PREFACE TO THE SLATE AND OTHER ORNAMENTAL ROCKS CATALOGUE
The Slate Technological Institute of Castilla y Leon
was founded by the Slate Central Association of Leon
University to promote slate and mineral resources sectors.
It has two main objectives: to improve the business
competitiveness and to get the necessary resources for
investigation, development and innovation.
The SLATE LABORATORY is among the services off ered by
this institute. It gives technical support to the companies
to attain the CE MARK. This mark will be obligatory from
May 2006. It was initially oriented to the slate sector, but
now it has taken a step forward with the establishment
of a “System of quality and mark image for the slate and
other ornamental rocks sectors”. Its aim is to develop the
competitiveness of these sectors and their positioning in
international markets. It has the support and subvention
of Castilla y Leon ADE (Economic Development Agency).
The “Catalogue for slate and other ornamental rocks”
plays a very important role within this project in the
spreading of these products, products of fundamental
importance in our economy. It is hoped that this
Catalogue will reach a greater market and will help the
better marketing of these products.
I would like to encourage businessmen and professionals
related to natural stone sector to get to know these
products through this Catalogue. Besides, I would like to
avail myself of this opportunity to thank the employers
for their invaluable and indispensable cooperation in
the preparation of this Catalogue.
For-
No
Clásticos que son químicos, bioquímicos y evaporíticos.
(Fig. 1, 2 y 3).
Calizas:
• Inorgánicas o bioquímicas, ambientes marinos
someros, plataformas arrecifales, bancos y lagunas
costeras.
• Bioclásticas:
o Coquina.
o Creta.
• No clásticas:
o Travertino.
o Estalactitas y estalagmita.
o Oolitas.
Dolomías:
• Inorgánicas, producto de la diagénesis de calizas
y sedimentos carbonatados y la adición de
Mg. Bahías someras.
Chert:
• Inorgánico o bioquímico, cuarzo criptocristalino,
fondos marinos profundos:
o Pedernal negro.
o Jaspe.
Evaporizas:
• Inorgánicas, ambientes marinos y cuencas desérticas:
o Sal de roca.
o Yeso, anhidrita.
a) Rocas intrusivas (o plutónicas):
cristalizadas lentamente
en profundidad. El descenso
muy gradual de la temperatura
permite que los minerales se
desarrollen, obteniéndose texturas
granudas.
b) Rocas hipabisales (o fi lonianas):
cristalizadas a profundidad
intermedia, en fi lones, diques,
sills, apófi sis, etc. Suelen “heredar”

zadas.
ROCKS
Rocks are solid formations without a defi ned geometrical
shape; they are made up of one or several
minerals and, according to their original geological
process, rocks can be classifi ed in three groups: igneous
rocks, sedimentary rocks and metamorphic
rocks.
SEDIMENTARY ROCKS
SEDIMENTARY ROCKS are rocks derived from the consolidation
of fragments of pre-existing rocks, rests of
plants and animals or precipitation from solution.
All the rocks that are on the earth’s surface interact
with the atmosphere and the hydrosphere. This interaction
results in the meteorization of these rocks
and therefore they fragment; then erosive agents,
like wind and water, carry these fragments
and deposit them in continental
or sea environments forming sediments.
After some time, these sediments
are altered, compacted and
cemented because of the pressure
made by new sediments that place
on top. This, together with some
chemical changes, originates a new
rock called sedimentary rock.
After the deposit of these sediments
a new compacting and cementing
process starts: Diagenesis. This process
takes place near the surface and at relatively low
temperatures and pressures, and in this process some
gases and water are expelled. But in this process any
change in the volume of the consolidated materials
and the migration of minerals that may alter the
chemical composition of the rock are excluded (in if
this is the case we would be talking about metamorphism).
Compaction is the reduction of volume of a mass of
non-consolidated materials due to shortening. This
consolidation is usually the result of the pores narrowing
and of the lost of interstitial water of the sediments,
due to the increase in weight of the overlying
sediments.
Cementation takes place when particles combine
themselves because of the precipitated materials
coming from movements of fl uids.
When diagenesis provokes the formation of massive
rock layers, it is called Lithifi cation.
Types of sedimentary rocks: Detrital sedimentary
rocks (also called Terrigenous or clastic), Chemical/
biochemical Sedimentary Rocks (neo-forming), and
Organic Sedimentary Rocks (Coals).
• DETRITAL SEDIMENTARY ROCKS: They are derived
from the weathering of pre-existing rocks,
which have been transported to the
depositional basin. They are classifi
ed according to the size of their
fragments. If the grain is large, they
are called conglomerates; sandstones
grain is medium-sized and
silts and clays grain is very small.
• CHEMICAL / BIOCHEMICAL SEDI-
MENTARY ROCKS: These rocks are
derived from chemical processes of
minerals, like common salt, gypsum
or dolomite. They are most commonly
known as evaporites.
• ORGANIC SEDIMENTARY ROCKS: This group consists
of rocks composed of organic matter, that is,
rests of living beings. The typical organic sedimentary
rocks are chalk, coal, coral, mud and peat. Limestone
is a special case because it is a rock that may form
by a chemical process, but the great majority is the
16
result of the action of living beings. Calcic carbonate
is within the organics of most living beings. It forms
the hard parts. Limestone is formed by the fossilization
of these living beings. Then there are two types
of sediments: Clastic (detrital). They derive from rocks,
minerals and organisms and sediments. Non clastic:
they are chemical, biochemical and evaporites. (Fig.
1, 2 and 3)
Limestone:
• Inorganic and biochemical, sea environments, coral
reefs, banks and coastal lagoons.
• Bioclastic:
o Coquina.
o Chalk.
• Non clastic:
o Travertine.
o Stalactite and stalagmite.
o Oolitic limestone.
Dolomite:
• Inorganic, a product of limestone and carbonate
sediments and Mg addition. Bays
Chert:
• Inorganic or biochemical, cryptocrystalline quartz,
deep sea bottoms:
o Black fl int.
o Jasper.
Evaporites:
• Inorganic, sea environments and desert basins (Aeolian
environment):
o Rock salt.
o Gypsum, anhydrite.
MINERAL DEPOSITS IN SEDIMENTARY ROCKS:
- Iron Deposits: silicates and deep sea carbonates.
- Phosphorus deposits: continental shelf.
- Evaporitic deposits.
- Coal, natural gas and oil deposits.
IGNEOUS ROCKS
Igneous rocks are formed by crystallization of mag-
ma. Magma is the silicate mixture partially or totally
liquid, usually as result of the fusion of pre-existent
rocks.
There are two types of igneous rocks, depending on
where the rock is formed.
The igneous rocks that form under the earth’s surface
are called intrusive igneous rocks (or plutonic
rocks). The word “plutonic” comes from Pluto, Greek
God of the underground world. Underground, they
are formed when the melted rock, called magma,
deep within the earth becomes trapped in small
pockets. As these pockets of magma cool slowly underground,
the magma becomes igneous rocks.
The igneous rocks that form on the earth’s surface
are called extrusive igneous rocks. These rocks are
also known as volcanic rocks because they are lava
that has made it to the surface and cooled down on
or above the earth’s surface and crystallize in places
like Volcanoes. In these rocks, the lava cools on the
ground very quickly because it is spew out to relatively
cold areas on the surface.
Textural classifi cation of igneous rocks:
The following classifi cation is made according to
shape, arrangement, and size of the crystals that
made a rock, and not considering the mineral species
involved. In this sense, the chart is explicit enough to
fi nd the textural category a certain rock belongs to.
The rock texture depends on the geological environment
(depth) of magma crystallization, and then
there are:
a) Intrusive rocks (or plutonic): wherein the magma
crystallizes at depth in the Earth. Temperature decreases
gradually and therefore the minerals develop
and create larger grains.
b) Hypabyssal rocks (or fi lonian): medium-deep crystallized,
in seams, dikes, silos, apophysis, etc. They
usually “inherit “some large-grained crystals from the
magma pockets, those that are immersed in a thin
grain matrix. The resulting texture is the porphyry
texture.
c) Extrusive or (Volcanic): formed when the magma
cools and crystallizes on the surface of the Earth,
under certain atmospheric pressure conditions. Low
temperatures stop the development of visible crystals,
and the pressure helps the degasifi cation process.
The degasifi cation is responsible, in the case of
basalts, of the upper vesicular or vacuolar levels.
Igneous Petrogenesis:
As we have explained before, igneous rocks result
from the crystallization of magma. Magma, for its
part, comes from the partial fusion of a pre-existent
rock.
Magma’s chemical composition (and therefore the
composition of the rock derived from it) depends on
the chemical composition of the parent rock, the degree
of partial fusion (depends on the temperature
and the presence or absence of volatiles), and the
phenomenon duration.
Partial fusion is a fractioned distillation process,
where a rock undergoes a gradual rise in the surrounding
temperature until reaching the fusion
point of one or more of its components. The result
is a “liquid” from the chemical composition of the
mineral phase/phases of less fusion point and a refractory
remain. The liquid (magma) may move to a
diff erent position from the source area (outsource)
if the bordering pressure temperatures, permeability
of the environment and fusion degree allows it to.
The way magma ascends from the source area (usually
the earth’s crust or the interface crust - stratum)
up to its site has been discussed at length; there are
even several conceptual models. However, they all
have in common the presence of deep structures
(magma pockets) of several sizes and geometries;
sub-surface structures in the form of dikes, seams or
sills; and surface or volcanic structures (magma spill-
age, heats, volcanic cones, domes, etc.).Therefore,
the same magma may sit in diff erent “geological environments”
or depths.
The result is a rock with identical chemical composition
and identical mineralogy, but diff erent textures.
The following chart explains this fact. (Fig. 4)
Igneous rocks are in-homogeneously spread on
earth’s crust. Acid and basic rocks are separated not
only in their generation environment -basaltic magmas
in meso-oceanic dorsals and granitic magmas
in subduction zones- but also in the way they are lying.
Basalts -extrusive equivalents of gabbros- are the
commonest basic rocks in our planet surface. Whereas
Granites -plutonium equivalents of rhyolites- are
the commonest acid rocks on Earth.
Strictly, the average chemical composition of the
continental crust is close to granodiorite’s. This rock
is the intrusive equivalent of andesite, which is the
main lava erupted by volcanoes in subduction areas.
18
Basaltic rocks derive from the partial fusion (anatexis)
of the upper stratum, which has an ultra-basic composition.
In the areas of formation of oceanic crust
(meso-oceanic ridges) and in oceanic islands (like
Hawaii) the rock that is undergoing anatexis processes
is the earth’s layer. On the contrary, in subduction
zones the oceanic crust immerses under the continental
crust. As a consequence, water seeps through
the layers, acts like fl uxing, and allows the partial fusion
of the base of the continental crust and of the
sediments carried on the oceanic crust.
METAMORPHIC ROCKS
Metamorphic rocks were originally igneous rocks,
sedimentary or even metamorphic, but its essence
has changed due to processes happening under the
earth’s surface.
The factors that control the metamorphic process are
temperature and/or pressure. We must bear in mind
that the heat source for this transformation comes
from the radioactive disintegration of isotopes that
takes place inside our planet. Due to the continuous
cooling process the Earth’s surface must undergo
(heat radiated by Earth) there is a gradual temperature
rise with depth, and this is called geothermic
gradient. It varies from one part of the crust to another,
but its average temperature is 1ºC every 33 m.
Then as a rock experiences deeper conditions it has
to face a hotter environment and higher pressure.
When temperatures are lower –near the surface–
processes are assigned to exogenous or sedimentary
cycles, and more exactly to the digenesis or lithifi cation.
When rocks are subjected to greater heat (high
temperatures) and pressure inside the Earth, they are
changed into rocks which are diff erent from the parent
rock. This change occurs while the parent rocks
are still in solid state. The new rocks that are formed
by changing existing rocks under heat and pressure
are called metamorphic rocks. The metamorphic
process happens in between these two temperatures,
and they defi ne the upper and lower levels of
metamorphism.
It is important to understand that metamorphism
takes place when the mineral phases of a certain
rock are in solid state. This is why metamorphism
processes are “solid state processes”, with not many
or minimum volatile phases (water or carbon dioxide).
Besides, the system is isochemical: the volumetric
chemical composition of the rock is non-variant
and the new mineral species (neo-forming species)
are conditioned by the original chemicals.
The way temperature and pressure rise in the diff erent
points of the crust is not the same. Some areas are
anomalously hot, with great magmatism and where
temperature rises very quickly the deepest it is, especially
near the magma pockets near the surface.
On the contrary, in our planet there are some areas
anomalously cold where temperature is relatively
low even at great depth. This means that some rocks
that have undergone a metamorphic transformation
will suff er changes in the mineralogy and texture
due to the temperature rise. Whereas in some other
rocks pressure and strain are the most important factors
in the mineral change.
According to the factor that controls the metamorphic
process there are three types:
1. Contact metamorphism: it happens in margins
around intrusive substances in the process of cooling
down. In these cases the temperature factor is much
higher than the pressure factor, and this means the
re-crystallization and transformation of the rocks surrounding
the contact.
2. Dynamic metamorphism: the pressure, and
consequently the strain, clearly predominates over
temperature. These rocks are subject to several types
of “mineral milling” and re-crystallization of some
mineral species. The rocks resulting from this type
of metamorphism develop in areas where there was
maximum strain. This metamorphism is typical in
faults areas.
3. Regional metamorphism: pressure and temperature
are important in this metamorphism, and
they create some “degrees” and metamorphic “facies”.
This is the most common type of metamorphism
and also the most complex. It happened in the great
orogenic processes.
Pay attention to pressure variations and especially to
temperature during the “metamorphic event”. As the
parent rock – called protolite- suff ers the temperature
rise and eventually also the pressure rise, the
original mineral phases start experiencing the necessary
changes to “adapt” to the environment.
At a certain point, it reaches the maximum temperature
and the rock develops a mineral association that
will defi ne a metamorphic degree or metamorphic
facies. The stable re-crystallized mineral association
for that pair [P-T] is known as metamorphic mineral
paragenesis.
One of the characteristics of metamorphic rocks is
the preferential orientation of their minerals due to
the fact that they have developed in an environment
with conducted pressure. The resulting orientation
defi nes the foliation or slate cleavage of the metamorphic
rock. Slate cleavage (foliation): typical structure
of metamorphic rocks. It consists in a group of
parallel surfaces, more or less separated, that give
these materials certain cleavability.
Then, the mica sheets that re-crystallize during the
metamorphism process are aligned parallel to one
another giving the rock that particular appearance.
The resulting textures depend on the intensity of the
transformation processes and on the minerals that
form the new rock.
This characteristic structure, called foliation, is typical
in rocks like slate, schist and gneiss.
• Slate is metamorphic clay and is found in metamorphic
environments. Parallel, very straight and fi ne-
grained foliated rocks that split into thin sheets. It is
usually greyish. Sometimes it contains fossils.
• Schist is a rock that has undergone a more intense
metamorphism than slates. Slightly deformed foliated
rocks and if there were some fossils in the parent
rock, they would disappear during the metamorphic
process.
• Gneiss is a high grade metamorphic rock. It is coarser
than schist and has distinct banding. This banding
has alternating layers that are composed of diff erent
minerals. The minerals that compose gneiss are
quartz, feldspar and mica (like granite), but they are
orientated in dark and bright bands.
Finally other common metamorphic rocks:
• Marble: It is a carbonated rock (like limestone) that
has undergone a metamorphism. It has a characteristic
crystalline appearance.
• Quartzite is metamorphosed quartz-rich sandstone.

couches de roche massive on appelle litifi cation.
(Fig. 1, 2 et 3).
Calcites:
• Ambiants marins, inorganiques ou biochimiques,
plates-formes, banques et lacunes côtières.
• Bioclastiques:
o Coquine
o Crète.
• Non clastiques:
o Travertine.
o Stalactites et stalagmites.
o Oolithes.
Dolomies:
magmatiques), et de diverse taille et géométrie;
(Fig. 4)
(anatexe) du manteau supérieur, qu’i possède une
composition ultrabasique.
On trouvaitá
long de l’événement métamorphique».
Elles
sont métamorphiseés.
