Howell Harris, one of the principal founders of Calvinistic Methodism in
Wales, was, according to his own account, born at Trevecca, near Talgarth,
Breconshire, on the 23rd of January, 1714 (Old Style), and died at the same
place on the 2i'*'ofJuly, 1775. Thèse dates are in some degree at variance
with those usually given : cp. Williams, EmlnaU Welshmen, s. v.

Dr. William Thomas, who was born in 1613, was consecrated bishop of
St. David's in 1677, and died bishop of Worcester June 25, 1689. He was
the last Welshman appointed to the see of St. David's to this very day; and the
vile System of forcing Englishmen and Scotchmen upon the Welsh church soon
spread into the other diocèses of the Principality.
