Study Area
The method was applied on <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>astern coasts <strong>of</strong> Rhodes Island (Aegean Sea,
Greece) (Fig. 2), in order to establish whe<strong>the</strong>r and how it responds to certain
anthropogenic impacts. The study area extends from <strong>the</strong> busy town <strong>of</strong> Rhodes (R3, town
port) to a distant recreational beach in Ladikon bay (R8). All five sampling sites are
situated along a well-known pollution gradient resulting from port, domestic and o<strong>the</strong>r
coastal activities in <strong>the</strong> area.

RESULTS
Percentage coverage values for all identified species (or species groups) were calculated.
Checklist and coverage values for all taxa at each station are illustrated in Table 1.
Dictyota dichotoma and Dictyota linearis were <strong>the</strong> dominant species at station R3 while
Cystoseira and Jania spp. dominated throughout <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> study area.
