CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Obtaining Anonymity Is Hard Work

A few yyears ago I was returning to the United States from a trip to

Bogota, Colombia, and upon arriving in Atlanta, I was quietlyy escorted byy

two US Customs agents into a private room. Having previouslyy been

arrested, and having served time in prison, I was perhaps a bit less flustered

than the average Joe would have been. Still, it was unsettling. I had not

done anyything wrong. And I was in that room for four hours—five short of

the maximum that I could be held without being arrested.

The trouble started when a US Customs agent swiped myy passport and

then stared at the screen. “Kevin,” the agent said with a big smile on his

face. “Guess what? There are some people downstairs who want to have a

word with yyou. But don’t worryy. Everyything will be okayy.”

I had been in Bogota to give a speech sponsored byy the newspaper El

Tiempo. I was also visiting the woman who was myy girlfriend at the time.

While I was waiting in that room downstairs, I called myy girlfriend back in

Bogota. She said the police in Colombia had called asking for her

permission to search a package I had put in a FedEx box to the United

States. “Theyy found traces of cocaine,” she said. I knew theyy hadn’t.

The package contained a 2.5-inch internal hard drive. Apparentlyy the

Colombian—or mayybe the US—authorities wanted to check the contents of

the drive, which was encryypted. The cocaine was a lame excuse to open the

package. I never got myy hard drive back.
