PROCEEDINGS OF THE SECOND MEDITERRANEAN SYMPOSIUM ON MARINE VEGETATION (ATHENS, 12-13 DECEMBER 2003) 152 EXAMPLE This methodology has been applied to <strong>the</strong> coast <strong>of</strong> Catalonia. Data was collected in spring 2002. The geomorphological parameters were evaluated in year 2001, toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> geomorphological and community cartography <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> reference sites. Here, we present <strong>the</strong> EQR corresponding to different regions, although it can also be obtained for municipalities or o<strong>the</strong>r geographical or management-based units (Fig. 3). The result <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> EQR for <strong>the</strong> littoral regions in Catalonia in year 2002 shows that <strong>the</strong> ecological status <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn coast is high, while <strong>the</strong> center and <strong>the</strong> south coast have a moderate status, except for <strong>the</strong> region <strong>of</strong> “Tarragonès” with a good status. The region “Baix Llobregat” has not been evaluated since its shoreline is completely sandy. CONCLUSIONS The cartography <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> littoral communities permits to know <strong>the</strong> distribution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se communities along <strong>the</strong> coast and <strong>the</strong> monitoring <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ecological status <strong>of</strong> coastal waters within <strong>the</strong> WFD monitoring programs. The sampling <strong>of</strong> data is relatively quick and, as a visual method, it is non destructive. It is also important to point out that is continuous and every piece <strong>of</strong> rocky coast can be evaluated. Never<strong>the</strong>less, coasts devoid <strong>of</strong> any kind <strong>of</strong> macroscopic vegetation cannot be evaluated (e.g. sandy shores).
