aquariology studies in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> western <str<strong>on</strong>g>Mediterranean</str<strong>on</strong>g> were affecting <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ecosystem<br />

adversely. Moreover, it was also c<strong>on</strong>cluded that various studies <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se species should<br />

be carried out and co-operati<strong>on</strong> am<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> state countries should be supported. In<br />

additi<strong>on</strong>, it was also recommended that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> invasi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se species to be c<strong>on</strong>trolled<br />

and restrained by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Mediterranean</str<strong>on</strong>g> coastal states. This is in accord with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> internati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

c<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong> signed, by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se studies in particular Biodiversity and Barcel<strong>on</strong>a c<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

As a c<strong>on</strong>sequence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> above menti<strong>on</strong>ed reas<strong>on</strong>s and developments, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ministry <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Envir<strong>on</strong>ment started a project “Investigati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> Caulerpa Species in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Mediterranean</str<strong>on</strong>g>”<br />

to determine <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> status and carry out necessary studies.<br />

With this project it was targeted to m<strong>on</strong>itor <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> invasi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Caulerpa species existing<br />

in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Mediterranean</str<strong>on</strong>g> coasts (e.g. Caulerpa taxifolia). The occurance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> which has not<br />

been verified yet in our coasts and to develop preventi<strong>on</strong>s to stop possible invasi<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

Moreover, it was targeted to study <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> tax<strong>on</strong>omy and ecology <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Caulerpa species<br />

(e.g. Caulerpa racemosa), <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> which <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> presence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m were proved and invasive<br />

al<strong>on</strong>g Turkish coasts, to determine <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> effects <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se invasive species <strong>on</strong> marine<br />

biodiversity, to m<strong>on</strong>itor <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> invasi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m, and to develop precauti<strong>on</strong>s to halt fur<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r<br />

invasi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m.<br />

In additi<strong>on</strong> by taking into c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> present infrastructure and activities, an<br />

“Acti<strong>on</strong> Plan” comprising <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> priority activities, has been developed to prepare<br />

appropriate acti<strong>on</strong>s and implementati<strong>on</strong>s in accordance with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> internati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

c<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> protecti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> biodiversity and exotic-invasive plants.<br />

MATERIALS AND METHODS<br />

The aim <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> present study is to observe Caulerpa species around <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Turkish coastal<br />

z<strong>on</strong>e. Therefore, seas<strong>on</strong>al sampling has been d<strong>on</strong>e by using diving equipments and<br />

cameras. In additi<strong>on</strong>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> horiz<strong>on</strong>tal and vertical distributi<strong>on</strong> area <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Caulerpa racemosa<br />

has been determined in Bodrum where <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> dense populati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Caulerpa racemosa has<br />

been reported. By using a remotely operating vehicle (ROV), <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> deepest depth where<br />

Caulerpa racemosa distribute has been determined.<br />

The project was started <strong>on</strong> September 2000. To fullfill <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> objectives <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> project,<br />

coastline, where <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> possible Caulerpa distributi<strong>on</strong> were already reported in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> literature<br />

(Aleem, 1992; Panayotidis & M<strong>on</strong>tesantou 1994; Cirik & Ozturk 1991), – totalling 5,000<br />

km – between Enez town at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Turkish-Greek border and Samada town at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Turkish-<br />

Syrian Border was surveyed by means <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> SCUBA equipment, samples were collected,<br />

and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se samples were identified under laboratory c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s. As a result <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first<br />

surveys, Caulerpa taxifolia was not encountered al<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Turkish coasts. However, after<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> opening <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Suez Canal invasive Red Sea species Caulerpa racemosa was found<br />

present from south west Aegean to north Aegean, in particular, in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Gökova Bay and<br />

Bodrum Peninsula and its vicinity and c<strong>on</strong>firmed by underwater footage.
