Howell Harris, one <strong>of</strong> the principal founders <strong>of</strong> Calvinistic Methodism in<br />

Wales, was, according to his own account, born at Trevecca, near Talgarth,<br />

Breconshire, on the 23rd <strong>of</strong> January, 1714 (Old Style), and died at the same<br />

place on the 2i'*'<strong>of</strong>July, 1775. Thèse dates are in some degree at variance<br />

with those usually given : cp. Williams, EmlnaU Welshmen, s. v.<br />

Dr. William Thomas, who was born in 1613, was consecrated bishop <strong>of</strong><br />

St. David's in 1677, and died bishop <strong>of</strong> Worcester June 25, 1689. He was<br />

the last Welshman appointed to the see <strong>of</strong> St. David's to this very day; and the<br />

vile System <strong>of</strong> forcing Englishmen and Scotchmen upon the Welsh church soon<br />

spread into the other diocèses <strong>of</strong> the Principality.
