studies dealing with Italian coast that has had and has still as main actors <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> present<br />

generati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Italian phycologists.<br />

In fact, from 1925 to 1964, <strong>on</strong>ly few papers were published: by Schiffner & Vatova<br />

(1937) <strong>on</strong> algae from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lago<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Venice; by Levring (1942) <strong>on</strong> some algae from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Adriatic Sea, Sicily and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Gulf <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Naples; by Funk (1927 and 1955) <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> marine<br />

vegetati<strong>on</strong> and <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> benthic algal flora <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Gulf <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Naples, respectively; by Molinier<br />

& Picard (1953) <strong>on</strong> some vegetati<strong>on</strong>al observati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sicilian coast; by Cavaliere<br />

(1957, 1959, 1960) <strong>on</strong> some algae from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Straits <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Messina. C<strong>on</strong>versely, from 1962<br />

to date very numerous algological papers were produced. Except for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> paper by Pignatti<br />

(1962) <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lago<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Venice, such papers first dealt <strong>on</strong>ly with both nor<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rn and<br />

sou<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rn coast <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sicily: <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Gulf <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Palermo (Giacc<strong>on</strong>e & De Leo 1966), <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Island <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Femmine (Palermo) (Giacc<strong>on</strong>e & Sortino 1964), cape Zafferano (Palermo) (Giacc<strong>on</strong>e<br />

1965), Palma di M<strong>on</strong>techiaro (Agrigento) (Sortino 1967), <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> harbour <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Licata<br />

(Agrigento) (Sortino 1968). Then, from 1970 to date, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y dealt with eastern coast <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Sicily (Furnari & Scammacca 1970a,b; 1971, 1973; Cormaci et al. 1976, 1978; Cormaci<br />

& Furnari 1979a,b; Battiato & P<strong>on</strong>te 1975,1978; Battiato et al. 1978), <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Straits <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Messina (Codomier & Giacc<strong>on</strong>e 1972; Giacc<strong>on</strong>e & Rizzi L<strong>on</strong>go 1976), <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Straits <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sicily<br />

(Giacc<strong>on</strong>e et al. 1972), <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Island <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ustica and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Aeolian Islands (Giacc<strong>on</strong>e 1971;<br />

Giacc<strong>on</strong>e et al., 1985), <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Island <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pantelleria (Giacc<strong>on</strong>e et al. 1973), <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Egadi Islands<br />

(Giacc<strong>on</strong>e & Sortino 1974), <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Island <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Linosa (Cinelli et al. 1976), <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tuscanian coast<br />

(Tyrrhenian Sea) (Cinelli 1969, 1971a; Papi & et al. 1992; Pignatti & Rizzi 1972), <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

sou<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rn Tyrrhenian Sea (<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Aeolian Islands and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Island <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ustica included)<br />

(Boudouresque & Cinelli 1971; Cinelli 1971b; Gargiulo et al. 1985; Al<strong>on</strong>gi<br />

& et al. 1993; Cormaci et al. 1992), <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sardinia (Cossu et al. 1992; Solazzi 1969), <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Liguran Sea (Benedetti-Cecchi & Cinelli 1992), <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Adriatic Sea (<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tremiti Island<br />

included) (Giacc<strong>on</strong>e 1978; Furnari et al. 1999; Solazzi 1965, 1967; 1976), <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> high<br />

I<strong>on</strong>ian Sea (Cecere et al. 1991, 1996) and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Island <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lampedusa (Scammacca et al.<br />

1993).<br />

However, in spite <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> publicati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> above menti<strong>on</strong>ed papers, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> floristic<br />

knowledge <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> benthic marine macroalgae <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Italian coast is still irregular and not<br />

complete. In fact, while some areas resulted well studied (e.g. <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Gulf <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Naples, Sicily<br />

and adjacent islands, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> high Adriatic Sea, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tremiti Islands, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Gulf <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Taranto), some<br />

o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs are still insufficiently studied (e.g. <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ligurian Sea, Sardinia, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> coast <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Latium,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> coast <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Calabria, etc.).<br />

With a grant <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Italian Ministry <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Envir<strong>on</strong>ment, Furnari et al. (2003) have<br />

compiled a check-list <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> benthic macroalgal Italian flora. In order to give a picture as<br />

much corresp<strong>on</strong>ding as possible to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> present compositi<strong>on</strong>, <strong>on</strong>ly references published<br />

since 1950 have been used. Over 600 papers were c<strong>on</strong>sidered, in which a total <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1120<br />

taxa at specific and infraspecific level were reported. Following a critical tax<strong>on</strong>omic and<br />

nomenclatural revisi<strong>on</strong>, apart from 56 Cyanophyta, 79 taxa inquirenda (<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> tax<strong>on</strong>omic<br />

value <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> which remains uncertain without a revisi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> herbarium specimens) and 31<br />

taxa excludenda (<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> records <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> which are probably due to misidentificati<strong>on</strong>s since refer<br />

to species not present in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Mediterranean</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sea) not c<strong>on</strong>sidered in this paper, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Italian<br />

flora resulted <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 509 Rhodophyta, 208 Phaeophyta and 154 Chlorophyta for a total <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>
