The existence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> passive fixati<strong>on</strong> mechanisms <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> scales<br />

in functi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> time has also been showed for Ir<strong>on</strong> (Pergent-Martini et al., 1993), but<br />

this mechanism seems circumscribed to this element. Finally, a decrease <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mercury<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tents in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> envir<strong>on</strong>ment can be possible but does not seem to be c<strong>on</strong>firmed with<br />

regard to what is observed for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> rhizomes. Indeed, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se latter show an increase <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

mercury c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s, in all sites, since 1998 (Table 1). Pergent (1987) evokes <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fact<br />

that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> growth <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> rhizome, situated at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> apex, is not achieved and that it can<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tinue during two-three years, causing c<strong>on</strong>sequently an increase <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> its biomass. Pergent-<br />

Martini (1994) shows it exists a negative correlati<strong>on</strong> between <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> quantity <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> mercury<br />

memorized by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> rhizomes and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> size <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se latter. The quantities <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> mercury,<br />

recorded in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> rhizomes for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> three last years, may be so overestimated. A correcti<strong>on</strong><br />

factor, based <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> «<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>oretical» relative c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> scales and rhizomes to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

belowground biomass, can be calculated taking into c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> relative c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong><br />

observed in 1997 and 1998, in each sites (Fig. 3). So <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>oretical mercury<br />

c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> obtained shows an important decrease between 2000 and 2001. Indeed,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> correcti<strong>on</strong> does not integrate <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fact that if <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> rhizome had c<strong>on</strong>tinued to grow, it<br />

would have probably c<strong>on</strong>tinued to accumulate mercury.<br />

Although it seems necessary improving <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> correcti<strong>on</strong>al factor to apply to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> more<br />

recent years, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> results obtained c<strong>on</strong>firm all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> interest <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Posid<strong>on</strong>ia<br />

oceanica to evaluate <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mercurial c<strong>on</strong>taminati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> coastal envir<strong>on</strong>ment. Indeed,<br />

because <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> its big sensitivity, it allows establishing a gradient <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> quality between sites little<br />

c<strong>on</strong>taminated and allows moreover to inform <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> past c<strong>on</strong>taminati<strong>on</strong> levels and to<br />

apprehend <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> future kinetics.<br />
