organized for two reas<strong>on</strong>s, mainly for the study <strong>and</strong> collecti<strong>on</strong><br />

of a species named, Lasiosiph<strong>on</strong> amb<strong>on</strong>drombensis<br />

Boiteau (Thymelaeaceae), but also so that the c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong> of<br />

the primary vegetati<strong>on</strong> remaining <strong>on</strong> the mountain could be<br />

evaluated.<br />

Lasiosiph<strong>on</strong> amb<strong>on</strong>drombensis is a species of particular<br />

interest to botanists, because the plant is endemic to the<br />

summit of the mountain, it was last collected in 1941, <strong>and</strong> it<br />

is a visually attractive shrub with many yellow tubular flowers<br />

(Figure 2). One particularly interesting observati<strong>on</strong><br />

about the flora of Amb<strong>on</strong>drombe, is that it is quite different<br />

in compositi<strong>on</strong> from the vegetati<strong>on</strong> found <strong>on</strong> the Andringitra<br />

massif, a mountain located about 60-air km southwest of<br />

Amb<strong>on</strong>drombe. Both mountains are at comparable elevati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

<strong>and</strong> have similar soils <strong>and</strong> geologies.<br />

Trip to the Summit<br />

Amb<strong>on</strong>drombe is such a mysterious place that <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>on</strong>e<br />

man from the nearby village, called a “Dadarabe” (a spiritual<br />

guide <strong>and</strong> medicine man), is permitted to climb to the<br />

summit. Before beginning the ascent (c. 1050 m elevati<strong>on</strong>),<br />

the guide must first ask for permissi<strong>on</strong> to climb the mountain<br />

from the groups’ deceased ancestors. A ritualistic benedicti<strong>on</strong><br />

must also be performed. The benedicti<strong>on</strong> is chanted<br />

softly <strong>and</strong> can be roughly translated into English as follows:<br />

“These people who have come to this mountain, would like<br />

to go to the peak of Amb<strong>on</strong>drombe, <strong>and</strong> we want to have<br />

permissi<strong>on</strong> from you, our ancestors, <strong>and</strong> from the l<strong>and</strong>owners<br />

of this area; we are a mixture of people, some<br />

<strong>Malagasy</strong>, some foreigners, <strong>and</strong> I am from you, your child;<br />

we ask that you, our ancestors, guide us safely to the summit”.<br />

The “Toaka gasy” (<strong>Malagasy</strong> rum) is then poured <strong>on</strong><br />

the ground in the “Zoro firarazana” (a place in the NE corner<br />

of the <strong>Malagasy</strong> home for prayer), <strong>and</strong> everybody in<br />

the village, including small children, must drink a small<br />

amount of potent <strong>Malagasy</strong> alcohol.<br />

After the ritual is complete, the group can begin climbing<br />

the mountain <strong>and</strong> after three hours will arrive at the<br />

campsite just inside the humid forest (c. 1400 m elevati<strong>on</strong>).<br />

At the camp, the Dadarabe chants another benedicti<strong>on</strong> into<br />

the forest, so the group can sleep overnight in tents without<br />

disturbances. After the sec<strong>on</strong>d benedicti<strong>on</strong>, “toaka gasy” is<br />

poured into three short pieces of bamboo surrounding a<br />

small sacrificial alter, covered by a banana leaf (Figure 3).<br />

To appease the spirits, a chicken must be sacrificed <strong>and</strong> the<br />

blood is put aside for the guide to c<strong>on</strong>sume the next morning.<br />

The chicken is cooked <strong>and</strong> a few pieces of the liver<br />

<strong>and</strong> rice must be placed in three small piles <strong>on</strong> the banana<br />

leaf covering the altar.<br />

On this occasi<strong>on</strong>, as the chicken was being prepared,<br />

two strange sounds, in rapid successi<strong>on</strong>, were heard emanating<br />

from the forest. The sounds were loud <strong>and</strong> highpitched,<br />

similar to the mating calls of frogs. The Dadarabe<br />

was startled by the noises <strong>and</strong> spoke in a loud voice into<br />

the forest, “Please wait, we are cooking the food now; it<br />

will be ready for you in a few minutes”. The guide informed<br />

the group that the spirits would disturb unwelcome guests<br />

during the night, if the sacrifice had not been performed<br />

properly.<br />

any amin’ity voalaza farany. Mitovy anefa na ny aav<strong>on</strong>’izy<br />

ireo, na ny firafitry ny tany sy ny toe-tany.<br />

Ny dia nananika ny tamp<strong>on</strong>y<br />

izy alohan’ny hianihana ny tendrombohitra (tok<strong>on</strong>y ho<br />

1.050 m). Mihira izy amin’ny fangataham-pitahiana : “ Teh<strong>and</strong>eha<br />

eny an-tamp<strong>on</strong>’ny tendrombohitra ireto ol<strong>on</strong>a ireto<br />

ka mangataka ny famelanareo razana sy tomp<strong>on</strong>-tany.<br />

Misy <strong>Malagasy</strong>, misy vazaha izahay ireto. Izaho izay miteny<br />

moa dia zanakareo ka managataka aminareo izahay<br />

mba ho hieren-doza sy hitarika anay hatrany an-tamp<strong>on</strong>’ny<br />

vohitra”. N<strong>and</strong>rarahana taoka gasy teo amin’ny zoro<br />

firarazana ary nisotro tamin’izany toaka izany avokoa ny<br />

ol<strong>on</strong>-drehetra tao an-tanana, eny fa na ny ankizy aza dia<br />

nomena kely.<br />

Niazo ny lalana miakatra izahay rehefa vita izany<br />
