ABSTRACT<br />

Vegetati<strong>on</strong> mapping objectives (scientific knowledge, nature c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong>, m<strong>on</strong>itoring),<br />

scope, methods (satellite imagery, aerial photography, Casi, side scan s<strong>on</strong>ar, towed<br />

underwater camera, dredging, grabs, observati<strong>on</strong>s from small boats, diving, snorkelling),<br />

scale (from 1/460 000 to 1/320), accuracy and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> kind <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> mapped vegetati<strong>on</strong><br />

(a species, a community, a landscape or a type <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> bottom) vary widely from <strong>on</strong>e map to<br />

ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r. Despite <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fact that hundreds <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> maps are available, it is doubtful whe<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r<br />

many <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m fulfil any <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> possible purposes <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> cartography. Major criticisms are that<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y lack accuracy and that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y are <strong>on</strong>ly qualitative (i.e. just presence or absence). In<br />

additi<strong>on</strong>, maps <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> species or communities o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r than <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> seagrass Posid<strong>on</strong>ia oceanica<br />

(e.g. Cystoseira and Laminaria forests) are scarce.<br />

KEYWORDS: cartography, marine vegetati<strong>on</strong>, sea grass.<br />

INTRODUCTION<br />

In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Mediterranean</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sea, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> oldest maps showing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> marine vegetati<strong>on</strong> seem to be<br />

those <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Mari<strong>on</strong> (1883) and Pruvot (1897). Since <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n, hundreds <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> maps have been<br />

produced, most <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m remaining unpublished (grey literature).<br />

Objectives (scientific knowledge, natural heritage c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong>, m<strong>on</strong>itoring), scope,<br />

methods, scale, accuracy and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> kind <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> mapped vegetati<strong>on</strong> (a species, a community, a<br />

landscape and even types <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> bottom) vary widely from <strong>on</strong>e map to ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r, and have<br />

changed over time.<br />

Cartography is highly time c<strong>on</strong>suming and <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ten involves costly means and large teams.<br />

Therefore, it is justifiable to tackle a sensitive questi<strong>on</strong>: are maps a powerful tool which<br />

can provide answers to important questi<strong>on</strong>s, or do <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ten prove disappointing and<br />

<strong>on</strong>ly serve <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> purpose <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> raising (and wasting) m<strong>on</strong>ey?<br />

WHY MAP VEGETATION?<br />

There are three major objectives in mapping vegetati<strong>on</strong> distributi<strong>on</strong>. Firstly, to develop<br />

scientific knowledge <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> vegetati<strong>on</strong> and <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> its distributi<strong>on</strong>: locati<strong>on</strong>, abundance,<br />

patterns al<strong>on</strong>g depth and latitudinal gradients, patterns <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> successi<strong>on</strong> over time from<br />

pi<strong>on</strong>eer stages to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> climax. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sec<strong>on</strong>d</str<strong>on</strong>g>ly, to c<strong>on</strong>serve <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> vegetati<strong>on</strong> as a natural heritage.<br />
