P<strong>la</strong>ça <strong>de</strong>l B<strong>la</strong>t<br />

Bunker<br />

The Ca Sagarra Space for Memory is <strong>de</strong>signed as the<br />

entrance to visit the bunker but also as a centre for the<br />

introduction to the history of Valls and a starting point for<br />

visiting other spaces re<strong>la</strong>ted with historical memory, such as<br />

the Hospital <strong>de</strong> Sang (the Blood Hospital), the cemetery or the<br />

airfield, to name the most significant.<br />

The Ca Sagarra Gothic Room and the P<strong>la</strong>za <strong>de</strong>l B<strong>la</strong>t<br />

Bunker have been <strong>de</strong>signed as a museum, offering visitors<br />

the chance to get to know a very important part of the history<br />

of Valls, corresponding to the period spanning from 1931 to<br />

1979, from the Second Republic to the Transition to<br />

<strong>de</strong>mocracy, through the Civil War and Franco’s rule, within the<br />

framework established for the various <strong>de</strong>mocracy memorial<br />

centres in Catalonia.<br />

In addition, it is a new museum facility in the Old quarters,<br />

which will lead to the functional <strong>de</strong>velopment of many<br />

activities, both permanent and one-off events, in the search<br />

for the tourism promotion of the city and a better knowledge<br />

of its history.<br />

THE BUNKER. Valls 1938. The danger of being bombed<br />

encouraged people to dig ditches and build bunkers<br />

across the city. The P<strong>la</strong>za <strong>de</strong>l B<strong>la</strong>t bunker was built based<br />

on the project <strong>de</strong>signed by municipal architect Josep M. Vives<br />

Castellet. The project manager was Ramon C<strong>la</strong>ravalls and the<br />

citizens of Valls helped build it. It is a gallery-type un<strong>de</strong>rground<br />

bunker, covered with bricks. It is approximately 8 metres<br />

un<strong>de</strong>rground, with galleries 1.80 metres high and 1.60 metres<br />

wi<strong>de</strong>. Today the area open to visitors occupies a length of<br />

approximately 55 metres.<br />

The tours are gui<strong>de</strong>d and require purchasing a ticket<br />
