The Ca Sagarra Space for Memory is designed as the
entrance to visit the bunker but also as a centre for the
introduction to the history of Valls and a starting point for
visiting other spaces related with historical memory, such as
the Hospital de Sang (the Blood Hospital), the cemetery or the
airfield, to name the most significant.
The Ca Sagarra Gothic Room and the Plaza del Blat
Bunker have been designed as a museum, offering visitors
the chance to get to know a very important part of the history
of Valls, corresponding to the period spanning from 1931 to
1979, from the Second Republic to the Transition to
democracy, through the Civil War and Franco’s rule, within the
framework established for the various democracy memorial
centres in Catalonia.
In addition, it is a new museum facility in the Old quarters,
which will lead to the functional development of many
activities, both permanent and one-off events, in the search
for the tourism promotion of the city and a better knowledge
of its history.
THE BUNKER. Valls 1938. The danger of being bombed
encouraged people to dig ditches and build bunkers
across the city. The Plaza del Blat bunker was built based
on the project designed by municipal architect Josep M. Vives
Castellet. The project manager was Ramon Claravalls and the
citizens of Valls helped build it. It is a gallery-type underground
bunker, covered with bricks. It is approximately 8 metres
underground, with galleries 1.80 metres high and 1.60 metres
wide. Today the area open to visitors occupies a length of
approximately 55 metres.
