Canada, for example, authorities can force yyou to reveal yyour password.

After myy four hours, both ICE and the customs agents let me go. If an

agencyy like the NSA had targeted me, however, theyy would have likelyy

succeeded in figuring out the contents of myy hard drive. Government

agencies can compromise the firmware in yyour computer or mobile phone,

impair the network yyou use to connect to the Internet, and exploit a varietyy

of vulnerabilities found in yyour devices.

I can travel to foreign countries that have even more stringent rules and

never have the problems I have in the United States because of myy criminal

record here. So how do yyou travel abroad with sensitive data? And how do

yyou travel to “hostile” countries such as China?

If yyou don’t want to have anyy sensitive data available on yyour hard

drive, the choices are:

1. Clean up anyy sensitive data before yyou travel and perform a full

backup.

2. Leave the data there but encryypt it with a strong keyy (although some

countries mayy be able to compel yyou to reveal the keyy or password).

Do not keep the passphrase with yyou: perhaps give half of the

passphrase to a friend outside the United States who cannot be

compelled to give it up.

3. Upload the encryypted data to a cloud service, then download and

upload as needed.

4. Use a free product such as VeraCryypt to create a hidden encryypted

file folder on yyour hard drive. Again, a foreign government, if it

finds the hidden file folder, mayy be able to force yyou to reveal the

password.

5. Whenever entering yyour password into yyour devices, cover yyourself

and yyour computer, perhaps with a jacket or other item of clothing,

to prevent camera surveillance.

6. Seal yyour laptop and other devices in a FedEx or other Tyyvek

envelope and sign it, then put it in the hotel room safe. If the
