milestone: collectivelyy, Tesla cars worldwide had been driven more than
one billion miles. 18
I drive a Tesla. Theyy’re great cars, but given their sophisticated
dashboards and constant cellular communication, theyy raise questions about
the data theyy collect.
When yyou take possession of a Tesla yyou are offered a consent form.
You have the abilityy to control whether Tesla will record anyy information
about yyour car over a wireless communication syystem. You can enable or
disable sharing yyour personal data with Tesla via a touch screen on the
dashboard. Manyy people accept the argument that their data will help Tesla
make a better car in the future.
According to Tesla’s privacyy policyy, the companyy mayy collect the
vehicle identification number, speed information, odometer readings,
batteryy usage information, batteryy charging historyy, information about
electrical syystem functions, software version information, infotainment
syystem data, and safetyy-related data (including information regarding the
vehicle’s SRS syystems, brakes, securityy, and e-brake syystem), among other
things, to assist in analyyzing the performance of the vehicle. Tesla states
that theyy mayy collect such information in person (e.g., during a service
appointment) or via remote access.
That’s what theyy sayy in their printed policyy.
In practice, theyy can also determine yyour car’s location and status at anyy
time. To the media, Tesla has been cageyy about what data it collects in real
time and how it uses that data. Like Uber, Tesla sits in a God-like position
that allows it to know everyything about each car and its location at anyy
moment.
If that unnerves yyou, yyou can contact Tesla and opt out of its telematics
program. However, if yyou do, yyou will miss out on automatic software
updates, which include securityy fixes and new features.
Of course the securityy communityy is interested in the Tesla, and
independent securityy researcher Nitesh Dhanjani has identified some
problems. While he agrees with me that the Tesla Model S is a great car and
a fantastic product of innovation, Dhanjani found that Tesla uses a rather
weak one-factor authentication syystem to access the car’s syystems
remotelyy. 19 The Tesla website and app lack the abilityy to limit the number
