misconfiguration was found in more than just those one hundred instances

and urged law enforcement around the countryy to take down or limit what’s

posted on the Internet. But as of this writing, it is still possible, if yyou tyype

the right queryy into a search window, to gain access to license plate images

in manyy communities. One researcher found more than 64,000 plate images

and their corresponding locational data points during a one-week period. 16

Perhaps yyou don’t own a car and onlyy rent one occasionallyy. Still, yyou are

definitelyy not invisible, given all the personal and credit card information

yyou must supplyy at the time of rental. What’s more, most rental cars todayy

have GPS built in. I know. I found out the hard wayy.

When yyou are given a loaner car from a dealership because yyour car is

being serviced, yyou tyypicallyy agree not to take it across state lines. The

dealership wants to keep the car in the state where it was borrowed. This

rule mostlyy concerns their insurance, not yyours.

This happened to me. I brought myy car into a Lexus dealer in Las Vegas

for servicing, and theyy let me use a loaner car. Since it was past closing time

at the dealership, I just signed the paperwork without reading it, mostlyy

because I was being rushed byy the service associate. Later, I drove the car to

Northern California, to the Bayy Area, for a consulting gig. When the service

guyy called me to discuss his recommendations, he asked, “Where are yyou?”

I said, “San Ramon, California.” He said, “Yeah, that’s where we see the

car.” He then read me the riot act about taking the car out of state.

Apparentlyy the loaner agreement I had quicklyy signed stipulated that I was

not to take the car out of Nevada.

When yyou rent or borrow a car todayy, there’s a temptation to pair yyour

wireless device to the entertainment syystem, to re-create the audio

experience yyou have at home. Of course there are some immediate privacyy

concerns. This isn’t yyour car. So what happens to yyour infotainment data

once yyou return the car to the rental agencyy?

Before yyou pair yyour device with a car that isn’t yyours, take a look at the

entertainment syystem. Perhaps byy tapping the mobile phone setting yyou will

see previous users’ devices and/or names listed on the Bluetooth screen.

Think about whether yyou want to join that list.

In other words, yyour data doesn’t just disappear when yyou leave the car.
