ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — For
the first time in 27 years, the U.S.
government is changing how it
categorizes people by race and
ethnicity, an effort that federal officials
believe will more accurately
count residents who identify as
Hispanic and of Middle Eastern
and North African heritage.
The revisions to the minimum
categories on race and
ethnicity, announced Thursday
by the Office of Management and
Budget, are the latest effort to label
and define the people of the
United States. This evolving process
often reflects changes in social
attitudes and immigration, as
well as a wish for people in an increasingly
diverse society to see
themselves in the numbers produced
by the federal government.
“You can’t underestimate
the emotional impact this has on
people,” said Meeta Anand, senior
director for Census & Data Equity
at The Leadership Conference on
Civil and Human Rights. “It’s how
we conceive ourselves as a society.
... You are seeing a desire for
people to want to self-identify and
be reflected in data so they can
tell their own stories.”
Under the revisions, questions
about race and ethnicity that
previously were asked separately
on forms will be combined into a
single question.

A Middle Eastern and North African category will be added to the choices available for questions about
race and ethnicity. People descended from places such as Lebanon, Iran, Egypt and Syria had been encouraged
to identify as white, but now will have the option of identifying themselves in the new group. Results
from the 2020 census, which asked respondents to elaborate on their backgrounds, suggest that 3.5 million
residents identify as Middle Eastern and North African.
“It feels good to be seen,” said Florida state Rep. Anna Eskamani, a Democrat from Orlando whose parents
are from Iran. “Growing up, my family would check the ‘white’ box because we didn’t know what other box
reflected our family. Having representation like that, it feels meaningful.”
The changes also strike from federal forms the words “Negro” and “Far East,” now widely regarded as
pejorative, as well as the terms “majority” and “minority,” because they fail to reflect the nation’s complex racial
and ethnic diversity, some officials say. The revisions also encourage the collection of detailed race and ethnicity
data beyond the minimum standards, such as “Haitian” or “Jamaican” for someone who checks “Black.”
Grouping together people of different backgrounds into a single race and ethnicity category, such as
Japanese and Filipino in the Asian classification, often masks disparities in income or health, and advocates
argued having the detailed data will allow the information about the subgroups to be separated out in a process
called disaggregation.
“To be able to disaggregate can really be helpful to distinguish different kinds of discrimination, the ability
to enforce laws around discrimination and do research on public health and economic outcomes,” said Allison
Plyer, chief demographer of The Data Center in New Orleans.
The changes to the standards were hammered out over two years by a group of federal statisticians
and bureaucrats who prefer to stay above the political fray. But the revisions have long-term implications for
legislative redistricting, civil rights laws, health statistics, and possibly even politics as the number of people
categorized as white is reduced.
Donald Trump, the presumptive GOP nominee for president, recently alluded to arguments made by people
who allege Democrats are promoting illegal immigration to weaken the power of white people. As president,
Trump unsuccessfully tried to disqualify people who were in the United States illegally from being included in
the 2020 census.
Momentum for changing the race and ethnicity categories grew during the Obama administration in the
mid-2010s, but was halted after Trump became president in 2017. It was revived after Democratic President
Joe Biden took office in 2021.
The changes will be reflected in data collection, forms, surveys and the once-a-decade census questionnaires
put out by the federal government, as well as in state governments and the private sector because
businesses, universities and other groups usually follow Washington’s lead. Federal agencies have 18 months
to submit a plan on how they will put the changes in place.

Racial and ethnic categories used by the U.S. government reflect their times.
In 1820, the category “Free Colored People” was added to the decennial census to reflect the increase
in free Black people. In 1850, the term “Mulatto” was added to the census to capture people of mixed heritage.
American Indians were not explicitly counted in the census until 1860. Following years of immigration from
China, “Chinese” was included in the 1870 census. There was not a formal question about Hispanic origin until
the 1980 census.
Not everyone is on board with the latest revisions.
Some Afro Latinos feel that combining the race and ethnicity question will reduce their numbers and representation
in the data, though previous research by the U.S. Census Bureau did not find significant differences
among Afro Latino responses when the questions were asked separately or together.
Mozelle Ortiz, for instance, is of mixed Afro Puerto Rican descent. She feels the changes could eliminate
that identity, even though people can choose more than one answer once the race and ethnicity questions are
combined.
“My entire lineage, that of my Black Puerto Rican grandmother’s and all other non-white Spanish speaking
peoples, will be erased,” Ortiz wrote the interagency group.
Others are unhappy about how some groups of people such as Armenians or Arabs from Sudan and Somalia
were not included in the examples used to define people of Middle Eastern or North African background.
Maya Berry, executive director of the Arab American Institute, said that while she was “incredibly happy”
with the new category, that enthusiasm was tempered by the omissions.
“It is not reflective of the racial diversity of our community,” Berry said. “And it’s wrong.”

story of ‘Arepa Con Que’ with passion, perseverance, and the pursuit of a dream as they journey from Venezuela
to the United States. Ivón, born in the Venezuelan state of Aragua and raised in Valencia in the state of Carabobo
since the age of five, brings extensive accounting experience and a deep connection to Venezuelan cuisine.
Meanwhile, David’s lifelong fascination with Venezuelan food and culture inspired him to conceive ‘Arepa Con
Que’ as more than just a restaurant; it’s a labor of love, a tribute to his roots, and a testament to the power of
food to unite cultures and create community.
For Ivón and David, opening ‘Arepa Con Que’ was a dream come true but also a leap of faith. With dedication
and determination, they turned their vision into reality, pouring their hearts and souls into every aspect of
the restaurant, from the menu to the decor.
“Today we thank God and then this country, the United States, for the opportunity to unfold and grow little
by little to what we are today and to be part of this great free and friendly nation,” expressed Santiago, reflecting

Jamie Ufnar, a Melbourne native, has been a frequent customer at ‘Arepa Con Que’ since her daughter
introduced her to the empanadas, which she can’t get enough.
“They melt in your mouth when you bite into them,” exclaimed Ufnar. “I was born and raised in Melbourne,
and this is, by far, the best one yet.”
Despite being relatively new to the restaurant scene, having visited the place for only about two months,
Ufnar has quickly become a loyal customer, visiting at least once a week.

“Here we were open every day, thank God, not a single day closed,” Ivón commented, emphasizing their

into a time capsule were craftsmanship and camaraderie reign supreme. The shop is owned by Johomar Torres
from Morobis, Puerto Rico, and he has been the owner for over 4 years. When I asked Johomar about Alex
being a part of his team, he replied, “the best choice made, and now a family member!”
Alex did not just stumble into the world of barbering; it chose him. From an early age, he was fascinated
by the meticulous artistry involved in shaping hair and grooming beards. However, it was not merely the

Celebrating Women’s Month: Painting
Smiles for Brevard at Bonita Ranch
MELBOURNE — In the serene landscapes of Bonita Ranch, a lush ecological agricultural retreat located
in Melbourne, the Brevard Hispanic Center organized a vibrant celebration to commemorate Women’s Month,
evoking the grand events of the past where artists like Leonardo Da Vinci, Miguel Ángel, and other Renaissance
masters delighted in the melodies of the violin while bringing their magnificent works of art to life. Event participants
enjoyed classical pieces like Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and Mozart’s Eine Kleine, among others. It was a
magical moment as they expressed their creativity on canvas.
The event “Painting Smiles for Brevard,” organized by the Brevard Hispanic Center, welcomed over seventy
attendees on the morning of Saturday, March 30, promoting art, creativity, and camaraderie among those
present.
Yenny Passanante, owner of Bonita Ranch, warmly welcomed all participants by opening the doors of her
beautiful event space and agricultural retreat with enthusiasm.
The event, coordinated by Blanca Rubio, Program Director and key figure in Painting Smiles for Brevard,
stood out as an invitation to community participation and artistic expression.
“The Painting Smiles for Brevard program is based on two fundamental pillars: the first is to promote art in
the community, encouraging more people to join our events to learn and improve techniques, regardless of their
level of experience. The second pillar is to support local artists, helping them gain visibility and integrate into the
community,” explained Rubio.
Additionally, Rubio expressed gratitude to guest artist Amaris Rosario, sponsors, volunteers, participants,
guest artists, and, of course, to Brevard Hispanic Center President Javier Molinares, whose support has been
crucial in keeping the program running.
The painting session was captivating under the guidance of artist Amaris Rosario, who showcased her
talent while participants explored their own creativity. Through her teachings, Rosario captured the diversity of
femininity with a palette of colors that formed a true visual kaleidoscope. Her conviction that art is a means of
self-expression and introspection resonated with everyone present, encouraging them to delve into their innermost
thoughts and freely express their creativity on canvas.
“There is no perfection in expression,” stated Rosario. “Women are like a garden of colors, a variety that
reflects their connection with their own hearts.”
Yenny Passanante, owner of Bonita Ranch, passionately shared how her nursery and event venue businesses
complement each other to promote sustainability and cultural enrichment. Bonita Ranch, with its extensive
grounds, emerged as the ideal setting for the event, offering a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle
of daily life.
“As Hispanic entrepreneurs in the nursery and event venue industry, we take pride in representing our
community. We merge our nursery business with event organization to provide sustainable alternatives to the
wedding and event industry,” said Passanante. “We invite everyone to visit our nursery for plants to beautify their
gardens and gifts, as well as to celebrate high-end events in a Mediterranean-influenced setting.”
At the event, both experienced artists and enthusiastic beginners had the opportunity to explore their artistic
inclinations in a supportive and celebratory atmosphere, surrounded by art, music, and the natural beauty of
the surroundings. Additionally, there were draws for beautiful plants from Bonita Ranch’s nursery and a charming
balloon arrangement with products offered by BalloonsbyIva. It was a day filled with pampering and enjoyment
of the magnificent art event.
The enthusiasm for the program was evident among the participants. Adalyn Cameron, an 11-year-old,
was amazed by the transformative power of art, finding comfort and joy in the creative process. Her experience
resonated with many others present, each building their own unique connection with art.
With the sun bathing Bonita Ranch and casting a warm light on the shared laughter and memories, it was
evident that the event had genuinely honored the spirit of Women’s Month. Each brushstroke and violin note
strengthened the bonds within the community, leaving an indelible mark on all those fortunate enough to be
present.
The event featured artists such as Amaris Rosario and volunteers from the Brevard Hispanic Center,
including Zandra Ramirez (artist), Randa Yordi (artist), Leala Dunn (Art Jam artist), Danyele Murchison (Art
Jam artist), Nivia Suarez (ELI, English teacher), Sasha Lukuts, Ingrid Murcillo, Karina Caminos, Rosa Garcia,

delighted everyone with her wonderful talent.

Daniel Suárez, a pioneer hailing from Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico, has demonstrated a remarkable
ability to overcome adversity throughout his career. His journey to NASCAR stardom commenced in his
homeland, where he honed his racing skills in karting before making significant strides in the NASCAR PEAK
Mexico Series. Suárez’s breakthrough moment arrived in 2016 when he clinched the NASCAR Xfinity Series
championship, etching his name in history as the first Mexican-born driver to triumph in a NASCAR national
series race.
Since then, Suárez has forged an illustrious career, competing at NASCAR’s highest levels and securing
victories across various series, including his recent electrifying win at Atlanta Motor Speedway on February 25th,
where he edged out his competitors by a mere 0.003 seconds in a breathtaking photo finish. During the final lap,
Suárez, positioned on the outside of Busch and Blaney, emerged triumphant as the trio crossed the finish line
almost simultaneously. The replay confirmed Suárez’s victory, showing that he had outpaced Blaney by 0.003
seconds and Busch by 0.007 seconds. Reflecting on his extraordinary journey, Suárez acknowledges the pivotal
role played by the Drive for Diversity program.
“As a young pilot coming from Mexico without knowing English, without knowing culture, without having
connections, it’s very important to have an extra support,” said Suarez. “I think for me it was the Drive for Diversity
program that gave me the opportunity to show my talent and to compete in the K &N category now called
ARCA, to show what I could do and to learn about culture, learn about cars, learn about communication, learn
about interviews.”
The NASCAR Drive for Diversity program is an educational initiative to nurture and train drivers on and
off the racetrack. It caters to top drivers from various backgrounds and experiences, offering them coaching,
mentoring, and developmental opportunities. This comprehensive program combines experienced executives,
competition staff, and state-of-the-art equipment. Participants compete under the banner of Rev Racing in multiple
developmental series, including the ARCA Menards Series, NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series,
and INEX Legend cars.
Rev Racing, the competition arm of the NASCAR Drive for Diversity Program, actively develops drivers
and pit crew members from diverse backgrounds. Supported by NASCAR, the team prepares participants for
future competitions at the highest levels of the sport. To be eligible for the NASCAR Drive for Diversity Program,
applicants must meet certain qualifications. They must be between the ages of 15 and 22 as of October 1st of
the current year. Additionally, they must be legally eligible to work in the United States.
“I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. I think if it had not been for the Drive for Diversity program, I wouldn’t
be here today. And honestly, today I think the Drive for Diversity program is much more complete than when I
was there 10 years ago,” said Suarez about the program. “The Drive for Diversity program is much better than
when I was there. I feel very happy and proud that the program is still growing and improving.”
Suárez’s impact extends beyond the race track, reflecting his stellar achievements on it. As a dedicated
ambassador for Freeway Insurance, his primary sponsor, he embodies resilience and determination, inspiring
numerous fans around the globe.
Amid the vibrant atmosphere at the racetrack, Cesar Soriano, CEO of Freeway Insurance, radiated confidence
as he discussed their partnership with Suárez.

Pérez de Lara revealed that his introduction to racing came through his father, Ricardo, who was also a

but also as a person, as a driver and as a career, also as an athlete,” said Pérez de Lara. “It helps you in every

Currently, Perez de Lara splits his time between Mexico and Charlotte, North Carolina, where he works at
the Rev Racing shop. Engaging in rigorous training regimes at the gym and honing his skills in simulators, Perez

Latino voters are coveted by both major
parties. They also are a target for election.
PHOENIX (AP) — As ranchera music filled the Phoenix recording studio at Radio Campesina, a station
personality spoke in Spanish into the microphone.
“Friends of Campesina, in these elections, truth and unity are more important than ever,” said morning
show host Tony Arias. “Don’t let yourself be trapped by disinformation.”
The audio was recorded as a promo for Radio Campesina’s new campaign aiming to empower Latino
voters ahead of the 2024 elections. That effort includes discussing election-related misinformation narratives
and fact-checking conspiracy theories on air.
“We are at the front lines of fighting misinformation in our communities,” said María Barquín, program
director of Chavez Radio Group, the nonprofit that runs Radio Campesina, a network of Spanish-language
stations in Arizona, California and Nevada. “There’s a lot at stake in 2024 for our communities. And so we need
to amp up these efforts now more than ever.”
Latinos have grown at the second-fastest rate, behind Asian Americans, of any major racial and ethnic
group in the U.S. since the last presidential election, according to a Pew Research Center analysis, and are
projected to account for 14.7%, or 36.2 million, of all eligible voters in November, a new high. They are a growing
share of the electorate in several presidential and congressional battleground states, including Arizona,
California and Nevada, and are being heavily courted by Republicans and Democrats.
Democratic President Joe Biden has credited Latino voters as a key reason he defeated Republican
Donald Trump in 2020 and is urging them to help him do it again in November. Given the high stakes of a presidential
election year, experts expect a surge of misinformation, especially through audio and video, targeting
Spanish-speaking voters.
“Latinos have immense voting power and can make a decisive difference in elections, yet they are an
under-messaged, under-prioritized audience,” said Arturo Vargas, CEO of NALEO Educational Fund, a national
nonprofit encouraging Latino civic participation. “Our vote has an impact. These bad actors know this, and one
way to influence the Latino vote is to misinform.”
In addition to radio, much of the news and information Latinos consume is audio-based through podcasts
or on social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp and YouTube. Content moderation efforts in Spanish
are limited on these platforms, which are seeing a rising number of right-wing influencers peddling election
falsehoods and QAnon conspiracy theories.
The types of misinformation overlap with falsehoods readily found in other conservative media and many
corners of the internet — conspiracy theories about mail voting, dead people casting ballots, rigged voting
machines and threats at polling sites.
Other narratives are more closely tailored to Latino communities, including false information about immigration,
inflation and abortion rights, often exploiting the traumas and fears of specific communities. For example,
Spanish speakers who have immigrated from countries with recent histories of authoritarianism, socialism,
high inflation and election fraud may be more vulnerable to misinformation about those topics.
Misinformation on the airwaves also is particularly difficult to track and combat compared with more
traditional, text-based misinformation, said Daiquiri Ryan Mercado, strategic legal adviser and policy counsel
for the National Hispanic Media Coalition, which runs the Spanish Language Disinformation Coalition. While
misinformation researchers can more easily code programs to categorize and track text-based misinformation,
audio often requires manual listening. Radio stations that air only in certain areas at certain times also can be
difficult to track.
“When we have such limited representation, Spanish speakers feel like they can connect to these people,
and they become trusted messengers,” Mercado said. “But some people may take advantage of that trust.”
Mercado and others said that’s why trusted messengers, such as Radio Campesina, are so important.
The station was founded by Mexican American labor and civil rights leader César Chavez and has built a loyal
listening base over decades. At any given moment, as many as 750,000 people are listening to the Chavez
Radio Network on the air and online, Barquín said.
“They will come and listen to us because of the music, but our main focus is to empower and educate
through information,” she said. “The music is just a tactic to bring them in.”
Radio Campesina’s on-air talent and musical guests often discuss misinformation on air, answering listeners’
questions about voting, teaching them about spotting misinformation and doing tutorials on election processes
such as how to submit mail-in ballots. The station also has hosted rodeos and music events to register
new voters and talk about misinformation.
They allow listeners to call or text questions on WhatsApp, a social media platform especially popular with
immigrant communities but where much of the misinformation they see festers. In March, the station partnered
with Mi Familia Vota, a Latino advocacy group, for an on-air show and voter phone bank event to answer voter
questions.
“We know that there are many people who are unmotivated because sometimes we come from countries
where, when it comes to elections, we don’t trust the vote,” said Carolina Rodriguez-Greer, Arizona director of
Mi Familia Vota, before she shared information on the show about how voters can track their ballots.
The organization began working with Spanish media outlets to dispel misinformation after seeing candidates
such as former Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake spread election lies in 2022, Rodriguez-Greer
said. Lake is now running for the U.S. Senate with Trump’s endorsement.
“One way to combat this misinformation is to fill the airways with good information,” said Angelica Razo,
national deputy director of campaigns and programs for Mi Familia Vota.
In Tempe, Brian Garcia tunes into Radio Campesina on drives to work. When he was growing up, the
station played as his dad cooked dinner and his family gathered around the table. It was a staple for his family,
he said, and he’s excited about its efforts to tackle election misinformation.
“There aren’t many organizations or folks that go onto Spanish language media to combat misinformation
and disinformation,” he said. “And I think serving as a resource and a trusted source within the Latino community
that has already built those relationships, that trust will go a long way.”
A variety of other community and media groups also are prioritizing the seemingly never-ending fight
against misinformation.
Maritza Félix often fact-checked misinformation for her mother, whom she calls the “Queen of WhatsApp.”
This led to Félix doing the same for family and friends in a WhatsApp group that grew into the Spanish news
nonprofit Conecta Arizona.
It now runs a radio show and newsletter that debunks false claims about election processes, health,
immigration and border politics. Conecta Arizona also combats misinformation about the upcoming Mexican
presidential election that Félix said has been seeping over the border.

food truck and restaurant venture
Melbourne, Florida - Mayra Paulina Olivas Flores and her husband, Julio Gamas Perez, have carved out
a successful niche in the culinary world with their food truck and restaurant venture, “La Bendición de Dios.”
From humble beginnings in Shenandoah, Iowa, the couple’s journey has taken them from working on a chicken
farm to owning their own thriving food business in Melbourne.
Originally from Hidalgo del Parral, Chihuahua, Mexico, Mayra moved to the United States with her family
at a young age and grew up in Iowa. After graduating from Shenandoah High School, she began working on
a chicken farm, eventually transitioning to starting a cleaning company with her husband when the farm they
worked for closed down.
Their entrepreneurial spirit led them to Florida in 2018, seeking new opportunities. They settled in Melbourne,
where Julio’s sister resided, and decided to start a food truck. “Spotless Cleaning” was transformed
into “La Bendición de Dios,” offering tacos, quesadillas, and tortas to eager customers.
“The food truck is located at 3330 W New Haven Ave in Melbourne, Florida,” Mayra revealed.
The food truck quickly gained popularity for its fresh ingredients and flavorful dishes. In 2019, the couple
expanded their business by opening a restaurant, “Taqueria La Bendición de Dios,” located at 2000 Palmdale
Rd NE in Palmdale, FL 32905. The menu features popular items such as Steak/Asada Taco, Chicken/Pollo
Taco, Pork/Al Pastor Taco, Pork Sausage/Longaniza Taco, and Cow Tongue/De Lengua Taco, priced from
$2.25 to $2.75.
With their dedication to fresh ingredients and quality service, they have garnered positive attention. They
recently made a significant contribution to the community by donating 180 tacos to the “Painting Smiles for
Brevard” event, celebrating Women’s Month on March 30 at Bonita Ranch.
“It’s always good to donate and give back to the community. And also, it puts the name of the business
out there for people that don’t know about it,” Mayra expressed.
Their journey is a testament to hard work and perseverance, as they continue to run their food truck and
restaurant with passion and commitment.

Sensational Sarasota: Exploring
the jewel of Florida’s West Coast
Sarasota, a beautiful city – perhaps lesser known because it is on Florida’s west coast – is
a real “find” for travelers who wish to explore beyond cities like Miami, Tampa and Orlando – as it
combines excellent cultural attractions with natural charms.
These qualities attracted 3.2 million visitors in 2023, according to the Sarasota Convention &
Visitors Bureau. Here, about an hour by car from Tampa and two hours from Walt Disney World in
Orlando, on a weekend escape or longer stay, visitors find sand as white as marshmallows. Many
insist, and rightly so in my opinión, that Florida’s west coast beaches are better than the more
frequented east coast ones, and their waters are warmer, offering a warm embrace to visitors. Sarasota
and its surroundings boast 35 miles of coasts and six barrier islands, so beaches abound and
Stephen Leatherman a.k.a. “Dr. Beach” has named one of Sarasota’s beaches, Siesta Beach, as
the best, not just in Florida, but all the U.S., twice in his annual reports. Another extremely popular
beach is Venice Beach, called the “Shark’s Tooth Capital,” because of the great number of fossil
shark’s teeth found on its sands. This beach hosts an annual spring festival with music, food and
exhibits dedicated to sharks.
Other charms of Sarasota include world-class museums and entertainment centers, excellent
commercial districts and restaurants and fun family-friendly attractions.
After enjoying the city’s panoramas with modern buildings and the picturesque Sarasota Bay,
there is a lot to experience when it comes to cultural attractions. Sarasota and surroundings are
known as Florida’s “cultural coast” with its own ballet and opera companies and more than 7,000
seats for plays, concerts and other events, as well as a variety of museums. Among the latter, the
Ringling Art Museum, is a “must” as it is a world-class institution including an art museum, a circus
museum (“Ringling” is synonymous with the circus as is Sarasota since John Ringling established
the winter seat of his circus in the city in the 1920s and Cesar B. DeMille filmed “The Greatest Show
On Earth” there in 1950). Circus acts are presented and there are exhibits about the history of this
form of entertainment. Admission to the gardens is always free and to the Ringling Art Museum it is
free on Mondays.
The city also has attractions ideal for families. Among these, Mote Marine Aquarium is an
excellent facility with a shark hábitat with 135,000 gallons of water. Other áreas of interest include
aquaria with marine turtles, rays and manatees. Mote Marine also offers five virtual reality experiences
including swimming with whales.
Another very popular attraction is Sarasota Jungle Gardens, one of my favorites, and one of the
oldest in Florida, established in 1939. It has 10 acres and hosts lemurs, crocodiles and other reptiles
and trained birds that perform in shows. A hugely popular attraction in Jungle Gardens is the “Flamingo
Petting Zoo” where visitors can feed and pet these beautiful birds (extra cost experience). “They
swarm around you --it’s wild,” exclaimed Joe Granata, a visitor from Orlando. (extra charge). Also
available for extra charge are opportunities to pet and pose for photos with lemurs, reptiles or birds.
Plant lovers may wish to check out Selby Botanical Gardens, a 45-acre garden in two locations
in Sarasota, with many áreas of interest including a koi pond.
For souvenirs, St. Armands Circle is one of the most popular shopping áreas in Sarasota. It
has130 shops and boutiques as well as art galleries, restaurants and the “Círcle Ring of Fame” that
honors great circus acts.

Lodging: There is a great variety of hotels in Sarasota and surroundings. Hilton has several
hotels including Embassy Suites Sarasota and a Homewood Suites by Hilton (www.hilton.com) that
are practical for families as they have suite accommodations with kitchen or kitchenette and free

De educadora a campeona de la comunidad:
Diana Chaves baila por una causa

una dinámica educadora de
Cali, Colombia, ha entrelazado
hábilmente su amor por la enseñanza
con una nueva pasión
por el compromiso comunitario
y la filantropía. Su trayectoria,
que comenzó con un título en
idiomas y comunicaciones de la
Universidad de Florida Central
(UCF), la ha llevado a través de
varios roles educativos, moldeándola
en la figura inspiradora
que es hoy.
Inicialmente, Chaves navegó
las complejidades de la
enseñanza en la Escuela Secundaria
Rockledge (Rockledge
High School), donde enfrentó
los desafíos de adaptarse de un
entorno escolar privado a uno
público.
“Mi primera experiencia fue
terrible porque yo no sabía,”
recuerda Chaves. “Yo había
estado en un colegio privado
donde todo el mundo obedece
a los profesores, como que les
tiene miedo a los profesores, a
una cultura completamente diferente
aquí en Estados Unidos,
a los colegios públicos.”

su reputación como una

“Yo prácticamente estuve
en Rockledge como por ocho
años,” comenta Chaves. “Yo
prácticamente crecí con mis estudiantes;
yo era como una más
porque era muy jovencita en mi
primer trabajo grande que yo
había tenido.”
El siguiente capítulo en la
vida de Chaves se desarrolla
con la llegada de la maternidad,
lo que la llevó a cambiar su enfoque
hacia la educación primaria
en la escuela de su hijo. Esta

llevó a la Escuela Charter Sculptor,

básico”.
Sin embargo, su regreso a
la escuela secundaria, esta vez
en la Escuela Secundaria Titusville,
marcó un hito significativo
en su carrera. Aquí, Chaves
encontró una sensación de regreso
a casa, aprovechando su
vasta experiencia para conectarse
con los estudiantes adolescentes.
Además de sus esfuerzos
profesionales, Chaves participa
activamente en su comunidad.
Se ofrece como voluntaria en
el Club Latinoamericano de
Titusville, donde orienta a estudiantes
sobre opciones de
carrera y etiqueta profesional,
personificando el espíritu de
servicio y empoderamiento.
Además, Chaves es la imagen

From Educator to Community Champion:
Diana Chaves Dances for a Cause
TITUSVILLE - Diana Chaves, a dynamic educator from Cali, Colombia, has skillfully intertwined her love
for teaching with a newfound passion for community engagement and philanthropy. Her journey, which began
with a degree in languages and communications from the University of Central Florida (UCF), has taken her
through various educational roles, molding her into the inspirational figure she is today.
Initially, Chaves navigated the complexities of teaching at Rockledge High School, where she faced the
challenges of adapting from a private to a public-school environment.
“My first experience was terrible because I didn’t know,” recalls Chaves. I had been in a private school
where everyone obeyed the teachers, like they were afraid of them, a completely different culture here in the
United States, in public schools.”
Despite the initial hurdles, her dedication and perseverance over eight years of teaching Spanish and
French at Rockledge High School solidified her reputation as a committed educator.
“I practically spent eight years in Rockledge,” comments Chaves. “I practically grew up with my students;
I was like one of them because I was very young in my first big job.”
The next chapter in Chaves’ life unfolds with the arrival of motherhood, leading her to shift her focus to
elementary education at her son’s school. This transition eventually brought her to Sculptor Charter School,
where she spent five fulfilling years nurturing young minds in language acquisition.
“I wanted a change after eight years in high school. I wanted something supposedly calmer while I educated
my son and he grew up,” said Chaves, who affirms that this new experience as a Spanish teacher was
different from the previous one. “Teaching teenagers is different from teaching young children, where you need
a lot of energy. It would help if you stayed maintained; you become like an entertainer. I also taught those young
children Spanish, but much more basic.”
However, her return to high school, this time at Titusville High School, marked a significant milestone in her
career. Here, Chaves found a sense of homecoming, drawing on her vast experience to connect with teenage
students.
In addition to her professional endeavors, Chaves is actively involved in her community. She volunteers
at the Latin American Club of Titusville, where she mentors students on career options and professional etiquette,
embodying the spirit of service and empowerment. Furthermore, Chaves serves as the face of various
advertising campaigns and is an ambassador for Medaesthetis, a full-service spa that provides a wide range of
non-surgical cosmetic procedures.
Recently, Chaves embraced a new challenge by participating in Dancing for the Space Coast, a local
adaptation of the successful television show Dancing with the Stars. Representing Best Bodies, an organization
dedicated to inclusivity and support for people with disabilities, Chaves seized the opportunity to make a difference.
Her participation in Dancing for the Space Coast is more than just a dance competition; it’s a platform for
advocacy and philanthropy. Chaves aims to raise awareness and funds for charitable causes close to her heart
by showcasing her dancing skills.
With the gala event approaching on June 1, 2024, at Florida Institute of Technology - Clemente Center,
Chaves encourages community members to support this noble cause. Through her participation, she hopes to
inspire others to embrace diversity and make a tangible difference in the lives of those in need.
Now in its ninth year, Dancing for the Space Coast selects three local charities to address children’s needs,
crime prevention, and the arts. Proceeds from Dancing for the Space Coast support these charities and their
incredible commitment to positively impact and strengthen our Brevard County community. Additionally, 10% of
the event’s proceeds go directly to support the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Charity, Inc., established to assist
Brevard County law enforcement officers and firefighters/paramedics in times of need.
This year, the charities that will benefit from the Dancing for the Space Coast event are Aging Matters,
Spacecoast Discovery, Space Coast Basket Brigade/Best Buddies, and The Brevard County Public Safety Charity.
As Chaves continues to leave an indelible mark on her community, her journey is a testament to the
transformative power of education, philanthropy, and the pursuit of new challenges. Her dedication and passion
embody the spirit of positive change, inspiring those around her to strive for excellence and compassion.

comunitarios y ciudadanos,
se unieron a mí en mis esfuerzos
para apoyar la misión
de Serene Harbor de
poner fin al ciclo de violencia
doméstica en el condado
de Brevard. Durante más de
tres décadas, Serene Harbor
ha sido un faro de esperanza,

The Mayor of Palm Bay presents
his April 2024 message
I’d like to begin my April Mayor’s Message with a sincere and heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended
the 2024 Mayor’s Ball, benefitting Serene Harbor. On March 23, nearly 150 guests, including sponsors, local
dignitaries, community partners, and citizens joined me in my efforts to support Serene Harbor’s mission to end
the cycle of domestic violence in Brevard County. For over three decades, Serene Harbor has been a beacon
of hope, a lifeline for those caught in the grips of domestic violence. They have stood as a steadfast pillar of
support, offering sanctuary, guidance, and unwavering compassion to those in their darkest hour. Thank you to
our Brevard County Sheriff, Wayne Ivey, for joining me in this effort and handling our live auction. To everyone
who attended, donated, or provided any support honoring this cause, thank you from the bottom of my heart. That
evening was truly a testament to the boundless compassion and generosity that defines our city.
I hope you all were able to join us for the Third Annual Palm Bay Multicultural Festival presented by Thrifty
Specialty Produce and Meats, Cocina Cafe, and the City of Palm Bay on March 23. Rain or shine, we were out
there celebrating! This free event showcased culture, dance, music, food, and hands-on activities from countries
around the world. We had live entertainment featuring the Spinning Canvas Dance Troupe, the Sifu Och Wing
Chun Dancing Lions, food and craft vendors, face painting, glitter tattoos, inflatables for the kids, and much more.
This annual event is sure to be even bigger next year!
In February, I had the pleasure of joining City staff for the most fascinating tour of Shapes Precision Manufacturing
here in Palm Bay! It was an incredible experience getting an inside look at how they craft some of the
most innovative custom-crafted parts used worldwide, including aviation, marine, and space industries. They
even fabricate parts for the F35! Shapes Precision Manufacturing also has an incredible partnership with Bayside
High School’s Career Technical Education Program. The attention to detail and dedication to quality are evident
in every step of their manufacturing process.
In March, the City of Palm Bay held a groundbreaking ceremony for our City’s highly anticipated new Building
E. This groundbreaking event signifies a significant step forward for Palm Bay. With a total square footage of
39,142, Building E will stand as a beacon of innovation and service excellence. This moment marks a significant
milestone in the development of our beloved city, a testament to our commitment to progress and prosperity.
The total cost of this monumental endeavor amounts to $16,519,379. Funding for this project is a combination
of ARPA grant funds and Building Department funds, showcasing the City’s commitment to investing in its infrastructure
for the betterment of its residents. This state-of-the-art facility will house Utilities Customer Service, the
Building Department, and the IT Department. This will benefit our residents by creating a customer service hub
and bringing our 41 Building Department employees back on campus, as they have been leasing space across
the street in the plaza since 2020. This new building will also free up space in one of the old buildings to allow our
Police Department to expand, as they have outgrown the current building. Keep an eye out for project updates
on the City’s social media pages!
Also, in the beginning of March, I had an amazing time celebrating Little League opening night by throwing
out the first pitch for Palm Bay East Little League!
I was honored to speak at the Marine Resources Council (MRC) 20th birthday celebration for the Ted
Moorhead Lagoon House a couple of weeks ago. The MRC and the City are proud to be partners, doing our part
to improve the water quality of the Indian River Lagoon, an estuary of national significance and the jewel of Brevard
County. Recognizing the importance of the Lagoon to our residents and all of Brevard County, the City has
made significant commitments of resources to help support the health of the Lagoon, including the installation of
seven nutrient-separating baffle boxes in northeast Palm Bay. We will continue our partnership and commitment
to protecting and restoring our precious Indian River Lagoon.
Join me in congratulating Amazing Glaze on becoming the second quarter Mayor’s Business Spotlight
Program winner for 2024! Amazing Glaze, located at 3540 Jupiter Blvd. SE, Unit 5, is a paint-your-own pottery
studio and has been a family-owned and operated established business in Palm Bay since February 2023. They
have often been referred to as a “therapeutic experience” by their customers, offering a creative space where individuals
of all ages can unleash their artistic talents by painting a variety of ceramic pieces such as mugs, plates,
bowls, figurines, and more! These items serve as blank canvases for customers to decorate according to their
preferences. Aside from providing day-to-day customers with a family-friendly activity, Amazing Glaze gives back
to the community by supporting schools, churches, and nonprofits through various donations and sponsorships.
They host field trips, birthday parties, large groups, and a monthly LEGO meet-up for children of all ages. They
even bring the joy of painting to elderly housing communities to promote inclusivity. Amazing Glaze provides
citizens of Palm Bay with a space to enjoy quality time with loved ones and create lasting memories together
through laughter and conversation and I am #PalmBayProud to honor them this quarter!
Some exciting news! Palm Bay is being recognized by Southern Living Magazine as one of the Top Rising
Cities in 2024. Palm Bay was ranked No. 13 out of 25 based on research, editors’ experiences, and reader input.
According to Southern Living, “Saltwater fishing and unspoiled nature have long been the draw of this sleepy
Space Coast town. But big things are on the way with a major development project called Ashton Park that is
projected to add thousands of homes and about 5 million square feet of retail and commercial space to the area.”
This project will create a Towne Center affect for Palm Bay.
Each April, we celebrate Earth Day. If you’re looking for a family-friendly opportunity to celebrate Mother
Nature, come out to Fred Poppe Regional Park on Saturday, April 13, from 4-7:00 pm for the Second Annual Sustainability
Fair hosted by the City of Palm Bay Sustainability Advisory Board. Enjoy food vendors, eco-vendors, a
FREE rain barrel workshop (pre-registration required), sustainable demonstrations, and more! End the night with
a special Earth Day Movie in the Park sponsored by the Palm Bay Utilities Department.

Empowering Your Child To Be Resilient
Giving our children/grandchildren some tools to increase their ability to be resilient is a way parents/grandparents/guardians can help their child/
teen navigate the bullying experiences they may be encountering in person or online. The intended goal is to help them recover from the impact of
being treated in a hurtful way. If a student learns to “bounce back” from the challenges they face, they might also begin to regain their sense of personal
power.
Two researchers on online bullying (cyberbullying.org) recommend the ABC Model of Resilience, first proposed by Psychologist Albert Ellis, as
one approach to help increase a child/teen’s ability to recover from stressful situations.
A = Adversity / the Bullying Situation (A child/teen reads a hurtful post on social media)
B = Our Beliefs of Why It Happened (That child/teen might think “No one likes me” instead of thinking “______ must be an unhappy person”)
C = The Consequential Feelings (That child/teen might become depressed, feel powerless, get angry, engage in self-harm, seek revenge, etc.)
Some students may think of themselves as a person no one likes, will put themselves down and may think that the bullying will continue. Rather
than believe the negative thoughts about themselves, a different way to react is to remember that they do have caring/supportive friends/family and
maybe the person who wrote the post or said the hurtful words feels they must bully others because they are unhappy. The person who wrote the post
is the one who has done something wrong. A more positive thought process enables a child/teen to begin recovering from the hurtful situation. Visit

física. Si cuidas tu cuerpo,
comes correctamente
y haces ejercicio, tu cuerpo
responderá favorablemente.
La mejor manera de explicar
lo que estoy diciendo es usar
mis propias experiencias.
A los 86 años, que incluyeron
nueve años de
fútbol más el saltar de un
lado a otro en barcos y submarinos
durante mis 38
años de vida en la Marina,
mis rodillas simplemente se
rindieron. Tuve cirugía en
mi rodilla izquierda primero
sin complicaciones. Pero
cuando intenté ponerme de
pie, el dolor era intenso y la
rodilla no me sostenía. He
pasado los últimos tres años
intentando volver a caminar.
Mis rodillas no me permitirán
levantarme a menos
que tenga un andador u otro

The state of one’s health
Those of you who have followed me know that I place great emphasis on physical fitness. If you take care of your body, eat correctly, and exercise,
your body will respond favorably. The best way to explain what I am saying is to use my own experiences.
At age 86, which included nine years of football plus bouncing around on ships and submarines during my 38 years of Navy life, my knees just
gave out. I had surgery on my left knee first with no complications. But when I tried to stand, the pain was intense, and the knee would not support me.
I have spent the last three years trying to walk again. My knees will not get me to a standing position unless I have a walker or similar device–and that
will only last for a minute or two. I have tried water therapy, in-home and outpatient therapy, and my own workout exercises, all to no avail.
While I am not a therapist, I know what helps me and what does not. Often, the limiting factor is the way Medicare dictates the times and duration
of weekly therapy. In both the in-home and outpatient therapies, I started with visits three days a week, then two, then one, then it ended. I asked
if I could continue at my own expense but was refused.
My last outpatient therapy session got me on my feet with a walker, but the dwindling sessions did not give me the PUSH I needed to stay out
of the wheelchair. My current in-home therapist is outstanding, doing hard leg exercises that will help me stand and walk short distances. At age 90 I
think this is a good goal.
The problem now is that I can only get four more weeks of in-home therapy, then Medicare dictates that I move to outpatient therapy. For both
in-home and outpatient therapy, Medicare has a one-size-fits-all plan that includes a certain number of sessions per week, for a set number of weeks
based on patient progress as determined by an assessor. In my own case, I would prefer to get five sessions a week to start off and then have my
therapist decide on cutbacks based on his/her assessment.
Compounding the problem is that every assessor visit counts as a patient care visit. Since I have physical therapy (leg) and occupational therapy
(upper body), both OT and assessor visits count against physical therapy visits, thereby lessening the number of care visits for my legs.
When you are in a wheelchair fighting to get back on your feet, having to work through all the system nuances, you might wonder at the way we
help people. It is frustrating to have a type of care work for you and then have it limited. The real problem is that the system does not work for everyone,
and I happen to be one of the exceptions. Fortunately, my doctor understands the problem and is helping me get the care I need.
