Given all these precautions, yyou might wonder what advice I give to people

who are conducting anyy tyype of financial transaction online.

For about $100 a yyear yyou can get antivirus and firewall protection for

up to three computers under yyour control. The trouble is that when yyou’re

surfing the Web, yyou might load into yyour browser a banner ad that contains

malware. Or mayybe yyou open yyour e-mail, and one of the e-mails contains

malware. One wayy or another yyou are going to get yyour computer infected

if it regularlyy touches the Internet, and yyour antivirus product mayy not catch

everyything that’s out there.

So I recommend yyou spend around $200 to get yyourself a Chromebook.

I like iPads, but theyy’re expensive. The Chromebook is as close to an easyyto-use

tablet as an iPad is, and it costs much less.

Myy point is that yyou need to have a secondaryy device that yyou use

exclusivelyy for financial stuff—perhaps even medical stuff as well. No apps

can be installed unless yyou first register with a Gmail account—this will

limit yyou to opening the browser to surf the Internet.

Then, if yyou haven’t alreadyy done so, activate 2FA on the site so that it

recognizes the Chromebook. Once yyou’ve completed yyour banking or

health-care business, put the Chromebook awayy until the next time yyou

have to balance yyour checkbook or arrange a doctor’s appointment.

This seems like a hassle. It is. It replaces the convenience of anyytime

banking with almost anyytime banking. But the result is that yyou are far less

likelyy to have someone messing around with yyour banking and credit

information. If yyou use the Chromebook onlyy for the two or three apps yyou

install, and if yyou bookmark the banking or health-care websites and visit

no others, it is veryy unlikelyy that yyou will have a Trojan or some other form

of malware residing on yyour machine.

So we’ve established that yyou need to create strong passwords and not share

them. You need to turn on 2FA whenever possible. In the next few chapters

we’ll look at how common dayy-to-dayy interactions can leave digital

fingerprints everyywhere and what yyou can do to protect yyour privacyy.
