Le cahier des charges d’étude de l’amplificateur précisait les principales caractéristiques qui se résument de la manière suivante : o Bande de fréquence : Bande X,(8.025-8.420GHz), o Température de bruit : < 25K, o Gain : > 45 dB+/- 2 dB o R.O.S < 1.3 o Ondulation : < 1.5 dB, o Environnement: Station sol fixe. (-20°C, +50°C) Dans ces conditions, le gain en performances est significatif: Pour une antenne de 6.4 mètres de diamètre, les performances accusent une amélioration de G/T de 1.75 dB à 15° de site, pour un G/T calculé de 34.4 dB. Pour une antenne de 4,5 mètres de diamètre, les performances accusent une amélioration de G/T de 1.96 dB à 15° de site, pour un G/T calculé de 32,1 dB. o Pour une antenne de 3,2 mètres de diamètre, les performances accusent une amélioration de G/T de 1.96 dB à 15° de site, pour un G/T calculé de 29,17 dB. o Avec le circuit hybride refroidi, l’évaluation de la chaîne d’amplification ( Gain et température de bruit ) est calculée en prenant en compte la contribution de l'isolateur d'entrée, des transitions et des circuits d'adaptation d’entrée, le facteur de bruit du premier transistor et la contribution des autres étages d'amplification. Le calcul donne une température de bruit estimée de 23K, et un gain de 45 dB. La solution repose sur l'intégration d'un amplificateur hyperfréquence placé au centre d'un cryostat. Les calculs thermiques ainsi que le dimensionnement du refroidisseur ont été confiés à la société Air Liquide. (DTA-Grenoble), L'objectif étant de maintenir le module hybride à la température aux alentours de -200°C. La solution retenue s'est tournée vers la mise en œuvre d'un cryogénérateur dont la puissance est de 3 Watts à 20 °C et de 1.5Watts à 70°C. Une puissance d'entrée de 120Watts sous 28 VDC est alors nécessaire. Un équipement de contrôle asservit la puissance du cryogénérateur et stabilise la température du module refroidi à la température de consigne. Les informations de contrôle et de puissance instantanée sont disponibles sur un port RS 232. Des mesures de température de bruit ont été effectuées sur l'ensemble complet et indique des valeurs de l'ordre de 24K. Cette valeur étant essentiellement liée à la température maintenue par le cryogénérateur. Par principe, elle est indépendante de la température du milieu (- 20°C à +50°C). Non refroidi, l'amplificateur à une température de bruit de l'ordre de 70K, et il faut moins de 30' de fonctionnement du cryogénérateur pour que ledit amplificateur atteigne ses réelles performances. Le calcul de fiabilité a été effectué selon la norme HDBK 217 E. Il est dimensionné par le MTBF de 15000heures du cryogénérateur.
L’aide à la maintenance s’effectue sur un PC via un convertisseur DC/AC . Des informations importantes permettent une aide aisée à la maintenance : o Information de puissance, o Durée de fonctionnement, o Limitation de puissance, o Contrôle de la température. Un vieillissement ( 1000h à 20°C avec des marches/arrêts hebdomadaires ) de la pompe cryogénique a montré un bon comportement de l'ensemble cryogénique. Un critère non négligeable de l’étude, notamment en terme de coût, a été de prendre en considération les possibilités de pouvoir utiliser un maximum d’éléments spécifiques comme le cryostat, la pompe, les coaxiaux, le boîtier microélectronique pour d’autres applications. En effet, par modification de la transition d’entrée, des adaptations à des amplificateurs en bande C, Ku et Ka peuvent être aisément envisagées. La présente étude a montré les possibilités d'atteindre les performances souhaitées sur les critères de spécifications électriques, dimensionnelles et de fiabilité. Toutefois, des difficultés technologiques, inhérentes à ce type d’étude, n’ont pas toujours permis une bonne reproductibilité et nécessitent un complément aux solutions techniques mises en œuvre.
