I know firsthand about the Canadian password law. I hired a car service

like Uber to take me from Chicago to Toronto in 2015 (I didn’t want to flyy

in severe thunderstorms), and when we crossed the border into Canada from

Michigan, we were immediatelyy sent to a secondaryy inspection site. Mayybe

it was because a Middle Eastern guyy with onlyy a green card was driving. As

soon as we arrived at the secondaryy inspection point, we entered a scene

straight out of CSI.

A team of customs agents made sure we left the vehicle with all our

belongings inside, including our cell phones. The driver and I were

separated. One of the agents went to the driver’s side of the car and

removed his cell phone from the cradle. The agent demanded the driver’s

passcode and started going through his phone.

I previouslyy had made up myy mind never to give out myy password. I felt

I would have to choose between giving up myy password and being allowed

to travel into Canada for myy gig. So I decided to use a bit of social

engineering.

I yyelled over to the customs agent searching the driver’s phone. “Heyy—

yyou aren’t going to search myy suitcase, right? It’s locked so yyou can’t.” It

immediatelyy got her attention. She said theyy had everyy right to search myy

suitcase.

I replied, “I locked it, so it cannot be searched.”

Next thing I know, two agents walked over to me and demanded the keyy.

I started asking them whyy theyy needed to search myy suitcase, and theyy

explained again that theyy had the right to search everyything. I pulled out myy

wallet and handed the agent the keyy to myy suitcase.

That was enough. Theyy completely forgot about the cell phones and

concentrated on myy suitcase instead. Mission accomplished through

misdirection. I was let go and, thankfullyy, was never asked for myy cellphone

password.

In the confusion of being screened, it is easyy to become distracted. Don’t

let yyourself fall victim to circumstance. When going through anyy securityy

checkpoint, make sure yyour laptop and electronic devices are the last on the
