From the first words of the “Sighthound Festival
Journal” nothing is better than celebrating
our common passion – together with Sighthound
fanciers from around the world.” I have
been very fortunate in spending my whole
life surrounded with these amazing creatures.
During this time, I have made so many friends
all around the world. We may not speak the
same language, we sometimes never know
much about the people we spend time with
or ever see them again and sometimes many
years pass before we meet again, but it doesn’t
matter, we all love Sighthounds… That’s what
matters.

I was truly honoured to be asked to judge
Borzois on Saturday and very humbled by the
entry of nearly 100. I thought the standard
was high and had some difficult choices to
make along the way. As a breed specialist it
is always thought provoking to assess hounds
and be constructive by highlighting the points
which as a breeder I would feel are worthy of
note. There is a distinct variation in head types,
which you would expect from breeders input,
my main concern was the shape of the ribcage
as there was a trend for the depth of brisket
to be short and some would have benefitted
from more spring to the rib. Generally, movement
was sound with good width to and fro,
and in profile some could have had more reach
in front.
My best male was I thought outstanding in
balance, shape and had a classical type with
super veining to his masculine head. He looked
lovely on the move and well deserved his
awards.
My Best Female and BOB was of a totally different
type and combined the elegance and
substance required of a Borzoi so fit for function.
She is totally balanced and has the most
wonderful conformation with muscle tone and
shape.
I was particularly pleased with the quality of
the youngsters, I thought they were well reared
and sound and exactly right for their ages.
On Saturday evening a real delight to watch
the BOB and winners parade and compete
for BIS followed by the Eukanuba Challenge.
What a fun event and lovely to do a bit
of ‘sight’ judging !
Sunday’s judging was in the warm sunshine,
much appreciated by all. The quality of my
first breed Pharaoh Hounds is always good
and I was not disappointed. If there was a prize
for the dog I would like to take home one of
them would have been from the baby class,
stunning!
My Best male was clearly the best male in
conformation and movement (apart from the
baby!!) a beautifully elegant male, although
I preferred the head type of the female who I
thought was beautifully made and had a nice
blunt head. She was more mature in body and
showed the right gait.
The Deerhounds I enjoyed immensely, quality
was high although there was a clear difference
in types, but this made it much more
interesting and I thought there were so many
very well made hounds. Some decisions came
down to preference of head types, my best
male and BOB was a lovely young male who
I thought had it all. A classic head and body
shape and showed such typical movement, not
any show dog gait here. Loved him.
My best bitch was of different type but I I
loved her conformation and feminine head.
Elegance and substance combined, she moved
beautifully.
Although standing alone, the Ibizan Hound
was of a very nice type. Balance head with
good proportions. Still to mature but moved
nicely.
