The Martti Airio Collection (on permanent display), comprises Finnish paintings from the 1870s to the 1990s, furniture, oriental carpets and small objects. Changing exhibitions 24.2.–21.5. EMMA AINALA Emma Ainala’s (b. 1989) extensive solo exhibition opens the 2017 exhibition programme at Mikkeli Art Museum. In Emma Ainala’s dream-like paintings, the viewer finds a mysterious world with references to both popular culture and the history of art and mythology. The versatile layers in the paintings and their melancholy create an even contradictory atmosphere: they are like revelatory glimpses of another world where the viewer has exceptionally been allowed to peak in. 24.2.–21.5. BETWEEN THE PAST AND THE FUTURE Finnish State Art Commission 60 years The Finnish State Art Commission will celebrate its anniversary by showing its extensive collection with a series of exhibitions across different parts of Finland. The exhibition entities are selected by Marketta Haila. The collection of The Finnish State Art Commission is one of the largest in Finland, consisting of approximately 13 600 works of art. The works for the collection are acquired from exhibitions and directly from the artists. Public contract works are a central part of the collection. 10.6.–10.9. MIKKELI’S 11 th ILLUSTRATION TRIENNIAL For the 11th time, the illustration triennial will display the best works of Finnish illustrators and the extensive scope of illustration art. The foreign guest is Swiss graphic artist, illustrator Paula Troxler (b. 1981), who lives and works in Zurich. Mikkeli Art Museum organises the illustration triennial in co-operation with Grafia ry and Kuvittajat ry. Mikkeli’s 11th illustration triennial and Lahti’s 20th poster triennial together form a part of the programme for Finland’s centenary of independence. 22.9.2017–4.2.2018 TOMMI TOIJA Sculptor Tommi Toija (b. 1974) is known for his little ceramic characters who stare at the surrounding world in wonder with their large eyes.
