ABSTRACT<br />

The implementati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Directive 92/ 43/ EEC indicates <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> enactment <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a European<br />

network <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> regi<strong>on</strong>s (sites) <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> special envir<strong>on</strong>mental management, known as “NATURA<br />

2000”. The Greek NATURA 2000 network c<strong>on</strong>sists <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> about 300 regi<strong>on</strong>s. Most <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m<br />

present an important marine part.<br />

The statistical analysis was based <strong>on</strong> phytobenthic data from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> habitat type “reef” <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 16<br />

sites. The aim <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> work was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> hierarchical classificati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sites <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> basis <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

phytobenthos biodiversity. The s<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>tware used was PRIMER 5 and SPSS 11.<br />

The Cluster analysis and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Multi Dimensi<strong>on</strong>al Scaling (MDS) were performed <strong>on</strong> a Bray<br />

Curtis Similarity matrix. The dissimilarity <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sites was checked, according to specific<br />

envir<strong>on</strong>mental factors (date, substrate, inclinati<strong>on</strong>, water depth, turbidity etc). Informati<strong>on</strong><br />

c<strong>on</strong>cerning <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> species/site was gained by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Rank Correlati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Simper Analysis showed <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> percentage <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> average dissimilarity/ similarity between<br />

different sites al<strong>on</strong>g with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> species, which was c<strong>on</strong>sidered resp<strong>on</strong>sible for this. Last but<br />

not least, a classificati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> regi<strong>on</strong>s was attained, according to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir biodiversity, by<br />

means <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Diversity Analysis.<br />
