ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES ARE PART
OF THE PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS
FOR R&D WORK AND DESIGN
REVIEWS CONFIRM THAT THE
SET REQUIREMENTS ARE MET.
Sustainability and Quality. Since its founding, Genelec’s design philosophy
has been based on sustainable development and environmental values,
aiming to deliver performance-driven, tonally truthful monitor and subwoofer
systems for audio professionals and enthusiasts.
We want our customers to experience that Genelec provides the best quality
in the industry. Our quality is based on ethically sound corporate values,
excellent service and delivery as well as superior products, which conform
to all agreed requirements through the entire design, manufacturing, delivery
and service chain.
One key element of our total quality approach is the continuous development
of all processes, products and environmental issues. This continuous
improvement is part of our daily work. We believe that in this way we are
building the basis for long-term success and sustained growth.
Our operation highlights our commitment to environmental values. We plan
our operations so that the production, application and recycling of the product
is implemented with minimum energy and by using sustainable methods.
We comply with environmental laws and regulations and are committed to
being a responsible corporate citizen. Conservation of natural resources and
efficient use of materials and energy as well
as long product lifetime are essential to us.
We live up to these principles on a day-to-day
basis. Commitment to quality and sustainable
development is an attitude to be taken
personally. Commitment to quality is continuously
supported by Genelec management.
that Genelec meets the international
standards and that our operations are regularly
verified by third party certification bodies.

Sustainable Development Principles. The general guideline for us in all
operations is to minimize the carbon footprint of our operation and to follow
the certified Genelec Quality and Environmental Policy.
Our sustainable development policy follows these priorities, starting with the
most desirable option: Prevent/minimize the creation of waste and use of
energy • Re-use waste for its original purpose whenever possible • Recycle
waste for other purposes • Use waste for secondary purposes, for example
energy production • Produce non-recyclable waste.
The first priority translates to long product life cycle, reliability and low power
consumption, which have been important since the beginning of the company.
The requirements resulting from environmental issues are considered
equal to other business goals on the management level, and the whole
company supports sustainable development.
Environmental issues are part of the product specifications for R&D work
and design reviews confirm that the set requirements are met. The process
starts by defining the requirements from customers and regulations from the
European Union and Finnish government. In practice this means we consider
the overall environmental effects of each product. We have processes for
the evaluations of materials including product packaging, for environmental
issues during manufacturing and also for after-sales issues such as energy
consumption during use, servicing and final recycling.
Genelec active loudspeakers have a dedicated power amplifier for each driver
and the power amplification is optimized for each driver unit individually,
resulting in a balanced design with no wasted amplifier power. In Genelec’s
designs the dedicated amplifiers, power supply, crossover filter electronics,
protection circuits and drivers are all integrated inside the loudspeaker enclosure,
saving both energy and materials.
Harri Koskinen. Internationally renowned Finnish industrial designer Harri
HARRI KOSKINEN
The cooperation with renowned Finnish industrial
designer Harri Koskinen began in 2000 when the
floor-standing 6040A active speaker, designed by
Koskinen, was launched at the Miyake Design Studio
Gallery in Tokyo. The collaboration between
Genelec and designer Harri Koskinen has flourished
ever since.
Koskinen is currently one of the most successful and internationally renowned
Finnish contemporary designers, having created an extensive and
consistent oeuvre which is original and recognizable. Functionality, versatility,
noble materials and aesthetics are rooted in his designs, leading to timeless
products with classical beauty.
Koskinen usually incorporates existing techniques and materials but at the
same time always attempts to go one step further. He prefers to retain the
essence of simplicity in his designs, allowing him to extract the strongest
and most essential qualities of a product.
Koskinen’s art uniquely represents the Finnish heritage of art and craft through
the functionalist movement until today. His Nordic functional and minimalistic
design approach helps to support, by nature, our sustainable development.
The spirit of Finnish culture – which includes aspects such as authenticity,
integrity, the essence of simplicity, justice and equality – is present in all of his
designs, which strive to innovate in order to make the world a better place.
In the last 15 years, Harri Koskinen’s industrial design art has become an essential
part of our company and products’ identity. Using Koskinen’s design
and vision has changed forever our corporate image forever, by bringing a
unique voice to the aesthetic of our products.
THE SOUTH AFRICAN ARTIST’S LARGEST
ASIAN EXHIBITION UTILISED AN ARRAY OF
GENELEC SPEAKERS, WHICH PROVIDED
OUTSTANDING REPRODUCTION IN A
CHALLENGING ACOUSTIC ENVIRONMENT.
William Kentridge is South Africa’s most
famous living artist, having produced an
outstanding body of contemporary work
across drawing, print, animation and
sculptural mediums, as well as live performance
pieces. At the Ullens Center for
Contemporary Art (UCCA), 798 Art District,
Beijing, ‘William Kentridge: Notes
Towards a Model Opera’ provided a
comprehensive retrospective view of his
work from 1988 to the present. The exhibition
harnessed the clarity of a plethora
of Genelec loudspeakers – including
the 8030, 8330, 4030, G Three, 8040,
8050, 1038CF and 1238CF – allowing
Kentridge’s complex, multifaceted works
to be fully realised.
The use of sound and its unique properties has become increasingly important
in today’s contemporary art installations. Kentridge’s works creatively
de-structure and restructure various sound elements, which are fused
with many different images and installations to generate meaningful artistic
statements. In this exhibition, faithful, comprehensive and nuanced sound
reproduction was one of the keys to fully convey the messages that the artist
wanted to present.
The exhibition layout was designed by set designer Sabine Theunissen,
Kentridge’s long-term co-operator. The core of the exhibition centred around
its titular piece ‘Notes Towards a Model Opera’, a three-channel projection
rooted in extensive research into the intellectual, political, and social history
of modern China. It utilised four Genelec 4030 speakers, forming crystal
clear quadraphonic sound.
14
The works on show spanned a wide variety of artistic mediums: two-dimensional
artworks in Indian ink, charcoal, linocut, and silkscreen print on paper;
audio multi-screen images and hand-painted animation; and a large-scale
installation in the form of a stage model in combination with audio-visual multimedia.
Kentridge chose Genelec to provide sound for all of his works, with a
total of 30 speakers used across the exhibition. According to Feng Hanying,
National Director of Genelec China, faithful and delicate reproduction of each
work was of utmost importance, as was minimising interference between
one another in the large hall. The loudspeakers were implemented both to
support the large-scale installations as well as match the design style of the
entire art space. In addition, the loudspeakers needed to run continuously
and stably for 3 months – posing a serious test of the product’s reliability and
durability. Genelec loudspeakers lived up to these expectations, handling the
challenging requirements with ease, and subtly blending in to the art space.
Ms Qu Lu, Marketing and Communication Manager of Genelec China, said
that the project had faced many challenges in terms of construction and
installation. The exhibition hall itself was reflective, and the acoustic environment
of each space was different, posing audio issues. However, as each
Genelec loudspeaker could be precisely calibrated using the DIP switches,
THE LOUDSPEAKERS WERE
IMPLEMENTED BOTH TO SUPPORT
the system was able to be tailored to the unique listening environments by
compensating for detrimental room influences. Thanks to Genelec’s Directivity
Control Waveguide (DCW) technology, sound coverage both on and
off axis was excellent. With the concerted efforts of the UCCA and Genelec
teams, the 30 Genelec loudspeakers delivered audio success, meeting the
approval of the artist.
Genelec’s reputation in producing professional quality, crystal-clear speakers
has helped to establish itself as a popular choice in the presentation of artistic
works. Many Genelec products, such as the M Series, G Series, F series and
the 8351, feature industrial designs by Harri Koskinen, a world renowned
industrial designer, combining professional sound quality and timeless Scandinavian
design.
BRONDA
RESTAURANT
HELSINKI, FINLAND
18
19
BRONDA IS A BRASSERIE-STYLE RESTAURANT
RECENTLY OPENED BY BW RESTAURANTS IN
HELSINKI. IT IS THE FIFTH AND LATEST ADDITION TO
THE PRESTIGIOUS LINE OF RESTAURANTS OWNED
BY MATTI WIKBERG AND TOMI BJÖRCK AND
JOINS THEIR FAMOUS FARANG RESTAURANTS
IN STOCKHOLM AND HELSINKI, AND GAIJIN AND
BOULEVARD SOCIAL.
Matti Wikberg says that the idea for this restaurant had been growing in
their minds for a long time and it was just a matter of finding the right
location. The restaurant is located at Eteläesplanadi 20, a historical and
protected building with large glass walls and many different ceiling heights,
some reaching up to seven metres. To acquire the space, which is owned
by Dutch property investment company CBRE, BW Restaurants entered
a bidding contest alongside five other companies and were chosen as the
ideal tenant for the space.
The major design challenge of the entire project was the kitchen with the low
ceiling height. The basis for the interior design of the space was to respect
the classic look and feel it has while making the most of the height and glass
walls which reach all the way to the ceiling and bring the street life in, and
the restaurant life outside. The interior designer was the same as for Farang,
Matti’s brother Risto of Futu Design.
Audio is an important feature in restaurants and Matti says they wanted to
see how an active system would work in Bronda. The brand choice for the
audio system was obvious: “As we wanted to have a Finnish brand and the
best available in the market, we didn’t really have to think twice about going
for Genelec.”
Matti also confesses to being a Genelec fan in his private life, too, with 5.1
system installed at his home and he continues: “I am very pleased that we
got to work on this project with Genelec.”
20
THE QUALITY OF SOUND NEEDS
TO REMAIN CONSTANT IN THE
DIFFERENT SPACES ON DIFFERENT
VOLUME LEVELS.
The space itself seems somewhat challenging for audio, but with separate
systems for different spaces in the restaurant, the end result works well: the
quality of sound needs to remain constant in the different spaces on different
volume levels. As you can imagine, a seven meter high dining hall, cocktail
bar, the cabinets and the terrace outside all require slightly different things
from audio and Genelec offered products to match this exibility requirement
perfectly. The different areas of the restaurant are flexible, too: the cabinets
can be shared to three smaller areas or used as one large space, which
seats up to 60 people.
A Crestron control system for the project was designed by Presson Oy of
Espoo, and audio processing, correction filters and bass management were
achieved using Symetrix Radius processors. Bronda offers a French, Italian,
and Spanish-influenced menu, or just cocktails at the bar – always combined
with excellent sound re-production with Genelec.
REPRODUCTION IN THE SPACIOUS
LISTENING ENVIRONMENT.
Surrounded by sparkling coastline and lush green
forestry, the striking Artipelag Art Institution is one of
the largest art galleries in the Stockholm area, having
been founded by owner Björn Jakobson, creator of
the world-famous ”BabyBjörn” baby products company.
Dressed in bevelled pitched-pine planks, and
carefully located between the pine trees and the cliffs
with a view over Baggen’s Bay, the exhibition hall is
in perfect harmony with its beautiful surroundings.
As part of a much-needed audio installation project,
the in-house team at the gallery was tasked with
filling a selection of spacious expanses with clear,
neutral sound in accompaniment to the displays.
26
Inside its 32,000 square feet, Artipelag includes a
vast exhibition room of about 11,000 square feet,
along with four additional exhibition rooms, each designed
with distinctive architectural features. Since
audio was not a part of the initial art institution construction,
the need for a robust retrofit sound system
was crucial. Genelec was chosen as the number
one partner due to its large portfolio of products and
great reputation when it comes to superior audio
quality, reliability and great selection of accessories.
With a large amount of hard surfaces reflecting audio,
the project was not without its challenges. A
small portfolio of Genelec products, including the
8020, 8030, 8040 and 8050, was installed throughout
the art hall, and in the artist space area.
In the latest exhibition – “The Monochrome Symphony” – audio forms a key
component of the experience. Comprising single-coloured constellations of
art, design, fashion and music, Genelec technology is fully utilized as part
of the exhibition, playing tailor-made playlists via Spotify. This provides a
more intense and immersive experience for visitors as they walk from room
to room.
Chief Technical advisor at Artipelag, Johan Von Geijer says, “Genelec was
our first choice, since we needed to place speakers in somewhat difficult
places and challenging areas where we needed a great bass response from
a rather small cabinet. We also have some Genelec speakers hidden under
a dropped ceiling. This works flawlessly due to its great bass response and
great audio quality, even off axis.”
28
A total of 10 Genelec 8020 speakers were fitted in the project. The Genelec
8020 speaker provides outstanding technical performance in a small physical
footprint, making it an ideal choice for installations where space is at a premium
or when a more modest appearance is desired so as not to overshadow
the environment. The all-aluminium Minimum Diffraction Enclosure (MDE)
and advanced Directivity Control Waveguide (DCW) technologies are carefully
matched with state-of-the art electronics and transducers design. The
8020 also features Genelec Intelligent Signal Sensing (ISS) circuitry which
switches the monitor to standby when no audio input is detected.
Providing additional functionality to the audio setup at the gallery is Genelec’s
8050 monitors, which offer high SPL over a very wide frequency response.
These are used for reference at live music and speech performances at the
gallery, such as release parties. Genelec’s DCW technology ensures wider
usable listening area throughout the gallery, providing a at response both
on- and off-axis. This ensures a clear listening experience for guests in spite
of less-than-ideal speaker placement. The in-house team also appreciated
the ease of installation and flexible mounting options of the speakers, which
will come in useful as the gallery constantly shifts in its layout.
CELEBRITY CHEF FREDRIK ERIKSSON
UPDATES THE AUDIO SYSTEM AT HIS
STUNNING RESTAURANT WITH THE
INTEGRATOR-FRIENDLY 4000 SERIES
FROM GENELEC.
Långbro Värdshus is a top restaurant
located just outside of Stockholm. Situated
in an architectural and historically
significant villa, it is run by the renowned
Swedish TV chef and author Fredrik
Eriksson, and rightly praised for its excellent
regional cuisine. In line with its quest
for excellence, the restaurant recently
upgraded its audio system and Inexo, a
local custom installer, chose Genelec’s
4000 Series loudspeakers for their clarity
of sound and ease of installation for the
new system.
The Villa has an interesting history, and
has, in its time been a mental health facility
and played host to one of the notorious
figures in 20th century history! The building has a traditional interior
which has now been completely renovated. Fredrik has been running Långbro
Värdshus since 2005 and is an award-winning chef and restaurateur,
he is an important ambassador both for Sweden and Swedish food and is
primarily known for being a celebrity TV chef and the author of several books.
The new interior design features a quiet and understated aesthetic that focuses
on natural materials and traditional craftsmanship. Modern technology
also has its place in the restaurant and as part of the refurbishment it was
decided that the outdated, big and bulky, audio system separates would be
replaced with something sleek and contemporary. Magnus Koff, the owner
of Inexo has designed a system that has streamlined the audio hardware
and improved the sound quality and functionality immeasurably.
“The restaurant interior is understated and stylish and the old audio system
just didn’t fit in with that look,” says Magnus. “The old amplifiers and
mixers sat on the bar counter, and not only big and awkward looking they
didn’t sound great either. Our first job was to get rid of those and the new
system, which features the Genelec 4000 Series loudspeakers, is immeasurably
better sounding and integrates beautifully into the refined interior of
the restaurant.
The new audio system in the restaurant inside Långbro has four separate
audio zones which are individually controlled by a Dbx ZonePro. The Zone-
Pro comes complete with both wired volume adjustment and SourceSelect
panels behind the bar. The music content is sourced and through an iPad
which makes selecting and changing the various playlists for different meal
services, simple and easy for the staff. The Genelec 4000 Series was chosen
for its the excellent performance that is achievable from a monitor with
such a compact size. The speakers are also fitted with a set of dip switches
that Inexo were able to use to compensate for room environment effects
on audio quality.
“With the dip switch calibration options we were able to align, the room,
speaker and listener in perfect harmony”, adds Magnus. “Each zone is different
in the restaurant but we were able to minimise any coloration effects
from the restaurant environment. The end result sounds superb and Fredrik
and his staff are more than delighted with the results.”
The 4000 speakers also help to boost the restaurant’s green energy credentials
with the integrated Intelligent Signal Sensing (ISS) Autostart
function. This feature places the amplifier in standby mode if an input signal
has not been detected for approximately one hour. The power consumption
is thereby reduced to typically less than 0.5 watts, and playback will automatically
resume once an input signal is detected from the source.
Furthermore, with the 4000 Series there are a range of speaker mounting
accessories which were extremely useful during the installation process.
With both swivel and tilt options the mounts allow the audio output to be
pointed in the desired direction for best results. Furthermore, as the 4000
Series are active speakers with integrated amplifier, no additional external
amplifier is needed which reduces bulk, which is essential in environments
where space is at a premium.
THE RIFF
BAR
HELSINKI, FINLAND
36
37
HELSINKI IS WELL KNOWN FOR ITS
EXCELLENT NIGHTLIFE AND VIBRANT
AND EXCITING ROCK BAR SCENE. ONE OF
THE NEWEST TO BARS TO OPEN IN THE
CITY IS THE RIFF. NOT ONLY IS THE RIFF A
GREAT VENUE WITH A PERFECT CENTRAL
LOCATION, BUT IT IS ALSO CO-OWNED BY
JUSSI 69, A MEMBER OF THE 69 EYES, ONE
OF FINLAND’S BEST KNOWN ROCK BANDS.
With such an illustrious name at the helm and the music offering being
such a key attraction for the venue, special consideration was given to the
choice of audio system, especially the type of loudspeaker required. Jussi
69 recognised that the venue’s success would hinge on this choice and
his team chose the Genelec 4000 Series as the loudspeaker with the right
combination of performance and looks for the venue.
The Riff is in central Helsinki at Iso Roba 3 and has been designed as the
perfect after party venue, as well as a fresh space for the rock-loving Helsinki
crowd to hang out during the day and evening. The Jussi 69’s partners in
the venture are Veikka Moilanen and Oskari Kovalainen, two familiar faces
from the Helsinki bar scene. Already a radio host Jussi 69 is excited about
branching out into bar ownership: “I have toured excessively and visited rock
clubs from Osaka to Texas and back,” he says.
“This experience means I know what makes a rock bar work. Owning this
bar has been my longtime dream, and I planned this for quite some time
with my colleagues, Veikka and Oskari. We found the perfect location in the
heart of Helsinki where you can hear the best sounds in the city, played loud
and clear through Genelec speakers.”
Music and sound systems are integral to the success of a rock bar and the
owners did their homework on the available solutions. Consideration was
given to the role the music system would have to play in the life of the venue.
The system would need to provide background music during the day for a
more relaxed vibe, and then during the evening crank things up for the busy
night-times when the bar would be more crowded with punters. This would
mean higher volumes at busy times but the owners did not want to lose
any sound clarity at the higher volumes. The Genelec solution stood out, as
Oskari Kovalainen, one of the co-owners of the bar relates:
“As a management team we’ve all had experience of visiting and enjoying
a wide variety of rock bars. For obvious reasons music plays a great part
in the offering of this type of bar. One of the drawbacks with many of these
places is at times the punters like the music loud and sometimes this increase
in volume comes at the sacrifice of sound reproduction quality. We
definitely didn’t want to go down that route. With the Genelec system we
have a system that is crystal clear at all sound levels, whether chilling out
during the daytime, or cutting through the noisy evening crowd. This means
we have managed to attract a mature, discerning, and loyal customer base
that appreciates good music in great surroundings.
The Riff interior is decorated with memorabilia from Jussi 69’s long rock
music career with many guitars, posters and other items displayed on the
walls. There is also a VIP room, the Hate Lounge which is regularly used by 39

FANTASTIC AUDIO QUALITY DURING
THE DAY AND FROM DUSK TILL DAWN.
many bands gigging in the city, not least, the legendary Children of Bodom
who are regulars at the bar.
The audio system in the Riff has two separate audio zones, one for the main
bar and another for the Hate Lounge, both of which are individually controlled
from a DJ mixing desk, with sources including CDs and a Mood Media
system located behind the bar. Genelec 4040 speakers in black to match
the décor, are installed throughout the main bar, with a pair also installed in
the Hate Lounge. The integral set of dip switched on each speaker speakers
were used to compensate for any room environment effects on audio
quality. The finished system blends perfectly into the rock bar environment
while ensuring fantastic audio quality during the day and from dusk till dawn.
The 4000 Series features a range of speaker mounting accessories which
were extremely useful during the installation process. With both swivel and
tilt options the mounts have allowed the audio output to be pointed in the
desired direction for best results. Furthermore, as the 4000 Series are active
speakers with integrated amplifier, no additional external amplifier was
needed which helped to integrate the system into the bar environment where
space is at a premium.
GATORADE
CENTER
SPORTS ARENA
TURKU, FINLAND
43
FOUNDED IN 1922, HC TPS IS ONE OF THE FINEST
SPORTS CLUBS IN FINLAND. BASED IN TURKU,
THE OLDEST CITY IN FINLAND AND THE COUNTRY’S
GATEWAY TO EUROPE, THE TEAM HAS WON THE
FINNISH ICE HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP 11 TIMES SINCE
1956, AND IS THE MOST SUCCESSFUL TEAM SINCE
THE FOUNDING OF THE SM-LIIGA IN 1975.
With such home-grown hockey talents including Olympic greats and NHL
all-stars Miikka Kiprusoff, Saku Koivu and Mikko Koivu, the club’s history is
steeped in excellence. At the team’s home in the 11,820 capacity Gatorade
Center, the organisation hoped to complement its current roster of talented
ice hockey stars with an equally gifted home-grown audio setup.
The Gatorade Center initially received the Genelec treatment in 2015, becoming
the first ice arena in Finland to utilise them. Integrator HifiStudio
installed 12 Genelec 4040A and 4 Genelec 4030A loudspeakers in the sports
bar and in the players’ locker room areas. Having received the seal of approval
from the players, the performance of the speakers delivered above
all expectations.
“We were very impressed by the sound,” says Mika Eskola, CEO of HC TPS
Turku says. “During the week, you could hear what the players were playing
in the locker rooms from all over what is a large arena. It’s amazing that you
can get so much power and clarity from such compact loudspeakers. We
want the best for this organisation, and to do that you need to work with
the best in the business, and that is what we did with Genelec. We were so
happy with them that we decided to get some more Genelec speakers for
the rest of the arena.”
44
HifiStudio came back a year later to install 25 4030A speakers in restaurant
and seating areas around the arena, which are used during ice hockey
matches as well as at concerts and other events. Integrator Antti Vuorilahti
at HifiStudio says “The customer wanted to have a setup with great brand
image and sustainable products from Finland. We wanted to provide the
best possible solution with the given requirements, which is why we went
for Genelec. Genelec is one of our most important brands and partners with
HifiStudio. The products are sustainable, good looking and sounding, and
the brand is very well known in Finland. The setup is made for ease to use,
so all of the users can enjoy it. The sound is suitable for both loud and quiet
listening so it is convenient for all different kinds of events.”

THE TEAM’S FAMOUS BLACK
AND WHITE COLOURS HAVE
ALSO BEEN TRANSFERRED
TO THE GENELEC SPEAKERS.
The team’s famous black and white colours have also been transferred to the
Genelec speakers, with a customised two-tone speaker design to match the
jersey and logo synonymous with TPS – a clever idea from Antti at HifiStudio.
He adds “The Genelec factory was more than happy to produce these for
our customer. This project and the colouring are quite unique, so this is a
win-win situation for everyone.”
The speakers have been used extensively in a variety of different scenarios,
delivering excellent sound quality. Mika Eskola at HC TPS Turku adds “All
kinds of music gets played on them – we often hear the players playing heavy
rock music and rap, but also much quieter music is sometimes played on the
speakers, in the restaurants for example. They have always sounded great,
with anything from Rammstein to soft piano music. It’s brilliant that they can
handle that variety with no problems.”
The Genelec 4030 and 4040 are compact and powerful two-way active
loudspeakers designed for indoor commercial and professional installations.
All models contain an integrated amplification unit comprising an active electronic
crossover, overload protection circuitry and two power amplifiers, one
for each driver.
EM SHERIF IS A DISTINGUISHED
FINE-DINING ORIENTAL RESTAURANT
THAT OFFERS UNIQUE, AUTHENTIC
LEBANESE CUISINE. THE RESTAURANT
AIMS TO BRING BACK FORGOTTEN
TRADITIONAL FLAVOURS AND PROVIDE
ITS GUESTS WITH AN UNSURPASSED
FIRST CLASS DINING EXPERIENCE.
The restaurant aims to bring back forgotten traditional flavours and provide
its guests with an unsurpassed first class dining experience. The latest Em
Sherif restaurant opened in downtown Dubai – overlooking the Burj Khalifa
– and acoustics consultancy firm 21dB was tasked with installing a sound
system that was able to provide an optimum audio experience for both live
and recorded music in the opulent dining space. The company chose Genelec
speakers as part of an intricate audio solution befitting of the restaurant’s
sensory splendour.
The spacious indoor expanse, high ceiling, and large glass façade were
considerable obstacles to designing an effective sound system which had to
be smartly integrated to provide high-quality music and an optimum acoustic
experience. The client also required a clean aesthetic so as not to detract
from the luxurious décor which was designed to resemble an antique oriental
mansion. In order to achieve this, the subwoofers needed to be hidden
from sight completely, and the visible speakers needed to blend in with the
background as much as possible.
In order to tackle the challenging acoustic environment, 21dB specified a
seamless porous sound absorber to be installed across some parts of the
ceiling in order to reduce the reverberation times, which could not have been
achieved with just soft furnishings and curtains alone. The ceiling is ornately
decorated with attractive cornices and gold leaf decoration, so special considerations
had to be made to ensure that the absorber did not hinder the
attractive aesthetic.
54
VISIBLE SPEAKERS NEEDED TO
BLEND IN WITH THE BACKGROUND
AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.
55
56
57
A Genelec system was chosen from distributor Eltek, and a total of 19
Genelec 4040A installation loudspeakers were ordered in white and painted
by an artist in a shaded light blue finish to blend into the restaurant’s décor.
The seven Genelec 7070a subwoofers were either hidden in custom made
perforated boxes or recessed into the floor with a steel grille on top, which
was made possible thanks to the floor thickness.
“We have used Genelec speakers many times before, and we have always
been impressed with their performance, and often received excellent feedback”,
says Fouad Bechwati, Principal of 21dB.
“WE HAVE USED GENELEC SPEAKERS
MANY TIMES BEFORE, AND WE HAVE
ALWAYS BEEN IMPRESSED WITH
THEIR PERFORMANCE, AND OFTEN
RECEIVED EXCELLENT FEEDBACK.”
58
“WE FELT THAT THE COMBINATION
OF THE ACOUSTIC TREATMENT AND
THE GENELEC SPEAKERS WOULD
DELIVER THE BEST POSSIBLE
SOLUTION FOR THE CLIENT.”
“As acoustic consultants for the project, we felt that the combination of
the acoustic treatment and the Genelec speakers would deliver the best
possible solution for the client. Another consideration was the fact that the
restaurant usually has a live band playing every few days. With Genelec being
used extensively in music studios as a result of their fantastic reproduction,
we knew their qualities for this application, and felt that they were the best
choice for the job.”
Having dramatically improved the acoustic environment, the Genelec speakers
provide a crisp and clean sound which can be played at any level whilst
still maintaining the same level of definition in the music. Whenever live bands
perform – usually traditional Arabic music – the sound from the speakers is
natural and precise, delivering the best possible experience to diners. The
sound system is a perfect accompaniment to the restaurant’s stunning food,
service and ambience, and it helps the luxurious Em Sherif to distinguish
itself as ‘A Landmark in Authentic Oriental Cuisine’.
THE MUSEUM OF SPIRITS IS A VENUE
THAT IS DEDICATED TO SWEDEN’S
RELATIONSHIP WITH ALCOHOL, HOUSED
IN TWO 18TH CENTURY NAVAL BUILDINGS.
The museum covers the history, manufacture and consumption of all kinds
of alcoholic drinks, traditions, drinking songs, food and every other kind of
drink-related experience. To maximise authenticity, there is also the opportunity
to sample various liquors during your visit. Multimedia displays and a
custom-created audio soundtrack play an important role in the experience.
To enhance the quality of the audio system the venue has recently benefited
from a new installation of Genelec 4000 Series loudspeakers.
The Museum of Spirits is located on the island of Djurgården in central
Stockholm and the exhibits focus on the Swedish people’s ‘bittersweet’
relationship with alcohol. The museum takes the visitor on an unforgettable
journey from pain to pleasure, from park bench to cocktail party, based on
art, scenery, experience, scents, and tastes. Visitors are able to relax on a
park bench, hang in the bar and partake in the pain and pleasure, enjoyment,
hangovers, light and dark, warmth and cold – all a familiar part of the
experience of alcohol. Since 2008 the museum has also been home to the
Absolut Art Collection, which consists of 850 works of art created by 550
artists, between the years 1986 and 2004.
Since the idea of the museum is to affect the visitor in a totally immersive
way, the audio must be equally clear and precise at both high and low
volume levels. Transpond, a Swedish production company specialising in
museums and other spaces, worked closely with the museum on making
the creative ideas a reality. The client was looking for a versatile audio system
that could easily integrate with the museum environment and various
exhibits. Key considerations were budget, so value for money was important,
and maintenance considerations.
“Various solutions were considered, including passive system solutions, but
Genelec was considered the best value for money and, all things considered,
ended up being cheaper in comparison to alternatives,” says Pontus
Jönsson, system integrator at Transpond.
One thing that made Genelec stand apart was the ability for the loudspeakers
to run continuously and stably for long periods of time – an essential requirement
for a popular visitor attraction with long opening hours. The system
also stood up to the challenge of the integrating a new audio system into a
traditional building. In this respect, Genelec’s wide range of accessories was
very useful, especially for optimum mounting and positioning of the speakers
on the buildings’ structural wooden beams.
Other areas also benefited from the Genelec loudspeakers including the
venue reception and public restaurant. The complete system is controlled
with an e:cue iPad interface making it simple and intuitive to use. e:cue
software also simplified the programming of scenes, control sequences and
system configuration. Media output and playback is via BrightSign network
media players.
AFTER AN EXTENSIVE SIX-MONTH
RENOVATION PROCESS, RICO OPENED
ITS DOORS EARLIER THIS YEAR TO AN
OVERWHELMINGLY POSITIVE RECEPTION.
Diners have relished the Linköping restaurant’s attractive
décor, relaxed ambience and fresh produce,
with a keen focus on locally sourced meats. A host of
Genelec 4020s, 4030s and 4040s have been installed
across the premises, which deliver audio clarity to
accompany the restaurant’s delicious food and stylish
surroundings.
With sound playing a key role in creating an inviting
restaurant atmosphere, it was important to establish an
environment at just the right audio levels; low enough
so that it did not disturb conversations, while still
keeping the environment lively and energised. Stockholm-based
system integrator Watt & Volt took care
of the audio installation and sales. Opting for Genelec
loudspeakers, Carl Ingler of Watt and Volt said:
“We were looking for a solution which delivered high
quality sound with good looks, low maintenance and
high reliability. This was of particular importance in this
install, because the speakers are used for large parts
of the day, on every day of the week. We’ve been
delighted with the performance of the 4000 series,
which deliver great range across the restaurant at low,
medium and high levels.”
“WE WERE LOOKING FOR A
76
Spacious dining areas can often prove to
be tricky acoustic environments, and it can
be difficult to ensure an even distribution
of sound. In order to combat this, the firm
specified a generous quantity of speakers
so that they could be run at low volume
during lunch and dinner time. This has
led to significantly improved sound, with
wider dispersion. As an additional benefit,
the larger number of speakers has
also meant that when playing at high volume,
noise pollution was also reduced to
Rico’s neighbours. DIP switches were also
used to make precise local adjustments
throughout the restaurant without having
to add more DSP power. All of the staff have been delighted with the overall
sound quality, being particularly impressed with how much bass the system
can handle, with no additional subwoofers installed.
active loudspeakers designed for indoor commercial and professional installations.
A POWERFUL BLEND OF GENELEC
AUDIO PERFORMANCE AT A LEADING
MARTIAL ARTS GYM IN SWEDEN.
The SPR Athlete Factory is a premium gym which specialises in martial arts
such as Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai and MMA in Södermalm, the heart of
upmarket Stockholm. Founder Waldo Zapata is vastly experienced in these
explosive disciplines, having worked professionally with martial arts and functional
training for the last 20 years, as well as being a BJJ black belt and
accomplished pro MMA coach. The stylish premium gym has been fitted
with an array of Genelec products, providing crystal-clear audio throughout
its expansive space.
“Our primary objective was to ensure a consistently good audio performance
throughout the building,” says Morgan Askeholt, integrator at MA
Ljud&Bild. “As is often the case with any retrofit, the positioning of some of
the speakers was not perhaps as we would’ve liked. We chose Genelec,
as with its Directivity Control Waveguide technology we were able to deliver
a at frequency response, to ensure that sound was excellent both on- and
off-axis. This gave us the consistency that we were striving for, which is vital
for a space such as the SPR Athlete Factory. As with any gymnasium, the
acoustic environment is a challenging one, and this was further exacerbated
by a large amount of hard, reflective surfaces, including stone. Thankfully,
with the Genelec products we carefully selected, we were able to overcome
these challenges, and provide an outcome that client and customers are
delighted with.”
More than 12 ‘zones’ have been set up on the premises, facilitated via Sonos
CONNECT players. Mono summing adapters were used with every Sonos
player in order to provide a mono signal to all Genelec speakers. As the
Sonos CONNECT does not have a designated subwoofer out, Genelec’s
subwoofer bass management was able to solve this acoustic challenge.
The end result meant that music was able to be easily streamed and played
in different zones throughout the entire Genelec speaker setup, providing
outstanding audio clarity and precision.
In the gym area, Genelec 4040A active loudspeakers were installed. Thanks
to the ample bass provided by the loudspeakers, there was no need to install
additional subwoofers, saving space and ensuring a more streamlined setup.
The phoenix-type connectors made installation straightforward, allowing
them to be daisy-chained together.
In the juice/coffee bar, Genelec 4020B speakers were installed, supported
by a 7040A subwoofer. The compact 4020B active loudspeaker shares the
same design with the Genelec 8000 Series monitors, with its controlled directivity
simplifying installation in many types of acoustic environments. The
coffee served in the bar even matches Genelec’s own development and environmental
values, being sourced from a sustainable, eco-friendly Brazilian
farm, and then roasted and delivered by local firm Kersh Coffee Roastery.
“For the juice and coffee bar area, we decided that active speakers were the
ideal choice,” adds Morgan. “We found that they were able to provide more
than sufficient power within the space limitations, with no need for an additional
amplifier. The 4020Bs are perfectly complemented by the subwoofer,
which provides high output in a small footprint, and is ideal for the space.”
The compact and stylish Genelec 4020B active loudspeaker shares the
same superior design with the Genelec 8000 Series monitors. Its controlled
directivity allows the system to be easily installed in many types of acoustic
DESIGNED BY ARCHITECT AXEL F NYSTROM,
GAMLA RIKSARKIVET WAS THE SWEDISH
DOCUMENTS OF GREAT HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE.
ONCE THE TALLEST BUILDING IN STOCKHOLM, THE
PREMISES IS NOW RUN BY STUREPLANSGRUPPEN
– SWEDEN’S LARGEST ENTERTAINMENT GROUP.
Located in Riddarholmen, the Brick Romanesque structure is a unique example
of a late 1800s institution building, and one of the few remaining in
Europe. Now repurposed to offer tours as well as an array of party, event
and conference spaces, Gamla Riksarkivet lives on after its official closure
as an archive in 1968.
Originally without electricity, the building incorporated vast windows into its
design in order to allow natural light to flood in during the day. Such was
its importance, the building was built on a base of cast iron to increase fire
safety, with cast-iron column supports, iron bookshelves, steel doors and
sandstone frames and sills. With this plethora of harsh reflective surfaces
creating a tough audio environment, the client sought a great-sounding retrofit
installation with a small, unobtrusive footprint so as not to detract from
the building’s striking interior. Integrator Jouni Niemi of 08audio was handed
the challenging task of delivering an audio installation, who chose Genelec’s
4000 series as part of the solution.
“This fantastic building initially presented numerous acoustic issues to us”,
says Jouni. “As with any old building, we were restricted with our ability to
place speakers optimally. With so many hard surfaces, this further compounded
the challenge of ensuring consistently clean and neutral sound
throughout the install. With the installed Genelec 4030Bs, we were able to
use Low Cut on DIP switches instead of using Equalization external processing,
allowing us to achieve a flat and consistent frequency response in each
speaker, without additional equipment.”
of the installation. Thanks to the powerful bass response of the Genelec
speakers, there was no need for any subwoofers in most areas, ensuring a
more subtle installation with a reduced footprint, as well as saving on outlay
for additional subwoofers. Volumes are able to be set individually in each
speaker’s locality thanks to the volume control function on the back of the
speakers. As a result of this, the client is able to decide in which areas the
speakers should play louder, providing an additional layer of customisation.
Audio transport and control is handled by a BiAmp Nexia DSP system. The
internal system design is completely user definable via PC software, and
can be controlled via dedicated software screens, RS-232 control systems,
as well as with a variety of optional remote control devices including an iOS
App. Each room has its own simple, intuitive interface for the staff and can be
installed and configured to meet the unique needs of a particular application.
The device connects via standard CAT-5/6/7 cabling and is powered over
Ethernet. Power for the Genelec speakers was taken from the three-circuit
lighting track system in every room. Genelec’s accessories were able to fit
in the most challenging situations presented by the building’s conservation
areas, which helped to saved time, effort and ultimately money spent on the
installation. The overall outcome is an unobtrusive audio solution fit for the
building’s rich cultural heritage – delivering precise, crystal-clear sound to
be enjoyed for generations to come.
SANOMA IS THE LEADING CONSUMER
MEDIA COMPANY IN FINLAND AND THE
NETHERLANDS. THROUGH A BROAD
RANGE OF SERVICES ACROSS A RANGE
OF MEDIA PLATFORMS WHICH INCLUDE
ONLINE, PRINT, RADIO AND TELEVISION,
THE COMPANY SERVES MULTIPLE
CHANNELS IN THE ENTERTAINMENT
AND LEARNING SECTORS.
Based in Helsinki, the company has recently acquired a new building in the
city. The new location brings together separate parts of the business into
one state-of-the-art location. The project involved a substantial refurbishment
and complete refit of all fixtures and fittings, as well as a new interior design
scheme. There is also a new audio visual system in key areas of the building
featuring Genelec 4000 Series loudspeakers.
The history of the Sanoma business goes back to the birth of the Päivälehti
newspaper in 1899 and includes many landmarks in its history including
the more recent acquisition of SBS Broadcasting in 2011. In Finland, the
company has undergone a transformation in its operations and the new
headquarters is a reflection of the new direction in which the business is
heading. With communication in its widest sense being an important part of
the business, the company wanted to make sure that its new audio visual
92
installation fitted in with its needs both now and in the future. The fast-growing
Helsinki- based systems integration company, 4Business was chosen to
transform this vision into reality.
4Business has a background in custom installation in the residential sector
and has now grown its expertise into the commercial sector. This broad
range of integration and project management experience was invaluable
when taking on the Sanoma project, as Tuomas Immonen, Head of Sales
and Marketing at 4Business relates: “We were really excited to take on the
Sanoma project but at the same time, we were also aware that there would
be some substantial project management challenges involved. The company
was relocating from two buildings into this one new property and we were
working to a tight timescale. This meant we had to make sure that everything
went smoothly because as soon as the workforce moved in the audio visual
system would need to be up and running without delay.”
THE COMPANY WANTED TO
MAKE SURE THAT ITS NEW AUDIO
VISUAL INSTALLATION FITTED IN
WITH ITS NEEDS BOTH NOW
AND IN THE FUTURE.
93
The first task of the installation was to get in all the cabling into the seventy
rooms which included a mixture of conference and meeting rooms. 4Business
also installed ‘Through-Desk’ mounted AV connection boxes which
were flush mounted into table tops to provide discreet, out-of-the-way storage.
There are ports for a wide range of AV inputs and outputs as well as
retractable cables for connecting a wide range of devices. The larger meeting
rooms have been designed as large presentation spaces and there are
smaller rooms for video conferencing and other collaborative work tasks.
Genelec loudspeakers are installed in seventy rooms throughout the building.
This includes the open plan reception area which features a pair of Genelec
4030B loudspeakers to complement the large format display that provides
rolling news and company content for visitors and staff. The area was also
used for the cocktail party held to celebrate the opening of the building.
Pairs of Genelec 4030Bs are also used in the larger conference spaces
alongside at panels displays. 4030B is an extremely compact two way active
loudspeaker designed for fixed installations. As an active loudspeaker, it contains
drivers, power amplifiers, active crossover filters and protection circuitry.
“WE HAVE BEEN REALLY PLEASED
WITH THE PERFORMANCE OF
THE 4030BS IN THE LARGER
PRESENTATION ROOMS.”
94
The MDE (Minimum Diffraction Enclosure) loudspeaker enclosure is made
of die-cast aluminium and shaped to reduce edge diffraction. Combined with
the advanced Directivity Control Waveguide the design provides excellent
frequency balance whatever the environment. Each 4030B is supplied with
an integrated amplifier unit, mains cable, a 5-pin euroblock connector for
audio signal, plus a range of mounting solutions for maximum versatility.
“We have been really pleased with the performance of the 4030Bs in the
larger presentation rooms”, says Tuomas Immonen. “The sound quality is
perfect for the corporate environment and even at high volumes the clarity is
maintained. In the smaller rooms, the compact 4020Bs have also performed
extremely well and the client is delighted with the results.”
In some of the smaller video conferencing rooms the 4020Bs are mounted
in pairs either side of the display on specially designed, custom mounts. The
4020B designed for this type of challenging installation, especially where
space is compromised. The compact and stylish Genelec 4020B active
loudspeaker shares the same superior design as the Genelec 8000 Series
monitors. Its controlled directivity allows it to be easily installed in all types
of acoustic environment.
The finished installation demonstrates what can be achieved when companies
at the forefront of their respective fields come together on a project.
A trio of schools have upgraded their sound with the help of Genelec’s 4000
series loudspeakers. More than 200 Genelec 4010 and 4030 loudspeakers
have been installed as part of technological upgrades in classrooms at
Opinmäki, Lintuvaara and Karakallio schools in Espoo, Finland, delivering
superior sound and oustanding reliability.
The team at office technology experts Perkko Oy oversaw the installation at
the three schools. Tarja Karppinen of Perkko Oy says “The Genelec speakers
sound great, they’re straightforward to install and we get great feedback from
users. We had absolutely no problems with installation of the loudspeakers
at the schools, and their reliability is terrific. We regularly recommend them
to our clients, and we find that once people have heard Genelec, they do
not want to go back to anything else!”
The loudspeakers have been installed in a variety of learning environments,
with many pairs of loudspeakers placed either side of interactive whiteboards,
forming a multimedia focal point. An often overlooked aspect of
educational environments, Tarja argues that sound can play a key role in students’
learning. She added “Clear sound is very important in education, and
particularly in music, media and language rooms. One area which we have
noticed its importance is in language lessons when students are listening
to a foreign language, and trying to discern subtle sounds. One example of
this is the distinction between the German ‘s’ and ‘ss’ sounds. The precise
sound of Genelec is absolutely ideal for this purpose, as well as for general
everyday use.”
100
“CLEAR SOUND IS VERY IMPORTANT
IN EDUCATION, AND PARTICULARLY
IN MUSIC, MEDIA AND LANGUAGE
ROOMS. ONE AREA WHICH WE
HAVE NOTICED ITS IMPORTANCE
IS IN LANGUAGE LESSONS.”
Tarja first began using Genelec loudspeakers in Perkko Oy’s work in 2010,
having initially installed the 6010 series, and she has continued to recommend
them. “The first time we used them, we found the sound was much
better than the loudspeakers we used in previous installs. We have since
installed between 200 and 300 Genelec loudspeakers every year, and the
reliability of them has been outstanding. Speakers in schools receive heavy
use, and the reliability of Genelec loudspeakers is a massive benefit, meaning
that nobody has to go out and replace the speakers. Whilst there may
be cheaper speakers available, with Genelec’s reliability we find that overall
there is a considerable saving.”
The Genelec 4010, 4020, 4030 and 4040 are compact and powerful twoway
active loudspeakers designed for indoor commercial and professional
installations. All models contain an integrated amplification unit comprising
an active electronic crossover, overload protection circuitry and two power
amplifiers, one for each driver.
The models in the range feature the die-cast aluminium Minimum Diffraction
Enclosure (MDE), with relatively large internal volumes; softly curved
edges and outstanding mechanical strength. As a result, the imaging accuracy
and low frequency extension with such a compact enclosure are truly
astounding. The enclosure design also incorporates the advanced Directivity
Control Waveguide (DCW) for the treble driver, providing an amazingly
smooth on and off axis response and a long, curved reflex port ending in
a wide flare for excellent bass articulation. Both drivers are protected by
sturdy metal grilles.
A powerful combination of 4030B, 8030B, 7050B and 8010A products now
populate the stylish, sprawling space of the Sanomatolo building in Helsinki,
providing exceptional audio clarity. The Genelec speakers can be found in
conference rooms, video studios, sound editing rooms, radio studios and
lobbies all over the building, demonstrating their versatility and ability to deliver
precise, neutral sound in a wide range of environments.
Nelonen Media, part of Sanoma Media Finland, reaches more than 90% of
Finns through its diverse media portfolio of national and local stations and
channels. It operates four nationwide radio channels and two regional radio
channels: Groove FM, Radio Suomipop, Radio Rock, Radio Aalto, The Loop
and Metro Helsinki. The firm was keen to implement an audio solution which
not only sounded great, but added a touch of style to the clean and modern
aesthetic of the building’s interior.
Renny Järvinen, Head of sound production at Nelonen Media, has worked
on the radio aspect of the business since 2006. “When we built our first two
radio stations, Radio Rock and Radio Aalto, we found that most of our studio
equipment worked very well with Genelec monitors. It became an obvious
choice for us when we were looking to expand; they just have that familiar,
great sound. We also love its beautiful Finnish design, which fits in perfectly
with our new modern studios. They are able to achieve that flat, neutral response
which we love, but we also enjoy their understated aesthetic which
is so characteristic of the brand.”
A total of eighteen 4030B speakers were installed on the site. The compact
Genelec 4030B installation speaker is a powerful system ideal for small to
mid-sized commercial installations. As an active loudspeaker, the Genelec
4030B contains drivers, power amplifiers, active crossover filters and
protection circuitry. This integrated design makes installations easier and
more efficient as separate power amplifiers are not needed. The Minimum
Diffraction Enclosure (MDE) is made of die-cast aluminium and shaped to
reduce edge diffraction. The Genelec 4030B loudspeaker features Intelligent
Signal Sensing (ISS) circuitry which switches the loudspeaker to standby
when no audio input is detected (ErP 2013 Directive). Thanks to its versatile
response adjustments the Genelec 4030B is ideal for a wide range of indoor
installations, and is now available in a full range of colours to special order.
8030B and 8010A studio monitors were also installed to provide accurate
monitoring for radio broadcasting. Both models are ideal for use in music
studios, mobile vans, digital workstations, radio and TV broadcasting environments,
with their compact size making them ideal for smaller spaces.
Nelonen also opted to install compact 7050B subwoofers, which provide
a perfect complement to the monitors by extending the low frequency response
down to 25 Hz. The 7050B also incorporates Genelec’s patented
Laminar Spiral Enclosure (LSE) technology which provides precise bass articulation
and extended low frequency capacity without noises and distortion.
OSAKA
RESTAURANT
LIMA, PERU
120
121
GENELEC AUDIO SOLUTION ENSURES
SUPERB SOUND REPRODUCTION TO
ACCOMPANY DELICIOUS FOOD AT ONE
OF THE FINEST RESTAURANTS IN LIMA.
Osaka serves up high quality Japanese and Japanese-Peruvian (Nikkei) cuisine
in the Peruvian capital of Lima. With music playing a key part of the
restaurant’s ambience and entertainment, integrator Sonar Audio was called
in to add superb quality audio as a perfect accompaniment to Osaka’s delectable
dishes and stylish surroundings.
The restaurant is located in the basement of a new cooperative building in
the San Isidro district, and the installation aimed to achieve neutral sound in
every area of the acoustically untreated space. Consistent audio performance
in the 500 square metre area posed a challenge due to its poor acoustics,
and in addition, the client was also keen to maintain a clean, good-looking
restaurant aesthetic. A further requirement was for part of the restaurant
space to be able to be turned into a lively entertainment space after dinnertime,
with the option to host DJ parties and celebrations long into the night.
Sonar opted for a stereo system installation using an array of Genelec loudspeakers
from the 4000 Series. The installation was required to have the
option for a stage area with ambient music, but also be able to deliver
excellent quality and power in the dining, bar, lounge, toilets, terrace and
private areas. In addition, Sonar was tasked with hiding the DJ booth in order
to maintain the stylish interior of the restaurant. In the stage area there is a
piece of furniture ready to move and convert into a DJ booth, changing the
dynamic of the space and increasing the sound possibilities. Sonar worked
one year in advance from the plans with architects Costa+Herrera, who were
involved in the entire process. The architects’ work made it possible to deliver
the solution which provides a clean aesthetic and exemplary sound quality
throughout the space, with precisely located speakers.
“WHEN WE WERE COMMISSIONED
TO DESIGN AN EXTREMELY
SONOROUS SOUND SYSTEM FOR
THIS CLIENT I COULDN’T THINK OF
ANY OTHER GEAR THAN GENELEC.”
122
“When we were commissioned to design an extremely sonorous sound
system for this client I couldn’t think of any other gear than Genelec, mainly
because of the reliability”, says Clifford Day, director of Sonar. “The first requirement
was to fill this big restaurant with good sound and also take into
account that the sound in the lounge and bar should be powerful enough to
impress clients when needed. What I liked most about this project was that
the intention was not to create a club-restaurant; this place must be always
a restaurant first and foremost, but the sound system should be as good
as it can be without the requirement for really high pressure levels. Again,
this is a perfect situation to work with Genelec, whenever you need the best
sound without the requirement for very high SPLs (More than 114 dB SPL
in all areas). With a good selection of Genelec pieces we were able to fulfil
this expectation. 123
124
“BUDGET IS ALWAYS AN ISSUE IN
PROJECTS SUCH AS THESE, AND
WORKING WITH GENELEC, YOU
KNOW YOU GET A PRODUCT THAT
IS COMPLETE AND READY TO TWEAK
AND GET THE MOST OUT OF IT.”
“The second problem was the need to control sound in a large area with a
lot of concrete and glass. We added some diffusers and placed the speakers
in their best position to achieve a tight sound. Reverberations cannot be
felt and the sound is very lively. Budget is always an issue in projects such
as these, and working with Genelec, you know you get a product that is
complete and ready to tweak and get the most out of it. If properly done,
sound behaves the way needed and results are better than expected by the
clients. Exceeding the goal is always gratifying.”
Osaka now not only stands out thanks to its meal quality but also by the
comfort the guests experience in this top restaurant, which is supported by
the remarkable sound quality. Furthermore, it is a great night venue in Lima,
ready for parties and other kind of events.
G LIVELAB
LIVE MUSIC BAR
HELSINKI, FINLAND
126
127
WHEN LIVELABORATORIO OY SET
ABOUT OFFERING A FRESH TAKE ON
THE LIVE MUSIC VENUE, THE IMPORTANCE
OF A SUPERIOR SOUND SYSTEM
BECAME ITS TOP PRIORITY.
The new organisation – owned by The Finnish Musicians Union – aimed to
tackle a challenging industry climate by bringing an unrivalled audio experience
to the scene. Having opened its doors at the end of August 2016, G
Livelab is a stunning 150-seat venue in Helsinki which is designed to cater
to all musical genres. The venue is fully equipped with a flexible bespoke
Genelec sound solution, including the first Finnish install of the new 1236A
SAM Studio Monitors, as well as the 8430A IP Studio Monitors, the first
commercially available audio-over-IP studio monitor.
“As we have seen a slight overall decline in music club audiences in Finland
and elsewhere, we wanted to dig a little deeper into what the reasons might
be and what could be done to improve the situation,” says Ahti Vänttinen,
Chairman of the Board of Livelaboratorio Oy . “First of all, we were convinced
that music hasn’t turned bad. Instead, the level of expectations of the audience
has probably gone up in many ways. People are used to a pretty good
audio quality as a lot of us go around wearing headphones. Many seem to
be unhappy with the general standard of live audio today.”
128
Noting these raised standards in audio, Livelaboratorio Oy first examined
what options were available to them in order to deliver an experience that
would exceed expectations. “We were not happy with the commercial live
audio solutions offered by the major players of the business, as their main
objective seems to be to focus as much sound pressure as possible to far
away from the speakers, i.e. to cover the whole listening area with as few
speakers as possible and do it as cost-effectively as possible. Our starting
point was only the best possible sound quality for the whole audience. We
soon realized that the logic of the live audio systems will not work, as we
would need to provide the audience with direct sound, not reflections. The
only way to do this seemed to be with a lot of speakers arranged so that
everyone in the audience could get – as much as possible – a near-field
speaker exposure.”
Having set such exacting requirements, the next question for the venue
was to decide which speakers to install, and Livelaboratorio Oy felt that
Genelec was the perfect fit for its audio ambitions. “Musicians seem to
consider Genelec an industry standard which they are used to listening to,
especially in recording studio situations,” adds Ahti. “Genelec stands for
neutral, transparent sound, which suited our idea of leaving the decision of
how the music should sound like to the musicians. In addition, many music
professionals involved in the creation of G Livelab had been using Genelec
for a long time in various situations. As there is a high emphasis on design
in G Livelab, we also think that Genelec speakers represent Finnish design
in a great way.” The install took full advantage of Genelec’s extensive range,
including the 8430A IP Studio Monitors, which contractors Bright Sales &
Installation Oy selected.
“The Genelec 8430 IP SAM Studio Monitors with AES67 network offer a
huge variety of possibilities for sound designers in the newly opened club G
Livelab in Helsinki,” says Santtu Sipilä, Head of Installation of Bright Sales &
Installation Oy. ”The original specification for the club’s ‘Lokki’ virtual acoustic
system was with Genelec 8030B Studio Monitors, but the networked
approach quickly became the first choice for AV contractor Bright Sales &
Installation Oy. The ‘Lokki’ virtual acoustic system was designed by Tapio
Lokki, professor at Aalto University.
“MUSICIANS SEEM TO CONSIDER
GENELEC AN INDUSTRY STANDARD
WHICH THEY ARE USED TO
LISTENING TO, ESPECIALLY IN
RECORDING STUDIO SITUATIONS.”
129
130
131
“The design team of Bright has a long history with audio networks including
Dante and Q-Lan, both of which to soon have AES67 compatibility. Easier
cabling and integration and future possibilities to route any audio channel
to any loudspeaker were the key decision points in choosing the networked
loudspeakers. The future of installed audio is in the network and it is great
to see Genelec as one of the first manufacturers to offer networked loudspeakers
for these kinds of applications.”
Whilst the potential to create a new live music experience for Helsinki was an
exciting opportunity, there were a series of challenges to overcome in order
to achieve such a bold and innovative install, including a need to change
perceptions. “The first major challenge was the attitude of the live audio
gurus we initially talked to. Some of them said that this cannot and should
not be done. A common object of mistrust was the directional capabilities
of Genelec speakers. Later that proved to be entirely unfounded,” says Ahti.
“Another challenge was making sure there was enough headroom for amplified
rhythm music, especially the drum set. In the end, it was a surprise
how much power is needed to reproduce in sufficient SPL a rhythm section.
Although the multi-speaker system with delay lines makes it possible to keep
the overall volume lower than usual, we still needed to use the biggest main
speakers Genelec makes.”
The virtual acoustics system at G Livelab is unlike any other in existence. It
consists of 40 Genelec 8430 IP SAM loudspeakers, eight of which are on
the stage area and 32 in the audience area. The system takes input from six
microphones in the ceiling of the stage or from the stereo auxiliary output
directly from the desk. Thus, the virtual acoustics can be used with purely
acoustic acts, but also with amplified acts together with the normal PA system.
The input signals are fed to a custom made 64-channel time-variant
feedback delay network that generates natural reverberation, which is routed
to the 40 virtual acoustics loudspeakers. The outputs are delayed according
to the position of each loudspeaker to guarantee the proper localization of
sound sources on the stage. The reverberation can be adjusted so that
the space sounds like anything from a bar environment all the way up to
a cathedral. In addition, the levels of reverberation on the stage and in the
audience area can be separately adjusted to optimize both the support for
the musicians and the spatial sound for the audience.
THE VIRTUAL ACOUSTICS
SYSTEM AT G LIVELAB IS UNLIKE
ANY OTHER IN EXISTENCE.
132
When the virtual acoustics system is properly used, it is imperceptible to the
spectators of a live gig. The space merely feels live and intimate to those
watching on, while the focus stays on the act on the stage. The virtual
acoustics help the mixing engineers to keep the main PA signals clear, as
the system allows the distribution of reverb equally to the whole audience
area. Therefore, each act from a string quartet to a hard core metal band
can be optimally mixed to fit in to the venue.
Theatre Consultant Tapio Ilomäki, from Akukon Oy, summarised the system:
“The signal path of the sound system is fully digital from mic preamps to
Genelec monitors. In addition, it is fully possible to connect an analogue
audio sound console in parallel with the digital.
133
134
“The console and the A/D converters are Yamaha CL5 and Rio Series. The
analogue console is connected to the system via Klark Teknik mic splitters
and RIO A/D converters. Broadcast companies can easily use this system
and connect also by using a MADI interface. For example, a Finnish national
broadcasting company has been interested in this. At the moment the system
supports 56 channels but in the near future the capability may increase
to 96 channels.
“The system processing and routing are handled via QSC’s DSP. The QSC
also works as a processor in AV use when the console is not needed. For
people with hearing problems, the signal distribution has been made with
Sennheiser’s IR system, which can also be used for interpretation purposes.’
“The audio signal is divided into the main audience area. Genelec monitors
are also used backstage, in office spaces as well as in the toilets, all delayed
to match the main PA system.”
“Both audio and HD quality video can be recorded as multi track versions
to 64 channel hard disk. This material can be sent to the artist or performer
as a memory or to be finished with post production work. Audio and video
can also be distributed online via a live Pobit system. Thus for example,
sitting on the terrace, one can watch performances with their own smart
phone or tablet.
“The venue is also equipped with a 5.1 sound system for watching movies.
The screen is naturally perforated to enable the best audio experience. The
venue’s microphone selection covers all needs starting from small classical
or acoustic performances to large scale Big Band recordings.”
“The video system of the venue is implemented with HD resolution but the
infrastructure allows also 4K. The video system enables the use of two different
stage spaces for presentations. In addition to that, the performers’
audio and video can be broadcast outside the venue. All the cameras fulfil
the needs of broadcast. The HD video is distributed to backstage and office
spaces as well.”
“GENELEC MONITORS ARE ALSO
USED BACKSTAGE, IN OFFICE
SPACES AS WELL AS IN THE
TOILETS, ALL DELAYED TO
MATCH THE MAIN PA SYSTEM.”
“Acoustically the venue is almost fully disconnected
from the rest of the house and outside
world. The acoustics of the venue is reasonably
neutral throughout the audience area. This
has been tested by listening to a natural violin
sound in all listening places. The sound stays
neutral and carries nicely into every last corner
of the venue. The Genelec SAM monitors
with their automated calibration system have
been a great help with this as well.”
The end result is a venue which delivers a
live sound unlike any other. The flat, neutral
response of the Genelec speakers is perfectly
complemented by the venue’s interior, which
was designed by Marco Casagrande, and incorporates
urban materials – including brick,
concrete, asphalt, glass, copper, steel, leather
and ceramics – into its stylish design. G Livelab
now proudly sits within the rich cultural
landscape of Helsinki, and makes a unique
contribution to its music scene by hosting a
string of stellar acts – both Finnish and international.
“After a couple of weeks of performances with
different types of music from classical, to pop,
jazz and rap, the audience response has been
very enthusiastic,” adds Ahti at Livelaboratorio
Oy. “Music professionals say they have never
heard anything like this in a live setting, where
you can hear all the nuances of music even in the last seat in the bar. The rest
of the audience are also noticing the difference, as they can hear everything
wherever they sit, and the music does not need to be as loud as it very often
is. There are also other types of benefits. Even discussion during a soft or
acoustic performance is not as annoying as it might be, as there is usually
a speaker closer to your ear than those who speak.
“MUSIC PROFESSIONALS SAY
THEY HAVE NEVER HEARD ANYTHING
LIKE THIS IN A LIVE SETTING.”
“AT SOME POINT THERE WAS
SOME UNCERTAINTY AND STRESS,
AS THE FINAL RESULT WAS NOT
YET AT HAND.”
“Personally, as the one responsible for the whole project and especially the
speaker concept, I couldn’t be happier. At some point there was some uncertainty
and stress, as the final result was not yet at hand. We were clearly
taking a risk, as nothing quite like this had been tried before. But now I think
we can say that we changed the rules of live audio to some extent. I hope
this can serve as a model for future development in other venues.
“A great big thanks to the guys at Genelec for their patience and flexibility as
we worked our way towards the perfect end result. It took some time and
effort, but was definitely worth it.”
