).<br />

Vocational training schools in Hungary may provide all three types of<br />

practical training within the same institution: school-based, alternance (based<br />

on a cooperation agreement, együttműködési megállapodás, b<strong>et</strong>ween the<br />

school and the enterprise) and apprenticeship (based on a student contract,<br />

tanulószerződés, concluded b<strong>et</strong>ween the student and the enterprise) training.<br />

The operation of vocational training schools, including regulations concerning<br />

teaching/training in these institutions, is regulated by the Act LXXIX of 1993 on<br />

Public education, while the provision of practical training is subject to the Act on<br />

Vocational education and training and the related decrees.<br />

Continuing vocational education and training<br />

CVET in Hungary may also be provided either within or outside the school<br />

system. The former type includes adult education (felnőttoktatás) off ering parttime<br />

(evening, esti, correspondence, levelező, and distance learning, távoktatás)<br />

courses provided by public and higher education institutions, and the<br />

various postgraduate programmes of colleges and universities (postgraduate<br />

specialization programmes, szakirányú továbbképzés, providing participants<br />

a new tertiary level qualifi cation although not a higher level degree, and the<br />

doctoral degree programmes).<br />

CVET provided outside the school system is regulated by the Act CI of 2001 on<br />

Adult Training and may be provided by:<br />

public and higher educational institutions and other budg<strong>et</strong>ary or state<br />

supported institutions (regional training centres, regionális képző központ,<br />

pedagogical background institutions such as the National Institute of<br />

Vocational Education, Nemz<strong>et</strong>i Szakképzési Intéz<strong>et</strong>, NSZI <strong>et</strong>c.),<br />

• training companies and other enterprises involved in adult training,<br />

• non-profi t organizations, professional associations <strong>et</strong>c.<br />

• enterprises off ering in-company (internal) training (belső képzés) for their<br />

employees.<br />

Adult training providers may provide general, language and vocational<br />

training programmes. The latter type includes trainings aimed at the<br />

acquisition of a vocational qualification listed in the OKJ, and also other<br />

vocational programmes which do not necessarily award state-recognized<br />

qualifications. The state-recognized OKJ vocational qualification can be<br />

obtained upon passing the state vocational examination (szakmai vizsga)<br />
