ARCH^OLOGIA CAMBRENSIS.
The Archaologia Cambrensis or iht Journal of the Cambrian Archaological Asso
ciation is a quarterly published by Mr. Parker (377, Strand, Londonj and nov
edited by the Rev. Daniel Silvan Evans, a man who has long been before thi!
public as a Welsh scholar of the highest standing :
this we regard as a guarani
tee that in future we may look to the Association's publication for rationa:
philology and sound criticism as far as Welsh questions are concerned : we
•
ar
very glad to find that Mr. Evans has been able to secure the services of suc
men as Stokes and professer Evander Evans. The philological articles centaine,
in the Arch. Cam. wiil in future be noticed in this review as they appear
suffice it at présent to begin with the number for January 1872 : the article
« the Lomarec Inscriptions » p. 10-2; based on a notice of the same by L
Villemarqué in the memoirs of the « Académie des Inscriptions » is interestint
The legend hère discussed is to the following effect : « Ir ha ema J. C. in ri,
which, it is argued fairly in spite of occasional slips in philology, means, « Illit
eu jus est Jésus Christus in Regem. » The April number opens with a long an
instructive article on « some South Wales Cromlechs. » p. 81-143.
The July number (1872) contains a capital article by Stephens on the bardi
alphabet called 'Coelbren y beirdd', p. 181-210. The following are the conclusior
which Mr. S. cornes to : I. « That Coelbren y beirdd has no prétentions to ;
high antiquity, and is neither found on sculptured stones nor in cid mss. I
That it was invented in the beginning of the 1 ^th century, when paper an.
parchment were forbidden to the Cymry, and that the inventor was in ail pre
bability the bard Gwilym Tew. III. That it was not an original alphabet, except 1
respect of derivatives, but an imitation of the Roman letters. IV. That it w;
in common use in the 1 ^th century, as in shewn by the poems of the bard:
and that by the end of the i6th it had ail but ceased to be known. » J. (
Meyer's treatment of « the Welsh poems in the Codex Jiivencus, » p. 21 2-222, m
leave to others to characterize, as we entirely disagree with him. Brash rea(
the Bridell ogham as (ollows : Neqasagrom Maqi Mucoi Neel, and of cour:
makes it out to be Gaedhelic. (p. 249-257).
The October number contains the first of a séries of d Studies in Cymr
Philology by prof. Evander Evans, p. 297-314: » this is a most interestir
article on which we will venture a few observations — ; Prof. E. is unfortuna
