ABSTRACT<br />

The following new records from Apulia are reported: Halarachni<strong>on</strong> ligulatum<br />

(Gigartinales, Rhodophyta), Gelidiella sp. (Gelidiales, Rhodophyta) and Batophora sp.<br />

(Dasycladales, Chlorophyta). The first record extends <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> distributi<strong>on</strong> area <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> H. ligulatum<br />

to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> south <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Adriatic Sea, where it was <strong>on</strong>ly known from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Gulf <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Trieste. The<br />

attributi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Gelidiella sp. to an undescribed tax<strong>on</strong> is supported by a l<strong>on</strong>g-term study.<br />

The occurrence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> tropical genus Batophora, previously recorded <strong>on</strong>ly from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Caribbean area and from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Canary Islands, is reported for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first time in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Mediterranean</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

INTRODUCTION<br />

During collecti<strong>on</strong> campaigns in some uninvestigated Apulian coastal areas (Adriatic and<br />

I<strong>on</strong>ian), aimed at enriching <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> seaweed collecti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Department <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Biology and<br />

Plant Pathology (University <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Bari, Italy), <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> following new records were found:<br />

Halarachni<strong>on</strong> ligulatum (Woodward) Kützing and two taxa bel<strong>on</strong>ging to Gelidiella<br />

Feldmann et Hamel and Batophora J. Agardh.<br />

The finding <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> H. ligulatum, not reported in Apulia in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> recent catalogue <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

macrophytobenthos <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Italian coasts (Furnari et al., 2003) represents <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first record for<br />

this regi<strong>on</strong> and for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sou<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rn Adriatic Sea.<br />

Al<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same coast in 1999 Lapenna and Perr<strong>on</strong>e reported an undescribed species<br />

presumably bel<strong>on</strong>ging to Gelidiella. All <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Mediterranean</str<strong>on</strong>g> representatives <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> genus<br />

Gelidiella have been reported from Apulia, that is G. antipae Celan, G. lubrica (Kützing)<br />

Feldmann et Hamel, G. nigrescens (Feldmann) Feldmann et Hamel, G. ramellosa (Kützing)<br />

Feldmann et Hamel and G. tenuissima Feldmann et Hamel (Furnari et al., 2003).<br />

The genus Batophora is currently represented by two species, B. oerstedii J. Agardh and<br />

B. occidentalis (Harv.) S. Berger et Kaever ex M. J. Wynne. They live toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Caribbean regi<strong>on</strong> and <strong>on</strong>ly recently <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y have also been reported in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> central eastern<br />

Atlantic Ocean (Canary Islands) (Haroun et al., 2002). Therefore our record is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first<br />

for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Mediterranean</str<strong>on</strong>g> basin.<br />
