PROCEEDINGS OF THE SECOND MEDITERRANEAN SYMPOSIUM ON MARINE VEGETATION (ATHENS, 12-13 DECEMBER 2003)<br />

42<br />

Therefore, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Mediterranean</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sea may be c<strong>on</strong>sidered as a hot spot <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> marine<br />

macrophyte species diversity. One <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> reas<strong>on</strong>s for its richness is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> coexistence, in<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Mediterranean</str<strong>on</strong>g>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> species from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> warm and boreal Atlantic, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> tropical Atlantic and<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Indo-Pacific Ocean. Ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r reas<strong>on</strong> is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> high rate <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> endemism.<br />

RANKING HUMAN IMPACT<br />

Human impact can be ranked according to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> time necessary for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> impact to become<br />

reversible after <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> disturbance occurred (e.g. an oil spill) or after <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> suspensi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

stress (e.g. <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> setting up <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a wastewater treatment plant) (Table I).<br />

Domestic polluti<strong>on</strong> effects <strong>on</strong> s<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>t bottom assemblages become barely discernible after<br />

less than a decade (Bellan et al., 1999). In a stati<strong>on</strong> impacted by hydrocarb<strong>on</strong>s from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Amoco Cadiz wreck (English Channel, France), recol<strong>on</strong>izati<strong>on</strong> by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> benthic Amphipoda<br />

Ampelisca was achieved after 12 years; recol<strong>on</strong>i-zati<strong>on</strong> was retarded due to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

combinati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> demographic strategy <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ampelisca (e.g. absence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> pelagic larvae<br />

and low fecundity) and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> distance from n<strong>on</strong>-impacted populati<strong>on</strong> which could supply<br />

recruits (Poggiale and Dauvin, 2001). As far as o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r taxa are c<strong>on</strong>cerned, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> impact <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

oil spills is <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ten weak and <strong>on</strong>ly lasts a few years (Marchand, 1981; Raffin et al., 1991;<br />

but see Peters<strong>on</strong> et al., 2003). In some cases, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> impact <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> cleaning processes (e.g.<br />

scrubbing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> rocks with brushes and high pres-sure water jets; fortunately, surfactant is<br />

no l<strong>on</strong>ger used) is greater than that <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> oil spill itself (e.g. Clark, 1986; Cognetti and<br />

Cognetti, 1992).<br />

Table 1. Ranking <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> relative importance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> human impact, according to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> time necessary<br />

for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> impact to become reversible.<br />

Rank Time necessary for reversibility Some examples<br />

1 1 day through 1 m<strong>on</strong>th Some local polluti<strong>on</strong> events<br />

2 1 m<strong>on</strong>th through 1 year Some local polluti<strong>on</strong> events<br />

3 1 year through 10 years Overfishing (cascade effect), some polluti<strong>on</strong> events, oil spills<br />

4 10 years through 1 century L<strong>on</strong>g-lived species destructi<strong>on</strong> (e.g. Cystoseira spp.)<br />

5 1 century through 1 millennium L<strong>on</strong>g-lived species destructi<strong>on</strong> (e.g. Posid<strong>on</strong>ia oceanica), overfishing<br />

(genetic shift)<br />

6 More than 1 millennium Coastal development, species introducti<strong>on</strong>, species extincti<strong>on</strong>, global<br />

warming<br />

In c<strong>on</strong>trast, l<strong>on</strong>g lasting and irreversible impact (e.g. l<strong>on</strong>g-lived species destructi<strong>on</strong>, coastal<br />

development, introduced species) are greater cause for c<strong>on</strong>cern. Unfortunately, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

public, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>refore journalists and decisi<strong>on</strong> makers, give priority to spectacular events,<br />

or accidents, as opposed to what is lasting, what is chr<strong>on</strong>ic, even though <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

c<strong>on</strong>sequences <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> chr<strong>on</strong>ic impact are <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ten more serious than those <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a <strong>on</strong>e-<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>f event.
