to be built up, this disappearance must be c<strong>on</strong>sidered irreversible from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> human point<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> view (even when <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> causes <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> death are believed to have been removed).<br />

Lithophyllum byssoides trottoirs are also threatened by c<strong>on</strong>stant treading: <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> platform <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Cala Litizia (Scandola nature Reserve, Corsica), well publicised as a high value natural<br />

m<strong>on</strong>ument, was visited by growing numbers <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> tourists who arrived <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re in rubber<br />

dinghies. Lithophyllum byssoides dies if it is walked over too <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ten. In additi<strong>on</strong>, at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> side<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> platform, rope marks could be observed (dinghy moorings) (Verlaque, 1996). For<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se reas<strong>on</strong>s, at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> request <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Scientific Committee <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Scandola Nature<br />

Reserve, access to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Cala Litizia L. byssoides trottoir is now prohibited.<br />

Finally, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> expected relative rising <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mean sea-level, rapid in terms <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> geological<br />

scale, resulting from global warming (Pernetta and Elder, 1992), threatens in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> l<strong>on</strong>g<br />

term <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> L. byssoides rims and trottoirs. The building up <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this bio-c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> is linked<br />

to a stable or very slowly rising sea-level (see above).<br />

CONCLUSIONS<br />

Researchers' attenti<strong>on</strong> with regard to anthropogenic impact <strong>on</strong> marine vegetati<strong>on</strong> has<br />

been mainly focused <strong>on</strong> polluti<strong>on</strong> although, in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> l<strong>on</strong>g term, this is far from being <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

greatest cause for c<strong>on</strong>cern. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Mediterranean</str<strong>on</strong>g> marine vegetati<strong>on</strong> is mainly threatened<br />

by coastal development, species introducti<strong>on</strong> and global warming, which are irreversible<br />

events, at least at human scale. In additi<strong>on</strong>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> regressi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> l<strong>on</strong>g-lived species, such as<br />

Cystoseira ssp, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lithophyllum byssoides trottoirs, whose c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> takes several<br />

centuries, jeopardizes present day nature c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> policy.<br />

Unfortunately, scientific knowledge <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>sequences <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se threats is ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r sparse<br />

and, above all, policy makers and stakeholders still ingenuously c<strong>on</strong>sider that reducing<br />

polluti<strong>on</strong> will solve all envir<strong>on</strong>mental problems.<br />
