suggested <strong>the</strong> association Cystoseiretum sauvageauanae Giaccone 1994 (Ord. Cystoseiretalia, All. Cystoseirion crinitae) with C. sauvageauana, C. foeniculacea f. tenuiramosa (=C. schiffneri f. tenuiramosa) and Stilophora rhizodes as dominant species. Moreover <strong>the</strong> accompanying species that we found in <strong>the</strong> Cystoseira associations from <strong>the</strong> moderately and very sheltered sites correspond to a previous more detailed description <strong>of</strong> Cystoseiretum sauvageauanae by Giaccone and Bruni (1973). However, <strong>the</strong>se authors reported that C. sauvageauana was replaced by C. corniculata in <strong>the</strong> E <strong>Mediterranean</strong>. In addition, <strong>the</strong> Cystoseiretum sauvageauanae described from <strong>the</strong> E <strong>Mediterranean</strong> (Aegean Sea) was reported from high wave energy conditions (Huvé, 1972, Montesanto and Panayotidis, 2000). For <strong>the</strong>se reasons, <strong>the</strong> associations we found with C. foeniculacea f. tenuiramosa as <strong>the</strong> dominant species could possibly consist a new type <strong>of</strong> Cystoseiretum sauvageauanae or even a new association. This conclusion highlights <strong>the</strong> need for fur<strong>the</strong>r research on <strong>the</strong> Cystoseira associations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> E <strong>Mediterranean</strong>.
