ST. PETER'S CHURCH, AUGUST 5, 2012 YONKERS
Twenty years ago, Marianne Wilson saw a need;
thousands of people with critical illnesses were going
hungry in her area of Southern California, and she just
wasn't going to stand for it. She began cooking healthy
meals and delivering them to men, women and children
dying from HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other diseases at no
cost to the recipients. Today, the organization is known
as Project Angel Food, and every year produces over
400,000 meals and delivers them to more than 1,600
people. On its Web site, it says, "We act out of a sense of
urgency because hunger and illness do not wait."
It had been barely twenty-four hours since the
miracle of the loaves and fishes; thousands had found
nourishment. Jesus and his disciples had crossed the Sea
of Galilee to Capernaum, and still many in the crowd
from the day before found him, wanting another miracle.
But Jesus offered them and us a greater miracle; if we are
only to believe in the Son of God, we will never hunger
again. Our faith is our work; this work will be generously
rewarded.
In the Lord's Prayer we pray "Give us this day our
daily bread." Fully understanding today's Gospel reading
from John enables us to comprehend the dual meaning of
this petition: our bodies will hunger, please provide
nourishment, and our souls hunger, please provide
through our faith the bread of life that is faith in Jesus
Christ. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us
that "the drama of hunger in the world calls Christians
who pray sincerely to exercise responsibility toward their
brethren, both in their personal behavior and in their
solidarity with the human family"

for the Church in Latin America and the Catholic Home
Missions. Your gift to the Collection provides greatly needed
pastoral care and religious training to rural communities and
indigenous populations, helping to guide people’s faith with
genuine Catholic teaching. Envelopes are available in the rear of

If you will be away on vacation, please don’t forget – parish

The Zumba Toning Class will resume meeting every Saturday
beginning August 4th from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm. Classes are held

It’s Summer – As we enter summer and we think about
weekend picnics, trips to the beach and vacations, there are two
very important things we should keep in mind”
1. The summer is a time for vacations from work and school;
but it is not a time for vacation from church. We are called to
keep holy the Lord’s Day throughout the year, including the
summer months. Don’t forget about Sunday Mass.
2. During the hot weather, we should remember to dress,
appropriately for giving worship to God. Mass times while
traveling – Parishioners who are traveling may call 1 (800)
627-7846 (1-800-MASTIME) for the location and schedule of
Masses in Catholic Churches throughout the USA.

The Madrinas program is currently offering $1000
scholarships to help make tuition more affordable. Applications
are available for students to register now. The deadline to submit
an application is June 13, 2012. Non-Catholic students are eligible
for the scholarships.

registration fee is $70 and must be paid before September 1 st .
After September 1 st the fee will be $10 more per child.

Todos los días vemos como la gente busca su felicidad
por medio de las cosas materiales. Así vemos que muchas
personas buscan el dinero por medios mal habidos y no por un
trabajo honrado; otras piensan que viajando y derrochando su
dinero con personas famosas serán felices. Pero ni el poder, ni
el dinero, y ni la fama hacen plenamente felices a los seres
humanos. ¿Dónde está entonces la felicidad que buscamos? ¿O
es qué no nos saciamos con nada?
El Evangelio de hoy nos brinda una respuesta muy
acertada: "El que viene a mí no tendrá hambre y el que cree en
mí nunca tendrá sed". Es en estas palabras que está encerrado
todo el secreto de la felicidad humana, aunque muchos no lo
queramos creer y continuemos buscando en otros lados la
felicidad. Invitar a que Dios forme parte de nuestra vida y
buscarlo sinceramente es el principio de la felicidad. San
Agustín, quien fue un hombre que luchó por muchos medios
hasta encontrar a Jesús, escribió: "O Dios, hiciste nuestro
corazón para ti y está inquieto hasta que descanse en ti". La
Madre Teresa de Calcuta expresó lo siguiente: "Los pobres de
América Latina tienen más hambre de Dios que de Pan".
Iniciemos hoy nuestro compromiso de búsqueda sincera
de entregar nuestro corazón a Dios. No pidamos a Dios
únicamente bienes materiales. Estos son necesarios, es cierto,
pero no esenciales. No busquemos a Dios solamente en los
momentos de angustia y necesidad. Seamos más bien cristianos
de compromiso y no sólo de interés. Así nos daremos cuenta
que esto significa la verdadera felicidad. Nuestra misión es
acercarle a todos a Jesús, quien es la felicidad eterna. Sólo él
llena las expectativas más profundas del ser humano.

The farmer’s market at St. John’s Church in Getty Square is
open every Thursday from July until November from 8 a.m. to 4
p.m. Several farmers from upstate New York come every
Thursday and sell a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, baked pies,
cakes and seasonal plants. A flea market will also be featured with
vendors selling a variety of merchandise. Refreshments will be for
sale from early morning thru mid-afternoon. For more

St. Peter’s Food Pantry is open each Tuesday and Friday from
10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. We serve over 200 families each week.
We thank you for your help. The need has increased so
significantly that we want to continue serving those who depend so
much on the food that they receive each week. Summer Hours will
