continúan en el punto de mira de la actualidad
deportiva mundial con la celebración del Gran
Premio de Europa de Fórmula 1 en el Valencia
Street Circuit. El circuito urbano de Valencia
se ubica en el mismo espacio donde se celebró
con gran éxito la 32ª America’s Cup y
refuerza un momento histórico en cuanto a
proyección de nuestra sociedad.
La organización de acontecimientos deportivos
de repercusión mediática internacional como
este Gran Premio, la salida de la Volvo Ocean
Race 2008-2009 desde el puerto de Alicante,
el master de golf Comunitat Valenciana-
Castellón Costa Azahar y el torneo de Tenis
500 ATP en el Ágora de la Ciudad de las Artes
y las Ciencias son algunos ejemplos de la
apuesta de la Generalitat por el deporte al
máximo nivel, así como la promoción y presencia
en todo el mundo de la imagen de la Comunitat
Valenciana.

with the hosting of the Formula 1 European Grand
Prix on the Valencia street circuit – a circuit that
takes in the same scenery along which the 32 nd
America’s Cup was so successfully staged – further

The organisation of major international frontpage
sporting events such as this Grand Prix,
the start of the Volvo Ocean Race 2008–2009
from the port of Alicante, the Region of Valencia-

apostando decididamente por elaborar, en el marco de su oferta,

capaz de decantar al turista hacia la elección de sus destinos.
La Comunitat Valenciana, una región europea con una larga trayectoria
turística y siempre atenta a los continuos cambios en
un sector tan dinámico y globalizado como el turismo, ha conseguido
complementar su ya de por sí excelente oferta de
destinos y productos con una variada y amplia oferta deportiva
y de ocio.
Los grandes eventos que se están celebrando en distintos
puntos de la geografía de la Comunitat Valenciana, entre los
que este año destacan el Gran Premio de Fórmula 1 en Valencia
y la salida de la Volvo Ocean Race en Alicante, son un nuevo
atractivo para el visitante, que además puede disfrutar de
acontecimientos convertidos, año tras año, en una cita ineludible
para muchos visitantes, como es el Festival de Música
Independiente de Benicàssim, que con el inmejorable escenario
del litoral y las playas de Castellón, celebra ya su decimocuarta
edición.
Y precisamente, sin perder de vista el privilegiado litoral de
playas mediterráneas del que puede presumir la Comunitat
Valenciana, el Rincón del Viajero, acerca al lector hasta Gandia.
La ciudad ducal, uno de los primeros destinos turísticos nacionales,
es uno de los ejemplos de éxito del turismo de sol y playa,
que se muestra como uno de los más sólidos pilares sobre los
que desarrollar una amplia diversidad y complementariedad de

In recent years, leading tourist destinations have been making
a concerted effort to develop the best selection of sporting, cultural
and recreational activities within the framework of what they
have to offer, to gain a competitive edge that draws tourists towards
them. The Region of Valencia is a European region with a
great history of tourism and one that has always been attentive
to the constant changes in the highly dynamic and globalised
sector that is tourism, applying a large dose of imagination and
distinction to complement its already excellent array of
destinations and products.
The major events being held at various locations around the
Region of Valencia, including the European Grand Prix in
Valencia and the start of the Volvo Ocean Race in Alicante, are
providing the foundations upon which an extensive programme
of cultural activities is being built, such as the Independent
Music Festival in Benicàssim – a festival set against the
unrivalled backdrop of the Castellón coastline and beaches –
which is now celebrating its 14 th year.
And it is precisely the Region of Valencia’s privileged
beaches along the Mediterranean coastline that are the focus
of this issue’s Traveller’s Corner: more specifically, Gandia. As

La tercera galería del Institut Valencià
d’Art Modern (IVAM) acoge, hasta el 14
de septiembre, la exposición del diseñador
gráfico y artista plástico, Alberto Corazón.
Corazón, nacido en Madrid en 1942,
entiende esta disciplina artística como
una herramienta para mejorar su relación
con lo que le rodea, con su entorno y con
los objetos y símbolos que conforman la
cultura, y desarrolla su trabajo tanto en
el área del diseño gráfico como en la del
diseño industrial.
En esta exposición, Alberto Corazón,
imprime grafismo a sus composiciones
en las que yuxtapone formatos, colores,
texturas y formas, creando nuevos signos
y símbolos que poseen significaciones
muy diversas.
Alberto Corazón, inspirado en pintores
barrocos como Juan Sánchez Cotán
y Francisco de Zurbarán, actualiza el
clasicismo de la naturaleza muerta al
llevar sus elementos al terreno de la abstracción
homenajeando el bodegón como
uno de los géneros pictóricos más destacados
de la pintura española. Precisamente
esos bodegones son puramente simbólicos
ya que las botellas, vasos y frutas son
sugeridos con superposiciones de trazos
de colores sobre diversos fondos.
La Real Academia de Bellas Artes de
San Fernando, al introducir el diseño como
nueva disciplina, nombra a Corazón en
2006 miembro de la academia. De esa
forma, el diseñador se convierte en el primero
que se incorpora a la prestigiosa institución.
Además, es el único diseñador
europeo que ha recibido la Medalla de
Oro del American Institute of Graphic Arts,
el más importante premio internacional
de Comunicación Visual.
The third gallery at the Valencian Institute
of Modern Art (IVAM) is holding an
exhibition by one of Spain’s most
internationally renowned designers, graphic
designer and plastic artist, Alberto Corazón.
Born in Madrid in 1942 and working
within the areas of both graphic and
industrial design, Corazón approaches
these art forms as a tool to improve his
relationships with his surroundings and
with the objects and symbols that shape
culture.
In this exhibition, which will be running
until 14 th September, Alberto Corazón
stamps graphics on his compositions, in
which he juxtaposes formats, colours,
textures and forms to create new signs and
symbols with a whole range of meanings.
Inspired by the tradition of Baroque
painters such as Juan Sánchez Cotán
and Francisco de Zurbarán, Corazón
brings the classicism of still life up to date
by bringing its elements into the realm
of abstraction, paying tribute to the still
life as one of the most outstanding pictorial
genres of Spanish painting. More specifically,
these still lifes are purely symbolic, with
the bottles, glasses and fruits being
suggested through the superposing of
sweeps of colour over various backgrounds.
With the introduction of design a new
discipline at the San Fernando Royal
Academy, Corazón was appointed as a
member of the Academy in 2006, making
him the first ever designer to be incorporated
within this prestigious institution. In
addition, he is the only European designer
to have received the Gold Medal from the
American Institute of Graphic Arts, which
is the most important international award
for visual communication.

La campaña de excavaciones desarrollada
este año en el yacimiento de Ana ha
permitido recuperar 125 fósiles de
dinosaurios que, unidos a los 371
recuperados durante anteriores
campañas, formarán parte del futuro
proyecto del Museo de Dinosaurios de
Morella (MUDIM). Los paleontólogos
y directores de las excavaciones Andrés
Santos y Ángel Galobart han explicado
que el yacimiento de Ana es uno de los
más importantes en España del Cretácico
Inferior, con más de 115 millones de
años de antigüedad.
Además, los paleontólogos han destacado
el importante hallazgo, durante
la pasada campaña, de un hueso de
1,20 metros de longitud de un dinosaurio
que podría haber fallecido hace
más de 115 millones en la comarca de
Els Ports. También se han encontrado
piezas de especial interés como un
dentario que no sólo aportará luz sobre
los dinosaurios del yacimiento, si no
que lo hará, además, sobre la paleobiología
de los mismos.
El futuro museo de dinosaurios
albergará una de las colecciones más
importantes de fósiles de dinosaurios
de España y será un centro internacional
de referencia de la Paleontología. La
mayor parte de los materiales que se
exhibirán serán fósiles autóctonos de
la era del Cretácico Inferior, procedentes
de cerca de los 200 yacimientos
hallados en la comarca de Els Ports.
El museo de dinosaurios contará con
sedes en Morella y Cinctorres.
La pasada campaña, financiada
por Castellón Cultural dentro del proyecto
MUDIM, ha contado con paleontólogos
del Institut Català de
Paleontología y del Grup Guix de Vilareal.
La campaña también ha contado
con la colaboración del Ayuntamiento
de Cinctorres, que continúa con el
proyecto de investigación y difusión
paleontológica iniciado en el 2002 y
el con ICP.
This year’s excavations at the Ana site
have enabled the recovery of 125
dinosaur fossils, which are now set to
form part of the upcoming project to
create the Morella Dinosaur Museum
(MUDIM) alongside the 371 fossils
recovered during previous digs. The
palaeontologists and excavation directors
Andrés Santos and Ángel Galobart
have explained that Ana is one of
Spain’s biggest Lower Cretaceous sites,
and it holds over 115 million years of
history.
The experts also highlighted the
major discovery of a 1.2-metre-long bone
during the last dig, which formed part
of a dinosaur that might have died
over 115 million years ago in the
district of Els Ports. They have also found
objects of special interest, such as a
set of teeth that will shed light on not
only the dinosaurs at that site, but
also on their palaeobiology.
The future dinosaur museum will
house one of Spain’s biggest collections
of dinosaur fossils and will be a leading
international centre for palaeontology.
Most of the materials on show will be
local fossils from the Lower Cretaceous
period that have been discovered at the
near 200 sites unearthed within the Els
Ports district, while the museum itself
will have sites in Morella and Cinctorres.
The last excavations, which were
funded by Castellón Cultural within
the MUDIM project, were carried out
by palaeontologists from the Catalonian
Palaeontology Institute (ICP) and the
Guix Group from Vila-real. It also
benefited from collaboration with the
Cinctorres Town Council, which is
continuing the palaeontological research
and dissemination project started in
2002, and with the ICP.

A VISION OF THE FUTURE OF ALICANTE
El President de la Generalitat, Francisco
Camps, ha presentado las actuaciones territoriales
estratégicas previstas para la
provincia de Alicante y ha destacado
que con esta batería de actuaciones se
proyecta una visión global del presente
y el futuro de la provincia de Alicante.
Camps ha expuesto la necesidad de que
todos los agentes implicados en el crecimiento
de la provincia sumen en un
mismo proyecto global.
El President ha apostado por el
Corredor Mediterráneo, el AVE y el agua
como elementos clave para el futuro de
la provincia de Alicante. Entre las
actuaciones destaca la puesta en marcha
una red de carreteras de articulación
provincial y la mejora de la accesibilidad
del territorio para encauzar los nuevos
desarrollos residenciales.
Otra propuesta es la puesta en marcha
del programa Agua y Paisaje que
actuará sobre ríos como el Vinalopó o el
Serpis y sobre zonas húmedas como los
embalses históricos, el marjal Pego-Oliva
o el Hondo, con el objetivo de llevar a cabo
una restauración ambiental y paisajística
de cauces fluviales y de humedales,
así como su adecuación para un uso
público sostenible a través de rutas ciclistas,
miradores o corredores verdes.
En materia de medio ambiente, se definirá
una Red de Espacios Naturales del
Litoral y un plan de choque de reforestación
de la provincia, con especial atención
a los terrenos marginales o cultivos
abandonados.
El President ha realizado estas declaraciones
en un acto que también ha contado
con la asistencia del presidente de
la CAM, Vicente Sala; de COEPA, Modesto
Crespo; de CIERVAL, Rafael Ferrando y
el presidente de la Cámara de Comercio
de Alicante, Antonio Fernández Valenzuela
y de las cámaras de comercio de Orihuela
y de Alcoy, Juan Francisco Cerdán y
Enrique Rico.
The President of the Generalitat (Valencian
regional government), Francisco Camps,
has unveiled the forecast strategic territorial
actions for the province of Alicante and
has affirmed that this set of actions will
project a global vision of the present
and future of the province of Alicante.
Camps explained the need for all agents
involved in the growth of the province to
unite and come together under a single
overarching project.
The President backed the Mediterranean
Corridor, the AVE rail project and water
as key elements for the future of the
province, while the proposed actions
include the creation of a network of roads
to improve communication within the
province and increased accessibility in
order to house new residential
developments.
Another proposal is the launch of the
Water and Landscape (Agua y Paisaje)
programme, which would cover rivers
such as the Vinalopó and the Serpis and
wetlands such as the former reservoirs and
the Pego-Oliva and El Hondo marshlands.
The aim is to restore the environment and
landscapes of the rivers and wetlands, and
to make them suitable for sustainable public
use by way of cycle paths, lookouts and
green corridors.
Another environmental project is the
definition of a Natural Coastal Spaces
Network and a major reforestation plan
for the province, paying special attention
to marginal terrain and abandoned
agricultural land.
The President announced these
proposals at an event attended by the Chairs
of CAM (Vicente Sala), COEPA (Modesto
Crespo) and CIERVAL (Rafael Ferrando)
and by the Presidents of the Chambers
of Commerce in Alicante (Antonio Fernández
Valenzuela), Orihuela (Juan Francisco
Cerdán) and Alcoy (Enrique Rico).

Juan Carlos I, que ha sido la sede de

puente sobre el canal de salida de
los barcos a la bahía. El sinuoso trazado
discurre por el área de expansión
de la ciudad hacia el puerto y
conecta las grandes avenidas con
la zona marítima, donde se han dispuesto
diferentes zonas de espectadores
para disfrutar de este
acontecimiento deportivo mundial.

The FIB festival is back
Summer sun, hundreds of concerts, thousands of young music fans, lots of heat
and decibels… Yes, it’s the return of the greatest live music event of the year: the
FIB Heineken festival in Benicàssim. This year’s amazing line-up includes
something for everyone, featuring Leonard Cohen, My Bloody Valentine, Mika, Morrissey,
The Raconteurs, Gnarls Barkley, Justice, Death Cab for Cutie, Morente Omega with
Lagartija Nick, Tricky, Sigur Rós, José González, Vive la fête and Siouxsie. For four
days from 17 th to 20 th July, the most eagerly awaited independent music festival
in the whole of Spain will be offering an extravaganza of music, cinema, fashion,
art, dance and courses. The stage is already set in Benicàssim for this, the 14 th
outing of the world-famous FIB festival.

El FIB Heineken ha demostrado, con el
paso del tiempo, que es una cita ineludible
y no sólo musical, ya que en catorce
años de vida se ha convertido en un
importantísimo hecho cultural y en un
motor de iniciativas y propuestas que
han rebasado la barrera de la música.
Por sus escenarios han pasado, año
tras año, los mejores artistas y grupos
del mundo como The Chemical Brothers,
The Cure, Lou Reed, Amy Winehouse,
Depeche Mode, Radiohead, Björk,
Massive Attack, Pet Shop Boys o Moby.
Pero no sólo los consagrados han estado
en Benicàssim ya que muchos grupos
noveles, nuevas tendencias y música
experimental han tenido y tienen su
espacio en el FIB. De nuevo este año,
el festival tiene un cartel de lujo con artistas
confirmados de la talla de My Bloody
Valentine, Morente Omega con Lagartija
Nick, Siouxsie, Mika, Morrissey y Leonard
Cohen. Precisamente el cantante canadiense,
autor de Suzane, ha confirmado
que actuará en el escenario verde el
domingo 20 de julio.
Unos días antes del comienzo del festival,
cuando más aprieta el calor de la
canícula, la marea humana que componen
los más de 40.000 asistentes, empiezan
a tomar posiciones en las zonas de
acampada y en el pueblo. Las áreas de
acampada son espacios de uso gratuito
para los poseedores del abono de
cuatro días y estarán en funcionamiento
desde el lunes previo a la celebración
del festival hasta el martes posterior. Dentro
del recinto están distribuidos los diferentes
escenarios que conforman el festival
y tres zonas de descanso. El recinto
alberga una gran área, en la que una enor-
me pantalla es la protagonista, y otras
dos más pequeñas, pero de fácil acceso,
sirven para reponer fuerzas entre concierto
y concierto.
Además de los escenarios y las zonas
de acampada y descanso hay espacios
para otras disciplinas tales como la
danza, la moda, el arte contemporáneo,
el teatro y los cortometrajes, lo
que demuestra que la creatividad en el
FIB Heineken fluye a través del entusiasmo
y la curiosidad. Una muestra es
el Festival de Cortos por el que han
pasado, desde su nacimiento en el año
2000, figuras consagradas como Fele
Martínez, Natalia Verbeke o Alejo Sauras
o la relación que existe entre moda y música
en el FIB para la que se ha creado
una plataforma, la Mustang Fashion
Weekend, cuyo objetivo es catapultar a
la fama los nuevos y jóvenes valores del
diseño. Las artes escénicas tienen su espacio
en FIB-Actúa donde el teatro, el
circo, el cabaret y otras disciplinas
interactúan con el público. Lo mismo
que el arte contemporáneo enmarcado
en FIB-Art, una exposición que ofrece los
lenguajes artísticos contemporáneos más
sugerentes por medio de esculturas,
instalaciones y videocreaciones. El FIB
tiene además con bailarines y coreógrafos
una Cita con la Danza y es el único festival
del mundo que incluye entre sus
actividades la realización de cursos de
verano, en colaboración con la Universidad
Jaume I de Castellón.

Moby. And performing alongside these
established giants in Benicàssim have
been countless up-and-coming new
bands, with the FIB festival ever ready
to embrace new trends and experimental
music. Once again, this year’s festival
boasts an impressive line-up, with
confirmation from the likes of My Bloody
Valentine, Morente Omega with Lagartija
Nick, Siouxsie, Mika, Morrissey and
Leonard Cohen. Canadian Cohen, the
genius behind Suzanne and many other
classics, will be performing on the Green
Stage on Sunday 20 th July.
In the days leading up to the start
of the festival, when the summer sun
is at its height, a human tide begins to
wash over Benicàssim as over 40,000
festival-goers arrive to take up their
positions in the camping areas and
around the town. The three camping areas
are free of charge to holders of the fourday
festival pass and will be open from
the Monday before the festival through
to the Tuesday after it. Within the festival
ground itself there are various different
stages and three chill-out zones – one
large area with a huge screen, and two
smaller ones that are easy to access –
in which people can recharge their
batteries between concerts.
As well as the stages, camping areas
and chill-out zones, there are spaces for
other disciplines such as dance, fashion,
contemporary art, theatre and short
films, proving that at the FIB Heineken
festival the creative juices flow through
enthusiasm and curiosity. One such
example is the Short Film Festival,
which was opened in the year 2000
and has since welcomed leading figures
such as Fele Martínez, Natalia Verbeke
and Alejo Sauras. Another example is
the synergy between music and fashion
that can be seen and felt at the FIB
festival, resulting in the creation of the
Mustang Fashion Weekend platform,
which aims to catapult young new
designers to stardom. The performing
arts also have their place at the Benicàssim
festival in the shape of the FIB-Actúa
space in which theatre, circus, cabaret
and other disciplines interact with the
audience. For contemporary art there is
FIB-Art, an exhibition that offers up
the most suggestive of contemporary
artistic languages by way of sculptures,
installations and video creations. For lovers
of dance there is Cita con la Danza or
‘A Date with Dance’, featuring dancers

La Fórmula 1 calienta motores en la capital del
Turia donde se disputará, del 22 al 24 de agosto,
el Gran Premio de Europa en el Valencia
Street Circuit, uno de los pocos circuitos urbanos
del campeonato. La carrera será uno de los
eventos más importantes del año. La emoción está
servida en Valencia donde se verá en directo el
duelo por los primeros puestos de la clasificación,
también se podrá comprobar el impresionante rendimiento
de los monoplazas en un circuito creado
expresamente para el Gran Premio e incluso
esperar lo inesperado merced a una de las increíbles
hazañas de Fernando Alonso. La décimo segunda
prueba del campeonato mundial de Fórmula
1, que promete ser una de las más espectaculares,
conseguirá, por sí sola, que durante tres
días más de 500 millones de espectadores de
todo el mundo tengan puesta la mirada en la
Comunitat Valenciana.
Formula 1 is revving its engines in the city of
Valencia, which will be home to the European Grand
Prix from 22 nd to 24 th August. One of the major
events of the year, this race will be held on the
Valencia Street Circuit, which is one of the F1
Championship’s few urban circuits and was
created especially for this Grand Prix. The event
will give residents and visitors to the city the chance
to witness live and direct the battle for pole
position, to admire the impressive performance
of the F1 single-seaters, and even to expect the

UN CIRCUITO RÁPIDO Y URBANO
Este año por primera vez se celebran
en España dos grandes premios y, por
primera vez también, Valencia acoge
uno: el décimo segundo. El próximo 24
de agosto será un día inolvidable para
los aficionados españoles al automovilismo,
porque en un escenario de
ensueño los mejores pilotos del mundo
se diputarán el podio.
El circuito sobre el que se desarrollará
el Gran Premio de Europa de Fórmula
1 los próximos siete años es un trazado
urbano que recorre la marina Juan
Carlos I, sede de la última America’s
Cup. El trazado discurre también por
el área de expansión de la ciudad hacia
el puerto y conecta las grandes avenidas
con la zona marítima.
El Gran Premio de Europa, que
rompe con la concepción de circuitos
urbanos lentos y carentes de emoción
por la dificultad de realizar adelantamientos,
tiene una longitud de 5.473
metros y el ancho de la pista es de 14
metros. Cuenta con un total de 25
curvas, once a la izquierda y catorce
a la derecha y los monoplazas deberán
dar 57 vueltas completas al circuito para
cubrir los 310 kilómetros previstos.
El Valencia Street Circuit será uno
de los más rápidos del mundial y su diseño
permitirá observar espectaculares
maniobras de adelantamiento. Se trata
de un trazado técnico y muy variado que
combina velocidades muy altas con
zonas mixtas de menor velocidad de paso.
Los monoplazas de Formula 1 tendrán
la posibilidad de superar en Valencia
los 300 kilómetros por hora en cuatro
puntos del circuito.
Además, el trazado se ha hecho
con un asfalto especial, con el aspecto
normal, pero con un compuesto
especialmente recomendado para
aguantar grandes esfuerzos horizontales.
La recta de salida y los boxes se van
a situar en el tinglado número cuatro
del puerto.
La idea, desde el primer momento,
fue poner en el calendario un evento
diferente, un circuito urbano del
siglo XXI con todas las medidas de
seguridad al servicio de los pilotos y también
acercar el espectáculo más vibrante
del deporte internacional a los
aficionados, gracias a un escenario
inmejorable como es el puerto de
Valencia.
HISTORIA DE UN GRAN PREMIO
El Gran Premio de Europa comienza su
andadura en febrero de 2006, cuando
el President de la Generalitat,
Francisco Camps, y Bernie Ecclestone,
presidente de FOM acuerdan la celebración
de una prueba de GP2 Series
en el Circuit de la Comunitat Valenciana
Ricardo Tormo. En abril de ese mismo
año, Ecclestone visita Valencia para asistir
a la celebración de las GP2 Series
en el Circuit.
Sin embargo, no es hasta el 9 de
mayo de 2007, cuando Francisco
Camps anuncia la celebración del Gran
Premio de Europa de Fórmula 1 en
Valencia para 2008. En junio, los
representantes de Valmor Sport –orga-

nizadores del evento- firman un acuerdo
con Bernie Ecclestone en presencia
del Presidente de la Generalitat. Ese
acto fue el verdadero pistoletazo de salida
para que Valencia abriera sus puertas
al Campeonato del Mundo de
Fórmula 1.
En julio de 2007, la Conselleria de
Infraestructuras adjudica la redacción
del proyecto para la construcción del
Valencia Street Circuit y en octubre de
ese mismo año empiezan unas obras,
que ahora acaban de concluir. “La celebración
de este evento es el reconocimiento
al trabajo realizado, intenso y
apasionante, para lograr esta apuesta
de futuro sin igual, un proyecto para
Valencia, España y Europa”, indicó en
su presentación el Presidente de la
Generalitat Francisco Camps.
Hoy, más de dos años después de
aquella primera cita entre Camps y
Ecclestone, está todo listo para que
empiecen a rugir los motores de los monoplazas
en la capital del Turia, en un circuito
único en el calendario de la
Fórmula 1.

A FAST CITY CIRCUIT
This year sees two major firsts for
Formula 1 in Spain, with two Grand Prix
being held on Spanish soil for the first
time ever, and the city of Valencia
making its debut as it hosts the 12 th
race of the season. 24 th August is set
to be a historic day for Spanish motor
racing fans, when the best drivers in
the world compete for a place on the
podium against a stunning Spanish
backdrop.
For the next seven years, the Formula
1 European Grand Prix will be held on
a street circuit that takes in the Juan
Carlos I marina, which was home to the
most recent edition of the America’s Cup.
The circuit also covers the expanding
area of Valencia towards the port and
connects the city’s two major avenues
with the harbour zone.
At 5,473 metres long and 14 metres
wide, the European Grand Prix circuit
is set to smash preconceptions that city
circuits are slow and unexciting and that
they provide woefully few opportunities

for overtaking. It has 25 turns – 11 lefthanders
and 14 right-handers – and
drivers will have to make 57 full laps
of the circuit to cover the necessary 310
kilometres.
The Valencia Street Circuit is expected
to be one of the fastest in the World
Championship and its design will allow
for spectacular overtaking manoeuvres.
The technical and extremely varied
course combines high-velocity stretches
with mixed areas that require lower
speeds, and will enable drivers to
exceed 300 km/hour at four points
around the track.
The track has also been surfaced with
special asphalt that looks normal but
that has been specially designed to
withstand major horizontal forces. The
starting straight and the starting grid
will be on the port’s quay number 4.
From the very start, the idea for
the European Grand Prix was to mark

safeguard the drivers and one that
would bring this most thrilling of
international sporting events closer to
the fans thanks to the spectacular
setting that is the port of Valencia.
THE HISTORY OF A GRAND PRIX
The idea for the European Grand Prix
to be held in Valencia can be traced back
to February 2006, when the President
of the Generalitat (Valencian regional
government), Francisco Camps, and
Formula One Management President
Bernie Ecclestone agreed to hold a
race from the GP2 Series at the Region
of Valencia’s Ricardo Tormo circuit. In
April that year, Ecclestone visited
Valencia to attend the race.
However, it wasn’t to be until 9 th May
2007 that Francisco Camps would
announce that Valencia was to host
the European Grand Prix in 2008. In
June, representatives from Valmor
Sport, the organisers of the event,
signed an agreement with Bernie
Ecclestone in the presence of the
President of the Generalitat. It was
this act that truly gave Valencia the green
light to stage the F1 World Championship.
In July 2007, the regional
government’s Ministry for Infrastructure
oversaw the drafting of a project to
construct the street circuit. Works
quickly followed in October, and have
recently been concluded. “The holding
of this event is the recognition of all the
passionate and intense work that has
been done in order to achieve this
commitment to an unrivalled future, a
project for Valencia, Spain and Europe,”
declared the President of the Generalitat,
Francisco Camps, in his presentation.
Today, more than two years since that
first meeting between Camps and
Ecclestone, everything is now in place
in Valencia and ready to receive the
revving engines of the Formula 1 cars
on this unique circuit.

La playa de l’Ahuir, una perla eterna
y brillante, es la más septentrional
de Gandia, un arenal virgen , una playa

del río Vaca, un estuario
que da cobijo a un buen catálogo de
fauna autóctona. Es una playa serena,
bañada por un mar cálido de color
azul intenso, cuya naturaleza se pierde
en el horizonte entre médanos. En
l’Ahuir se está, se mira, pero sobre
todo se disfruta. En esta playa existe,
además, una zona naturista.
Un novísimo paseo de madera
conecta la playa de l’Ahuir con la playa
Nord. El proyecto de construcción del
paseo ha contemplado también la recuperación
dunar, el aumento de la vegetación
con la plantación de palmeras,
la creación de tres puntos de encuentro
en zonas de sombra, la instalación
de postas sanitarias permanentes y el
incremento de mobiliario urbano y
zonas de juegos en la arena.
La playa Nord, galardonada con
Bandera Azul, es la más urbana y está
delimitada por un paseo marítimo que
se convierte en una de las mejores
opciones para disfrutar de unas vistas

playa, de extraordinaria arena

actividades lúdicas. Un largo espigón

El Náutico, con capacidad para
400 embarcaciones, está situado al norte
del puerto y junto con éste separa la

La playa de Venecia es una pequeña
y tranquila playa de arena dorada
bordeada por un cordón de dunas fijas
con vegetación y protegido del viento
del norte por un espigón. Tras Venecia
está Rafalcaid, la playa más meridional
de Gandia. Rafalcaid es un arenal
delimitado por una línea de pequeñas
dunas fijadas por una escasa vegetación
mediterránea, como si de un capricho
de la naturaleza se tratara.

climate, ecological riches, a wealth of
monuments and above all joyous light.
The city’s six stunning kilometres of
coastline embrace an array of different
ambiences, from the modern and cosmopolitan
to the strikingly natural,
while its four sandy beaches – l’Ahuir,
Playa Nord, Venecia and Rafalcaid – are
all similar yet diverse.
The most northerly of Gandia’s
beaches is l’Ahuir, a sparkling gem of
unspoilt sands that stretches for almost
three kilometres, fringed by dunes and
dense reed beds until it reaches the estuary
of the River Vaca, which is home to
many indigenous animals. It is a quiet
and serene beach bathed by warm
waters of the deepest blue and framed
by sand dunes. L’Ahuir is a beach for
admiring, for simply being and above
all for enjoying. There is also a nudist
section on this beach.

Playa Nord is the most urban of
Gandia’s beaches and is skirted by an
esplanade that offers fantastic views and
separates the beach from a residential
area which houses the cream of the city’s
hotels and apartments. With its
extraordinary golden sands, this beach
is a beauty to behold and it too stretches
for almost three kilometres. The sea here
is calm, which lends extra magic to a
setting that is much sought after precisely
for the tranquillity of its waters, for its
play areas and for its beach bars and
recreational activities. A long breakwater
made of rocks in the most unexpected
of forms and colours marks the end of
Playa Nord and offers views of the Club
Náutico sailing club and the port.
With berths for 400 boats, the Club
Náutico is located to the north of the
port and together these separate the city
beach from the small stretch of sand
known as Venecia.
Venecia beach is cosy and quiet, with
golden sands fringed by a line of dunes
anchored by vegetation and protected
from the wind by a breakwater. After
Venecia comes Rafalcaid, Gandia’s
most southerly beach, which is bordered
by a line of low dunes covered
in sparse Mediterranean vegetation,
like some kind of whim of Nature.

Una ruta por las calles y plazas de
Gandia permite vivir parte de la histo-
ria más viva de Europa. Ciudad Ducal
desde 1399, ofrece un magnífico recorrido
para disfrutar de la cultura. La ruta
puede empezar en el Palacio Ducal, situado
en el antiguo recinto amurallado
que rodeaba la villa medieval. El pala-
cio es uno de los monumentos más
emblemáticos de la ciudad. Se trata de
un edificio construido en torno a un gran
patio central, en el que destaca una escalera
adosada de dos tramos. En su interior
está el Saló de Corones, la Sala dels

Carròs i Centelles, la Sala Daurada, la
cerámica de Manises del siglo XVIII referida
a los Quatre Elements y la celda
oratorio de Sant Francesc de Borja.
La Colegiata, segunda parada, es un
claro ejemplo de la arquitectura gótica
catalana-aragonesa de los siglos
XIV y XV. Destaca por su aspecto sobrio
y austero, eminentemente horizontal,
de poca altura, macizo y con escasas

aperturas al exterior. El templo, que en
1499 fue elevado a la categoría de
Colegiata, posee dos puertas y fue
declarado monumento histórico-artístico
en 1931.
La antigua Universidad es el edificio
que albergaba las cátedras universitarias,
gracias a que Francesc de
Borja consiguiera en 1549 una
Universidad para Gandia, que regen-
tó hasta el final la Compañía de Jesús.
Durante más de dos siglos se impartieron
clases universitarias en este
centro docente, hasta que en el año 1767
se decretó la expulsión de los jesuitas.
En el año 1806 tomaron posesión del
edificio los escolapios, que lo destinaron
también a actividades docentes y que
se han mantenido en él hasta hoy en
día.
El Ayuntamiento se erigió en 1778
y su fachada, del más puro estilo neoclásico
y lo único que se conservó en
la restauración acometida en 1982,
está rematada por una elegante balaustrada
sobre la que descansan cuatro bustos
de piedra que representan las cuatro
virtudes que deben observar los gobernantes.
El Palacio del Marqués González de
Quirós es un edificio con una severa
estructura defensiva y palatina, simétrica
en planta y fachada, construido
a finales del siglo XIX. De él, destacan
sus puertas de madera tallada y las rejas
y balconadas de hierro forjado. El jardín
de la Casa de la Marquesa, como
se conoce popularmente al palacio,
hoy Casa de Cultura, alberga especies
autóctonas y decorativas y es lo más
admirado del edificio.
El Teatro Serrano es una de las
muestras modernistas que posee la
Ciudad Ducal. Inaugurado en 1900
con el nombre de Teatro Circo, se
remodeló en 1912 y pasó a denominarse
Teatro Serrano. Hoy en día es uno
de los edificios más emblemáticos de
Gandia.
Hay que reseñar que Gandia fue la
cuna de autores clásicos de tanta relevancia
como Ausias March, Joanot
Martorell o Joan Roís de Corella, considerados
como la plana mayor del
Segle d’Or de la literatura en lengua vernácula,
y de una parte de la familia de
los Borja, los valencianos más universales.
Digna continuadora de esta tradición,
la Gandia actual mantiene un
alto nivel de exigencia cultural, que, desde
la perspectiva literaria, se concreta en
la existencia de un número muy considerable
de escritores y en la celebración
de los Premis Literaris de
Gandia, creados en 1959 y que organiza
el Ayuntamiento de la ciudad el día
20 de noviembre, coincidiendo con el
aniversario de la publicación de la novela
Tirant lo Blanc de Joanot Martorell
de caballería.

A WALK THROUGH HISTORY

To stroll through the streets and squares
of Gandia is to become part of the
liveliest history in Europe. A ducal city
since 1399, Gandia is a magnificent
place in which to soak up some culture.
A great route to take could start at the
Palacio Ducal palace in the ancient
walled precinct that used to surround the
mediaeval town, which is one of Gandia’s
most emblematic monuments. The palace
is built around a great central patio,
with a remarkable double staircase.
Inside the palace are the Saló de Corones
(Hall of Crowns), the Sala dels Carròs i
Centelles (Carròs and Centelles Family
Hall) and the Sala Daurada (Golden
Hall), plus 18 th century ceramics from
Manises depicting the Four Elements and
the cell-chapel of Sant Francesc de
Borja.
Second stop along the trail is La
Colegiata collegiate church, a prime
example of Gothic Catalonian-Aragonese
architecture from the 14 th and 15 th
centuries. It is notable for its sober and
austere appearance, which is markedly
horizontal, low-slung, solid and with few
openings onto the outside. The temple,
which was raised to the status of
collegiate church in 1499, has two
doors and was officially declared a
monument of historical and artistic
interest in 1931.

The nearby mountains offer enjoyable walks,
revealing Nature in all her splendour
Chairs, which meant that Francesc de
Borja was able to establish the University
of Gandia in 1549. This centre of learning
was run by the Society of Jesus for over
two centuries until the decree for the
expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767. In 1806
the building was taken over by the Piarists,
who also used it for educational purposes
and who remain there to this very day.
The City Hall was erected in 1778
and its façade, which is in the purest
Neoclassical style and is the only feature
to have been preserved following the
refurbishment in 1982, is topped by an
elegant balustrade upon which rest four
stone busts representing the four virtues
that must be observed by the city’s
rulers.
The Palace of the Marqués González
de Quirós is a severely defensive and
palacial structure with a symmetrical
floor plan and façade and was built in
the late 19 th century. It is notable for its
carved wooden doors and its wrought-iron
railings and balconies. The gardens of
the Casa de la Marquesa (House of the
Marchioness), which is how the palace
is popularly known, are currently home
to the Casa de Cultura cultural centre.
These are the palace’s star feature and
house many indigenous and ornamental
species.
The Teatro Serrano theatre is one of
Gandia’s modernist buildings. Opened in
1900 under the name of Teatro Circo or
“Circus Theatre”, it was refurbished in
1912 and renamed the Teatro Serrano.
It is now one of the city’s most emblematic
buildings.
Importantly, Gandia was the birthplace
of several major classical authors,
including Ausias March, Joanot Martorell
and Joan Roís de Corella, who are
considered to be key figures of Spain’s
Golden Age of literature in non-standard
tongue. The city also witnessed the birth
of several members of the Borgia family,
who are arguably the most widely known
Valencians. True to tradition, the Gandia
of today still maintains a high level of
cultural excellence which, from a literary
perspective, is manifest in the city’s
rather considerable number of writers and
in the Premis Literaris de Gandia literary
awards. Created in 1959 and organised
by the City Council, these awards are
presented on the 20 th November, coinciding
with the anniversary of the publication
of the novel Tirant lo Blanc by Joanot
Martorell.

Una interesante visita a pocos kilómetros
de Gandia es al monasterio cisterciense
de Santa María de la Valldigna.
Además hay dos rutas señalizadas por la
comarca de la Safor que son las del
Racó del Duc y la que discurre entre Senill
i Borró.
Una antigua vía de tren que unía
Alcoy y Gandia es el recorrido de la primera
ruta. El Racó del Duc, también denominado
Barranc de l’Infern, es el tramo
del río Serpis que discurre entre el municipio
valenciano de Villalonga y el alicantino
de l’Orxa. El río atraviesa un desfiladero
limitado por las sierras de la Safor de
1.013 metros sobre el nivel del mar y
la Cuta de 680, donde los acusados
desniveles ofrecen un paisaje único en
estas comarcas, junto a una vegetación
y fauna interesantes. La ruta tiene una
longitud de doce kilómetros y discurre
la mayor parte por la plataforma que
utilizaba el ferrocarril de Alcoy al Grau
de Gandia. El itinerario es casi todo
llano, circula paralelo al río Serpis, atraviesa
cinco túneles y es idóneo para
todas las edades, en bici o a pie.

El Mediterráneo, por un lado, y las
montañas, por otro, enmarcan una
ciudad en la que se unen historia,
naturaleza y diversión. Las sierras
cercanas ofrecen varios recorridos
amenos y divertidos y muestran su
agreste naturaleza con todo el
esplendor. La Cima del Montdúver,
el Barranc de l’Infern o el Circ de
la Safor, son rutas naturales y cualquiera
de ellas sorprende por su belleza.
Lo que también se extrapola al
paraje natural del Parpalló Borrell,
de más de cinco millones de metros
cuadrados protegidos. Además de
las fincas que lo componen como
la de la Caldereta, la Cova del
Garrofer o el Barranc de Borrell, un
gran atractivo del paraje reside en
la Cova del Parpalló, uno de los santuarios
prehistóricos más importantes
del Mediterráneo.
La ruta entre Senill y Borró va desde
las marjales a las dunas y mide 8,7 kilómetros.
El itinerario varia según el
lugar de la salida, de modo que si se
sale de Gandia el itinerario recorre
más de trece kilómetros. La estación
del año ideal para realizarlo es la primavera,
aunque lo cierto es que en cualquier
mes se puede admirar la belleza
de los paisajes y disfrutar de su flora
y su fauna.

An interesting site just a few kilometres
from Gandia is the Cistercian
monastery of Santa María de la Valldigna,
and there are also two signposted trails
through the district of La Safor: the El
Racó del Duc trail and that between Senill
and Borró.
The first trail follows the route of the
old railway that used to link Alcoy and
Gandia. Also known as Barranc de
l’Infern, the Racó del Duc after which
the trail is named refers to the stretch
of the River Serpis that runs between
the town of Villalonga in the province
of Valencia and l’Orxa in the province
of Alicante. The river passes through
a defile bordered one the one side by
the La Safor ranges, which reach an altitude
of 1,013 metres, and the 680metre-high
La Cuta on the other, where
dramatic drops give rise to a landscape
that is unique among these districts
and is populated by interesting
flora and fauna. The trail is 12 kilometres
long and follows the railway embankment
for the most part, passing through

The nearby ranges offer several
enjoyable walks, revealing
rugged Nature in all its splendour.
The Pico del Montdúver mountain
peak, Barranc de l’Infern gully and
the Circ de la Safor cirque form natural
walking trails and are surprising
in their beauty. The same
also goes for the landscape of El
Parpalló Borrell, which encompasses
over five million square
metres of protected land. Much of
the attraction of this landscape
resides in La Cova del Parpalló,
one of the biggest prehistoric sanctuaries
on the Mediterranean, and
in the estates dotting the scenery,
such as La Caldereta, La Cova del
Garrofer and El Barranc de Borrell.

The Senill to Borró tourist route
runs from the wetlands to the dunes for

Las montañas que enmarcan por detrás
la ciudad ni llegan al mar, ni se pueden
esquivar con la mirada, siempre están
presentes. El macizo alberga uno de los
últimos bosques de alcornoques y un
viaje por este espacio natural lleva al
caminante a impresionantes parajes y
paisajes, como el del barranco de
Borrell que engloba un conjunto de
barrancos, el Gota, el Tancat y el Borrell,
que forman la principal red hídrica de
Gandia. Esta formación hídrica presenta
una topografía abrupta y de gran
belleza, gracias en parte a sus grandes
precipicios y peñas de rocas calcáreas
del Cretácico Superior y por las redondeadas
rocas del lecho del río. Las
cuevas y las simas completan la diversidad
geomorfológica del barranco.
Dos sendas homologadas recorren
el paraje de Parpalló-Borrell, una zona
de gran belleza paisajística donde las
formas del relieve se combinan con
una vegetación típicamente mediterránea.
La acción continuada del agua
sobre la roca calcárea ha ido formando
barrancos, cuevas y galerías subterráneas
que modelan las montañas.
Matorrales, pino blanco, algarrobos y
carrascas son la principal vegetación,
un mosaico natural habitado por gatos
monteses, ardillas, jabalíes, conejos
y águilas reales que aportan un valor
ambiental y ecológico de gran singularidad.
La primera es la senda del Portalet
que discurre por el barranco de Borrell
y se inicia en el kilómetros 9 de la carretera
CV-65 entre Gandia-Barx que va
paralela al lecho del barranco y llega
hasta una peña en la subida del barranco
cerca de la cima, conocida popularmente
como Portalet. El tiempo aproximado
de recorrido es de dos horas y su recorrido
es de dificultad baja y apto para todas
las edades ya que el desnivel máximo es
de 210 metros.
La otra senda, la del Parpalló, discurre
por la vertiente sur del macizo del
Montdúver y se inicia en el límite entre
los municipios de Barx y Gandia. La ruta
es un sendero circular que asciende hasta
los 700 metros de altura sobre el nivel
del mar y desciende hasta volver al punto
de partida. El recorrido total de la
senda es de 5,5 kilómetros de pendiente
sinuosa y la duración en tiempo es de
unas tres horas aproximadamente.
Además de estas dos sendas naturales,
hay otras que recorren lugares de
interés histórico de la Safor como las
rutas de Sant Jeroni y la de la Drova-
Barx.
La ruta ecoturística del monasterio
de Sant Jeroni de Cotalba sale
desde Gandia y pasa por los municipios
de Benirredrá y Real de Gandia
por la comarcal 320 hasta llegar a
Rótova, donde se erige el cenobio.
El edificio data del siglo XIV y su interior
puede visitarse en parte ya que
se han abierto al público algunas
de sus estancias más significativas
como el claustro, la iglesia o las
cocinas. El exterior también es una
visita obligada merced a sus jardines,
huertas y pinares.
La ruta de la Drova-Barx es una
ruta turística que llega hasta la Drova
y Barx y pasa por Marxuquera y la
Ermita. En Gandia, en el paseo de
Germaníes aparecen los indicadores
a Barx. El itinerario atraviesa un típico
paisaje de naranjos y montañas de
la Safor hasta llegar a Ermita, donde
los domingos se instala un mercadillo
de antigüedades. En Marxuquera existen
interesantes zonas de escalada.
Además desde la Drova se puede ascender
a pie al Montdúver, desde donde
se divisa una amplia panorámica.

THE PARPALLÓ-BORRELL LANDSCAPE

The omnipresent mountains that rear
up behind Gandia house one of the
area’s last remaining cork oak forests,
and a trip through this countryside
leads walkers through impressive
landscapes such as the Barranco de
Borrell, which is made up of the Gota,
Tancat and Borrell gullies and constitutes
Gandia’s main hydrological network.
These gullies are abrupt and beautiful,
with their huge cliff faces, rocky crags
dating from the Upper Cretaceous and
the smoothed boulders on the river
bed. Caves and summits then round off
the geomorphological diversity of the gully.

Desde la nacional 332 y la AP-7 (salida
60) se puede acceder a Gandia.
RENFE conecta Madrid y Gandia
con un tren diario desde 10 de junio
hasta mediados de septiembre tanto
de ida como de vuelta. El resto del
año hay un tren Madrid-Gandia los
viernes y Gandia-Madrid los domingo.
A diario hay trenes con destino
Valencia cada media hora. En autobús,
la conexión con Valencia y
Madrid también es diaria y continua.
Two officially recognised paths wend
their way through the Parpalló-Borrell
landscape, a hugely scenic area in
which typically Mediterranean vegetation
clings to a stunning backdrop. Since time
immemorial, the constant action of
water on the limestone rocks has formed
the gullies, caves and subterranean
galleries that have shaped these
mountains. Shrubs, white pine, carobs
and kermes oak are the predominant
species of vegetation, providing a varied
natural habitat for wildcats, squirrels,
wild boar, rabbits and golden eagles, which
add a special touch and ecological
value to the area.
The first of these paths is the Portalet
trail, which follows the Barranco de
Borrell and starts at Km 9 on the
Gandia can be reached via the N-332
and the AP-7 toll road (exit 60).
There is also a daily return train
from Madrid to Gandia from 10th June
until the middle of September.
During the rest of the year, the
Madrid-Gandia train travels on Fridays
and the Gandia-Madrid return leg
departs on Sunday. Trains run every
day to Valencia every half an hour.
The bus services to Valencia and
Madrid also run daily throughout
the year.

The joyful hustle and bustle of city life
forms an island of activity surrounded by a
sea of tranquillity formed by the peaceful
coastline and the rugged natural beauty of
the interior
CV-65 road from Gandia to Barx. It
runs parallel to the course of the gully
all the way up to an outcrop towards the
top of the gully, popularly known as
Portalet. The journey takes approximately
two hours and its difficulty rating is
easy, since the climb is only 210 metres,
making it suitable for ramblers of all ages.
The second path is the El Parpalló
trail on the south face of the El Montdúver
massif, starting at the border between
the town of Barx and Gandia. It is a
circular route that rises to 700 metres
above sea level before dropping again
as it returns to where it started. This steep
and winding trail covers a total distance
of 5.5 kilometres and takes around
three hours.
As well as these two nature trails,
there are other routes that take in site
of historical interest within the district
of La Safor, such as the Sant Jeroni trail
and the La Drova-Barx trail.
The ecotourism trail to the Sant
Jeroni de Cotalba Monastery starts out
in Gandia and passes through the towns
of Benirredrá and Real de Gandia along
the district’s 320 B-road until it reaches

The La Drova-Barx tourist route is
a tourist trail leading to La Drova and
Barx, passing via Marxuquera and La
Ermita. Signposts to Barx can be found
in Gandia, on Paseo de Germaníes
walk. The route takes visitors through
typical La Safor landscapes of orange
groves and mountains before arriving in
Ermita, where there is an antiques
market on Sundays. At Marxuquera
there are interesting areas for rock
climbing, and from La Drova visitors can
walk up Montdúver mountain, which offers
impressive panoramic views.

Mujeres del Hospital y la
antigua iglesia son las tres
áreas expositivas del
museo
La exposición permanente del MAGa gira
en torno a la Prehistoria comarcal,
desde los primeros habitantes del
Paleolítico hasta la Edad de los Metales,
como preámbulo a las sociedades urbanas
jerarquizadas de época protohistórica.
Las salas de Hombres y de Mujeres del
antiguo hospital albergan estas dos
muestras. El resto de culturas y exposiciones
monográficas ocupan la antigua
iglesia.
El MAGa cuenta también con un
laboratorio de restauración, sala multiusos
para la realización de talleres
didácticos, seminarios y proyecciones
audiovisuales, sala de investigadores, archivo
documental y biblioteca auxiliar
especializada en temas de patrimonio
y de arqueología. Debido al continuo incremento
de fondos arqueológicos, sobre
todo por las recientes excavaciones
urbanas realizadas en el término municipal,
está en proceso de habilitación

un edificio próximo al Hospital de Sant
Marc que permitirá acogerlos de forma
sistematizada y con correctas condiciones
de conservación. Además, el
diseño del sistema expositivo, dotado con
módulos interactivos y servidores de

y de los resultados de investigaciones
que puedan actualizar y enriquecer
los contenidos del museo.
Excavaciones arqueológicas realizadas
en el solar del edificio han documentado
una ocupación humana de la
zona desde la Edad del Bronce, así
como restos de una necrópolis íbera.
También se ha descubierto la existencia
de un antiguo vial que, continuando la
actual calle del Hospital, conducía hasta
un portal de la muralla del siglo XIV.
Al margen de las exposiciones, el
MAGa ofrece también otras actividades
como los talleres de la arqueología del
futuro: la ecología del plástico, cazadores
de la Prehistoria en la Safor, sonidos de
la Prehistoria, la arquezoología y primeros
agricultores y ganaderos.

From hospital to museum
inhabitants of the Palaeolithic through
to the Metal Age, as a precursor to the
hierarchical urban societies of the
Protohistoric Age. These two shows are
on display in what used to be the men’s
ward and the women’s ward. The remaining
cultures and monographic exhibitions
occupy the former church.
The MAGa also has its own restoration
laboratory, a multi-purpose hall for
holding educational workshops, seminars
and audiovisual events, a researchers’
room, a documentary archive and an
auxiliary library specialising in the areas
of heritage and archaeology. Due to its
constantly expanding archaeological
collection – particularly with the recent
excavations carried out within the Gandia
city limits – another building near the
Sant Marc Hospital is currently being
refurbished to enable the pieces to be
housed in a systemised way and in
suitable conditions for their preservation.
The pieces are exhibited with interactive
modules and computerised information
servers, which will enable new discoveries
and the results of research to be
incorporated and the museum’s contents
to be updated and enriched.

south-eastern end of the walled
precinct in Gandia and on the left
bank of the River Alcoy is now
home to the Gandia Archaeology
Museum (MAGa). The discovery of
the famous rock art site at La
Cova del Parpalló in 1872 and
the rich and varied archaeological
heritage of the La Safor district are
reflected in the scientific research
and the excavation and collection
of archaeological relics by both
amateurs and experts alike. And
it is all of this material that has
enabled the creation of the MAGa
archaeology museum.

Ricard inauguró el Arrop en octubre

como Restaurante Revelación
en la Cumbre Gastronómica de Madrid
Fusión. Los éxitos continuaron en 2007

The overt minimalism of the Arrop in
Gandia makes for a spectacular contrast
with the lavishness of the dishes served
up in this 30-seater , which has rightfully
earned its place as one of the city’s
unmissable eateries. It is run by Mari
Carmen Bañuls and Ricard Camarena,
who has revealed himself to be an
unquestionable master of earthy cuisine
with a modern twist – a skill that has earned
him a Michelin star while still in his
early thirties. Starters such as Gamba de
Dénia (Dénia prawn) or Cremoso de torta
del Casar con trufa, anchoa y consomé
gelé (cream of Torta del Casar cheese with
truffles, anchovies and consommé gelé)
and rice dishes such as Bogavante y
coliflor (lobster and cauliflower) or Pichón,
boletus y trufa (rice with young pigeon,
ceps and truffles) provide a taste of
Camarena’s artful blending of surf, turf
and the seasons. The gastronomic
experience at Arrop is then perfectly
rounded off by a competitively priced wine
cellar brimming with wines to enjoy and
to share – exciting wines that encourage
reflection and dreaming.
Camarena opened Arrop in October
2004 and it was soon featuring within
the pages of the most prestigious restaurant
guidebooks but the major boost came in
January 2006 when Arrop was declared
Restaurante Revelación at the Madrid
Fusión Gastronomy Summit. The awards
continued to pour in throughout 2007,
with the Chef of the Year award from the
Valencian Academy of Gastronomy, which
was followed just weeks later by its first
Michelin star.
Arrop is closed on Sundays and
Tuesday evenings, and offers a 58
sampling menu for full tables and a set
express menu for 28.

Calamar con sangre encebollada
Squid with black pudding
INGREDIENTES Y PREPARACIÓN (para cuatro personas):
• Caldo de boletus
30 gr. de boletus congelado y troceado, 0,1 litro caldo de pollo, 2 gr. vinagre de trufa,
c/s láminas de ajo y perejil.
Saltear los ajos con las setas y el perejil. Añadir el caldo e infusionar durante tres
horas. Colar.
• Cremoso de trompetas
10 gr. trompeta, limpia y picada finamente, 50 gr. boletus picado, 10 gr. mantequilla
avellana, 0,2 litros jugo de boletus, 12 gr. resource, 17 gr. gelatina vegetal, 1,2 gr. Santana,
4 gr. gelburger y 15 gr. vinagre de trufas
Saltear las trompetas con un poco de aceite de trufas. Añadir el jugo de boletus y
los gelificantes. Remover sin parar con unas varillas hasta que hierva. Estirar en una placa
gastronorm y congelar. Desmoldar en pieza y cortar porciones de 2,5x2,5 centímetros.
Al pase atemperar.
• Jugo de fesols i naps
600 gr. nabos amarillos, 200 gr. rabo de cerdo, 1 morcilla de cebolla
300 gr. judias blancas secas y remojadas, 150 gr. jarrete de ternera, 150 gr. careta de
cerdo, 150 gr. gallina, 100 gr. panceta, 100 gr. patatas , 80 grs. pencas, un poco de
pimentón dulce de Murcia, 75 gr. sofrito base y 2,8 litros agua.
Sofreir la carne. Añadir el sofrito, el pimentón y los nabos. Rehogar. Sofreir las pencas,
añadir las judias y verter el agua. Cocer a fuego medio tres horas. Añadir las patatas
. Cocer una hora, colar por fino y turbinar para homogeneizar el almidón del caldo.
• El Calamar
Separar el cuerpo de las patas. Reservar los tentáculos y el cuerpo limpio de arena. Enharinar
los tentáculos y freir. Marcar el cuerpo a la plancha 15 segundos por cada lado. Sazonar
con sal de curry y pimienta negra.
INGREDIENTS AND PREPARATION (for four peolple):
• Cep stock
30 g of sliced and frozen ceps, 100 ml of chicken stock, 2 g of truffle vinegar, 1 tbsp
of sliced garlic and parsley.
Sautée the garlic, mushrooms and parsley. Add the stock and allow to infuse for three
hours. Drain.
• Cream of black trumpets
10 g cleaned and finely chopped black trumpets, 50 g chopped ceps, 10 g almond butter,
200 ml cep jus, 12 g resource, 17 g vegetable gelatine, 1.2 g Santana, 4 g gelburger
and 15 g truffle vinegar.
Sautée the black trumpets in a little truffle oil. Add the cep jus, gelatine and gelburger.
Stir constantly until boiling. Pour into a gastronorm container and freeze. Remove in one
piece and cut into 2.5 x 2.5 cm pieces, allow to thaw.
• Jus of beans and turnips
600 g swede, 200 g pig’s tail, 1 onion black pudding, 300 g dried white beans (soaked),
150 g veal shank, 150 g pig’s cheek, 150 g hen, 100 g pancetta, 100 g potatoes,
80 g chard stalks, a pinch paprika, 75 g sautéed chopped onion and garlic and 2.8
litres water.
Lightly fry the meat. Add the sautéed chopped onion and garlic, paprika and swede.
Fry lightly. Lightly fry the chard stalks, add the beans and pour in the water. Cook
over a medium heat for three hours. Add the potatoes. Cook for one hour, pour through
a fine sieve and whisk to homogenise the starch from the stock.
• The squid
Separate the legs from the rest of the squid. Set aside the tentacles and the clean
squid. Flour the tentacles and fry. Sear the squid on a griddle for 15 seconds on
each side. Season with curry salt and black pepper.

ANA LUJÁN (Valencia, 1975) ha paseado su arte
por escenarios de todo el mundo. Ha sido bailarina
del Ballet Clásico de Valencia y de la Rambert
Dance Company de Londres. Hoy es directora de
ensayo en la Phoenix Dance Theatre, también en
Londres. Dicen de ella que tiene tanta energía que
no le cabe en el cuerpo y esa energía estalla cada
vez que se sube a un escenario, donde muestra
su fuerza y magnetismo desde hace más de quince
años. En su carrera profesional ha cosechado
éxitos como ser la primera bailarina de la Rambert
de Londres y ha conseguido premios como el que
le concedió, en 2003, el círculo de críticos británicos
a la mejor bailarina contemporánea o el
de las Artes Escénicas Comunitat Valenciana a la
mejor intérprete en 2006 por su actuación en
Necesidad de Silencio. Ha trabajado con excelentes
coreógrafos como Richard Alston, Karole Armitage,
Ohan Naharin, Mark Baldwin o Henrique Rodavalho.
A pesar de su impresionante currículum, Ana
Luján es algo más que una bailarina y una coreógrafa,
es una estrella con alma de cisne.
ANA LUJÁN (born Valencia, 1975) had weaved
her magic on stages throughout the world. Previously
a ballerina with the Classical Ballet in Valencia
and the Rambert Dance Company in London, she
is now rehearsal director for the Phoenix Dance
Theatre, which is also based in London. It has been
said that she has so much energy that it simply
cannot be contained by her body, and this energy
erupts each time she goes on stage, where she has
been captivating audiences with her strength and
magnetism for over 15 years. Over the course of
her career she has shone as the first ballerina with
the Rambert in London and has won many awards,
such as her selection by the British critics’ circle
in 2003 as best contemporary dancer, and the Best
Performer award from the Region of Valencia
Performing Arts organisation in 2006 for her
performance in Necesidad de Silencio (Need for
Silence). Ana has worked with top choreographers
such as Richard Alston, Karole Armitage, Ohan
Naharin, Mark Baldwin and Henrique Rodavalho.
However, despite her impressive CV, Ana Luján is
more than a mere dancer and choreographer: she
is a star with the soul of a swan.

¿Siempre quiso ser bailarina?
Inconscientemente sí. Sobre los diez u once años es
cuando empecé a ser consciente de ello.
¿Cómo y cuándo empezó?
Empecé a los cinco años, tres días por semana en
una escuela cerca de casa, la de María del Mar
García, que tenía dos profesoras: María del Mar y la
americana Dennis. Fue una decisión tomada por
mi madre, ya que le dijeron que tenía una pequeña
deformación en los pies y los metía hacia dentro al
andar. Lo del ballet le pareció una buena solución,
además ella se alegró pues cuando era pequeña
intentó ser bailarina pero por aquel entonces, su familia
no pudo financiarlo. En esta escuela me examiné
de los primeros cursos de formación de Danza Clásica
de la Royal Academy of Dance. A los nueve, la profesora
aconsejó a mi madre llevarme a otra escuela
de danza en Valencia para continuar las clases todos
los días de la semana. Me inscribieron en la escuela
de Mari Cruz Alcalá que a pesar de ser escuela,
por aquel entonces formaba parte de ella una compañía
de danza clásica medio profesional. Empecé
a ir todas las tardes después de las clases del colegio
y continué con los cursos de RAD. Aquí realicé
los cinco años de exámenes de titulación del
Conservatorio.
¿Fue un comienzo difícil?
Yo estaba encantada. Lo difícil fue compaginar los
estudios de enseñanza escolar con la formación de
Danza. Mis padres tenían que acompañarme y recogerme
de una escuela a otra y tenían que decir a los
profesores del colegio que no tomaba clases de
baile pues llegaron a decirles que las dos docencias
eran incompatibles.

¿A qué aspiraba entonces?
Al principio me conformaba con ir a las clases y aprobar
los cursos de RAD y los del Conservatorio. Una
vez pasados los once años empezaron a sonar unas
campanitas…. Veía ensayar al ballet clásico de
Valencia y las marcas de mis exámenes llegaban a
los honores. Recuerdo muy bien que una compañía
de ballet ruso fue a actuar al Teatro Principal y en
la escuela decidieron llevar a algunas alumnas, vestidas
de bailarinas, para dar flores a los intérpretes
rusos. Los vi en escena y luego detrás del escenario,
entre bastidores y empecé a querer dedicarme
a ello, quería ser una de ellos, quería vivir de la danza…
¿Cuál fue su primera representación?
Mi primera representación fue a los seis años y fue
un final de curso con mi primera escuela, seguro que
muchas personas ha pasado por ello. Luego las
representaciones empezaron a tomar peso, pues
pasaron a ser actuaciones con el Ballet Clásico de
Valencia, a los 14 años: Cascanueces, Paquita,
Coppelia… Aunque sabía que no era una compañía
profesional me dio muchas tablas. Mi primera representación
como profesional fue Axioma 7 con 19 años
en una de las mejores compañías del mundo, la Rambert
Dance Company, bajo la dirección del coreógrafo Ohan
Naharin, en Inglaterra.
Dicen que la vida de una bailarina es, sobre todo,
sacrificio. ¿Qué ha sacrificado para dedicarse profesionalmente
a la danza?
Familia, país, ciudad, idioma, cultura… crecer en
la distancia de lo conocido y aprender muy rápido
factores como la esencia del ser humano. Aprendí
en la escuela de la vida en un mundo desconocido.
Fui con mi escuela a ver un ballet ruso al Teatro Principal, vi en
escena y entre bastidores a los bailarines, quise ser uno de ellos
y vivir de la danza...

¿Cómo es un día normal en la vida de Ana Luján?
¡Ajetreado!... Lo primero que hago es mirar por la
ventana para ver si las nubes dejan brillar el sol. De
tres a cuatro días de la semana imparto clases a los
bailarines de la compañía donde trabajo, la Phoenix
Dance Theatre. Empiezo a las diez de la mañana,
luego dirijo los ensayos hasta las seis de la tarde.
De vez en cuando bailo en las coreografías del
repertorio que crea el director de la compañía, Javier
de Frutos. Tenemos una hora para descansar y
comer. Además casi todos los días tengo reuniones
y trabajo en la oficina antes de la clase.
¿Qué aspecto puede más en su baile, la técnica o
el sentimiento?
Las dos cosas se unen, la técnica tienes que sentirla
para lograr su olvido.
¿Hasta cuándo se ve como bailarina?
Dejé de verme como bailarina en septiembre de
2006 cuando tomé la decisión de ser directora de
ensayo y aceptar un cargo de dirección en una organización
artística. Aunque la verdad y afortunadamente
siguen pidiéndome que interprete alguna
vez.
¿Cuál ha sido su momento profesional más feliz?
Cuando firmé mi primer contrato profesional. Luego
vino el tener ojos familiares entre el público en un
país ajeno al mío y otro momento feliz fue actuar en
Valencia después de 14 años. Y desde luego tener
en mi haber el reconocimiento a mi interpretación
en dos ocasiones, una España y otra en Inglaterra.
¿Qué le decidió a dar el salto a la coreografía?
Siempre ha estado en mi mente, ya de pequeña organizaba
alguna que otra cosa para las fallas. La verdad
es que la coreografía es una mezcla de compartir
experiencias con otros intérpretes tanto física como
verbalmente y una posibilidad de producir una imagen
mental sobre un concepto actual y verla transformada
en realidad.
Lleva fuera de España muchos años, ¿siente nostalgia
de Valencia?
Cuando pienso en Valencia llega a pararse el tiempo.
¿A eso se le llama nostalgia?
¿En que lugar de la Comunitat Valenciana se perdería?
En toda, con esa luz, color, aroma y espacio… La
Comunitat Valenciana tiene duende, solo necesito
tiempo, un traslado para seguir las rutas de este gran
duende.
¿Un escenario natural para un espectáculo de danza
en la Comunitat Valenciana?
La Albufera.
¿Un comida?
La cocina valenciana, mediterránea, casera, a fuego
lento y con mucho amor.

Did you always want to be a dancer?
Subconsciously, yes. It was when I was about 10 or
11 that I started to become conscious of this.
How and when did you get started?
I started when I was five years old, three days a week
at a school near my home – the María del Mar García
school – where there were two teachers: María del
Mar and the American Dennis. It was a decision made
by my mother, who had been told that I had a minor
deformity in my feet, which turned inwards when I
walked. Ballet seemed like a good solution to her,
and she was also very happy with it because when
she was little she wanted to become a ballerina but
her family couldn’t afford it at that time. It was in

this school that I took my first exams in Classical Dance
from the Royal Academy of Dancing (RAD). At the age
of nine, the teacher advised my mother to take me
to another dance school in Valencia to continue my
education every day of the week. They enrolled me
in the Mari Cruz Alcalá School, which at that time was
partly formed by a quasi professional classical dance
company as well as being a school. I started to go every
evening after my regular school classes and I continued
with the RAD courses. It was here that I underwent
the five years of exams for a professional title from
the Conservatorio.
Was it a difficult start?
I loved it but yes, it was quite difficult to combine
regular schooling with my dance training. My parents
had to take me from one school to another and they
ended up telling my school teachers that I wasn’t taking
dance classes after those teachers had declared that
the two schoolings were incompatible.
What were your ambitions at that time?
At first I was simply happy to go to the classes and
pass the RAD and the Conservatorio courses. After the
age of 11, little bells started ringing… I would watch
the Classical Ballet in Valencia rehearsing and the marks
I was getting in my exams were with honours. I can
clearly remember that a Russian ballet company
came to perform at the Teatro Principal theatre and
at school they decided to take some pupils dressed
as ballerinas to present bouquets to the Russian
dancers. I saw them on stage and then backstage, in
the wings, and I started to want to devote myself to
dance, I wanted to be one of them and to make a living
by dancing…
What was your first performance?
My first performance was when I was six, and was an
end-of-year production at my first school – I imagine
many people have had similar experiences. Then the
appearances began to get more serious and weighty,
moving to performances with the Classical Ballet in
Valencia, when I was 14 years old: The Nutcracker,
Paquita, Coppelia… Although I knew it wasn’t a
professional company, they gave me a lot of exposure.
My first performance as a professional was in Axioma
7, when I was 19 years old, with one of the best
companies in the world: with England’s Rambert
Dance Company, under the direction of choreographer
Ohan Naharin.
They say that the life of a dancer is above all one of
sacrifice. What have you sacrificed in order to become
a professional dancer?
Family, country, city, language, culture… to grow up
far away from what you know and to learn very quickly
about things like the essence of human beings. I was
educated in the school of life in an unknown world.
Describe a normal day in the life of Ana Luján.
It’s hectic! The first thing I do is look out of the
window to see whether the clouds are letting through
the sunshine. Three or four days a week I give classes
to the dancers from the company where I work, the
Phoenix Dance Theatre. I start at 10 in the morning,
then I direct rehearsals until 6 in the evening.
Sometimes I dance in the routines created by the director
of the company, Javier de Frutos. We are given an hour
to rest and have lunch. And then practically every day
I’ve got meetings and I work in the office before
class.
Which aspect is strongest in your dance, technique
or feeling?
The two come together: you’ve got to feel the technique
in order to be able to let it go.
How much longer do you see yourself as a dancer?
I stopped seeing myself as a dancer in September 2006,
when I took the decision to be director of rehearsals

and to accept the role of director within an artistic
organisation. Although I do still get asked to perform
from time to time, thankfully.
What has been the highlight of your career?
When I signed my first professional contract. Then it
was starting to see familiar faces in the audience in
a country that wasn’t my own, and another highlight
was performing in Valencia again after 14 years. And
of course the two awards for my performance, one in
Spain and the other in England.
What persuaded you to make the leap to choreography?
It has always been in my mind, and when I was little
I was always organising something or other for the Las
Fallas celebrations. In fact, choreography is a blend
of sharing experiences with other performers both
physically and verbally, and the opportunity to create
a mental image of a current concept and to see it made
a reality.
You’ve lived outside Spain for many years. Are you
nostalgic for Valencia?
When I think of Valencia, time stands still. Is that what
you call nostalgia?
Where would you lose yourself in the Region of
Valencia?
Everywhere, in its light, colours, aromas, space… The
Region of Valencia has spirit, soul, magic– all I need
is a little time to come back and continue along the
paths of this great magical place.
A natural stage for a dance performance in the Region
of Valencia?
La Albufera.
A dish?
Valencian cuisine, Mediterranean, home made, cooked
slowly with lots of love.

The Bodega Dominio de la Vega wine
producers are based in the heart of the
Denominación de Origen Utiel-Requena
Region and it is here amid the vines that
they devote themselves to ageing wine
and producing cava. Set upon a circular
plateau some 45 kilometres across,
the district is watered by the River
Magro, which is responsible for the
alluvial terraces of La Vega. The climate
here is markedly continental due to its
altitude and its distance from the
Mediterranean. The winters are cold
and long, and the summers short,
reaching high temperatures around
noon. Precipitation is scarce, and falls
mainly after the harvest.
This location is perfect for the
creation of wines and cavas – a task
conducted with relish by the Dominio
de la Vega label at their 19 th century Conde
de Villamar home and winery near San
Antonio de Requena, which is more
commonly known as La Casa del Conde.
The property’s prison cells and
underground stores have been refurbished
for use as wine cellars in which the wines
and cavas lie in the shadows and silence
until they are suitably aged. The friendly
and welcoming Bodega Dominio de la
Vega is responsible for many exclusive
wines and cavas, such as the Artemayor
range.
This wine is the fruit of patient,
tender labour and a meticulous respect
for ageing times, resulting in sublime

El President de la Generalitat, Francisco
Camps, ha inaugurado la nueva Ermita
de Santa Ana en la localidad valenciana
de Borbotó.
La nueva Ermita de Santa Ana, que
sustituye a la que antiguamente se
encontraba enclavada dentro del mismo
cauce del barranco del Palmaret, consta
de un edificio, a modo de templete,
de planta cuadrada de cuatro metros de
lado, con 3,5 metros de altura libre, más
forjado y cobertura del recinto con teja
árabe a cuatro vertientes. En su cúspide
se alza una cruz de granito de un metros
y medio de altura.
El edificio dispone de un muro frontal
sobre el que se instaló la imagen de
Santa Ana, así como tres pórticos cerrados
en verja de forja en las paredes laterales
y puerta de entrada en el lado situado
frente a la imagen.
En su interior y en su parte central
se erige un altar fijo, rematado en mármol
blanco, teniendo en su frontis una
representación de la población de Borbotó
realizada en azulejos cerámicos.
La capilla, que conmemora el milagro
de Santa Ana que libró a Borbotó
de una riada, se ha edificado a escasos
metros del mismo lugar donde en
el siglo XVI, según la tradición, apareció
la imagen renacentista de Santa Ana,
patrona de Borbotó, trasladada luego a
la iglesia parroquial. La imagen de la
patrona preside el retablo mayor, rodeada
de las célebres tablas del Mestre de
Borbotó, también del siglo XVI.
The President of the Generalitat (Valencian
regional government), Francisco Camps,
has opened the new Santa Ana Hermitage
in the Valencian town of Borbotó.
The new construction replaces the
former chapel that used to be situated
on the same dried-up river bed in the
El Palmaret gully. This hermitage consists
of a single building with a squareshaped
floor plan measuring 4 metres
by 4 metres and with standing room of
3.5 metres. The building also features
wrought iron and a Moorish, four-pitched
tiled roof top with a 1.5 metres high
granite cross.
On the main feature wall there is an
image of Santa Ana, also there are
three porticos sealed with wrought-iron
railings on the other three walls of the
building.
Inside, there is a fixed altar topped
with white marble stands in the centre
of the chapel, and on its façade a
depiction of the town of Borbotó created
using ceramic tiles.
Built in commemoration of the
miracle of Santa Ana, which saved
Borbotó from a flood, the hermitage
stands mere metres from the spot in which
tradition has it that the Renaissance image
of Santa Ana, patron saint of Borbotó,
appeared in the 16 th century. This figure
was subsequently transferred to the
parish church and now presides over the
main altarpiece, surrounded by the
famous paintings of the Master of
Borbotó, which also date from the 16 th
century.

RESTAURADAS LAS SEDAS VALENCIANAS DE LA HISPANIC
SOCIETY OF AMERICA
RESTORED VALENCIAN SILKS FOR THE HISPANIC SOCIETY
OF AMERICA
La Conselleria de Cultura, a través del
Instituto Valenciano de Conservación y
Restauración de Bienes Culturales (IVA-
COR), ha iniciado en su sede de materiales
textiles de Castellón la restauración
de la colección de sedas valencianas
procedentes de la Hispanic Society of
America de Nueva York. Esta colección
de tejidos valencianos, que consta de
piezas de una calidad única, es la primera
vez que salen de la Hispanic
Society y serán además estudiadas histórica
y científicamente por los técnicos
castellonenses.
Las piezas se restauran además
con el objetivo de realizar una exposición
en 2009 sobre sedas valencianas
en el Museo de Bellas Artes San Pío V
de Valencia y que organizará el Consorcio
de Museos de la Comunitat Valenciana.
La exposición abordará temas como el
arte de los sederos durante los siglos
XV y XVI, su producción y su influencia
en otras manifestaciones artísticas,
lo que permitirá establecer relaciones
de esta manufactura con otras de la cuenca
del mediterráneo.
La mayoría de las telas son valencianas,
pero también hay de otras
comunidades. Como curiosidad cabe reseñar
que los dibujos de algunas de estas
sedas son muy parecidos a los ángeles
de las pinturas de la Catedral de
Valencia, lo que les proporciona un
interés todavía mayor.
La colaboración del Instituto de
Restauración de Castellón y la Hispanic
Society surgió a raíz de la restauración
de la cerámica del Conde Aranda
de l´Alcora. Ahora los responsables la
sociedad de neoyorquina han pensado
de nuevo en Castellón para llevar a
cabo la restauración de las sedas.
Through the Valencian Institute for the
Preservation and Restoration of Cultural
A sets (IVACOR), the Regional Government’s
Department for Culture is beginning
restoration work on a collection of
Valencian silks owned by the Hispanic
Society of America. It is the first time that
this collection of Valencian fabrics, which
contains pieces of outstanding quality,
has left the Hispanic Society in New
York and, as well as being restored, the
silks will also be studied by Castellón
technicians from a historical and a
scientific angle.
One of the reasons behind the
restoration is an exhibition on Valencian
silks intended to be held in 2009 at
the Museo de San Pío V museum in
Valencia, which will be organised by the
Region of Valencia’s Consortium of
Museums. The exhibition will also explore
subjects such as the art of the silk makers
during 15 th and 16 th , plus silk production
and its influence upon other artistic
expressions, thereby establishing
relationships between this manufacturing
and other from the Mediterranean basin.
Most of the fabrics are Valencian,
but there are also a few pieces from other
regions. Curiously, the drawings on
some of these silks are very similar to
the angels that can be found in the
paintings in Valencia Cathedral, which
makes them all the more interesting.
The working relationship between the
Institute for Restoration and the Hispanic
Society came as the result of restoration
work carried out on the Count of Aranda
de l´Alcora ceramic bust – the success
of which has led the heads of the
Hispanic Society to turn to Castellón
once again for the restoration of silks.

RANAS DE FLECHA EN TERRA NATURA

Tras el nacimiento de dos ranas de flecha
azules, el parque de animales y
naturaleza Terra Natura de Benidorm
ha acogido la llegada de otras crías de
una especie similar procedentes de un
zoológico de Alemania, conocidas como
ranas de flecha dorada o rana de oro
(Phyllobates terribilis) y que son consideradas
como el vertebrado más venenoso
del planeta. Los nuevos ejemplares
se exponen en Criaturas Venenosas, en
el área temática de Pangea de Terra
Natura.
The most characteristic artefacts and
day-to-day objects of several pilgrimages
in the province of Castellón are
currently on show at the Museu de
Belles Arts fine arts museum, and have
been grouped together as the main
exhibition called Peregrinos y romerías
(Pilgrimages and Processions). The
objects have been placed in a glass
case in the Ethnology section. More
specifically, the pieces include clothing
and objects from the Els pelegrins de
les Useres pilgrimage, the procession
from Catí to Sant Pere de Castellfort,
and from the Els pelegrins del Portell

Following the birth of two blue dart
frogs, the Terra Natura animal and nature
park in Benidorm has now added other
youngsters from a similar species to its
collection. Originally from a zoo in
Germany, the new arrivals are known
as golden dart frogs or golden poison frogs
(Phyllobates terribilis) and are considered
to be the most venomous vertebrates on
the planet. The new additions are on show
in the Venomous Animals section of the
Pangea themed area at Terra Natura.

FESTIVAL INTERNACIONAL DE JAZZ DE PEÑÍSCOLA
PEÑÍSCOLA INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL
El Festival Internacional de Jazz de
Peñíscola consolida su apuesta por la
calidad y por ofrecer una música que
conjuga las actuaciones de artistas conocidos
por el gran público, como la pianista,
cantante y compositora Diana
Krall (25 julio) o el compositor e
intérprete brasileño Ivan Lins que
actuará el 5 de julio, con otras formaciones
menos conocidas del gran
público, pero muy valoradas por los
amantes del jazz y la crítica especializada,
como Metro Special Edition
(11 de julio) liderada por el trompetista
Randy Brecker y el batería Dave
Weckl, y Kansas City Memories (18
de julio), formada por los músicos
que participaron en el rodaje y la grabación
de la banda sonora y grabación
de la película Kansas City de Robert
Altman.
El ciclo de conciertos gratuitos al
aire libre Jazz a Mitjanit, correrá a cargo
de las formaciones Jazz Street Marching
Band (4 julio) en la cafetería del
Palau, Eric Alexander Quartet, (10 julio),
Biel Ballester Trio & Randy Creer (17
julio) y Paul Evans Quartet (24 julio).
Las tardes de los jueves 10, 17 y
24 de julio, el festival ha organizado
un seminario gratuito que será impartido
por profesores de la escuela de
música Taller 3. Además, en la sala

In its continual bid for quality and in
an effort to offer audiences performances
from both leading mainstream figures
and lesser-known artists, this year’s
Peñíscola International Jazz Festival
will be featuring the likes of famous
pianist, singer and songwriter Diana
Krall (25 th July) and Brazilian composer
and performer Ivan Lins (5 th July)
alongside the not-so-famous but
nevertheless critically acclaimed likes
of Metro Special Edition (11 th July)
led by trumpeter Randy Brecker and
drummer Dave Weckl, and Kansas
City Memories (18 th July), a group

participated in the filming and the
recording of the soundtrack for the movie

In the evening of Thursdays 10 th ,
17 th and 24 th July, the festival has

show entitled Portraits, Moments,
Places: Jazz in the Region of Valencia

EL CIRCO DEL SOL LLEGA A ALICANTE
THE CIRQUE DU SOLEIL COMES TO ALICANTE
El Circo del Sol montará su estructura
en la explanada ferial del barrio de
Rabasa y pondrá en escena su espectáculo
Quidam, que ya han disfrutado
ocho millones de espectadores. Su hilo
argumental gira en torno a la transformación
de un mundo anónimo en un lugar
de esperanza. El Circo del Sol actuará
en Alicante desde el 24 de julio hasta
finales de agosto, gracias a las gestiones
de las concejalías de Cultura y
Fiestas del Ayuntamiento de Alicante.
El Circo del Sol llegará a Alicante procedente
de Málaga y arrastrará una
caravana de 60 camiones, con más de
800 toneladas de diverso material. Un
total de 50 artistas y 80 técnicos, con
el apoyo de unas 200 personas que
contratarán en Alicante de forma temporal,
darán vida al espectáculo Quidam,
uno de cuyos números, protagonizado
por quince acróbatas de Ucrania ya
obtuvo el Clown de Oro en el Festival
de Circo de Montecarlo.
El Circo del Sol es una compañía conocida
mundialmente. Nació en Canadá,
en 1984, de la mano de un grupo de
artistas callejeros. Los espectáculos del
Circo del Sol son admirados internacionalmente
por sus sorprendentes
actuaciones, donde resalta la creatividad,
la acrobacia, la escenografía y los
efectos logrados con la música, la iluminación
y un vestuario creado para
cada ocasión. En resumen, el atractivo
del Circo del Sol es que ha renovado
las reglas del circo tradicional, las
ha modernizado y lo ha acentuado como
un espectáculo total.
El Circo del Sol actuará en Alicante
como parte de una segunda gira europea,
para la que han elegido a un reducido
número de ciudades. Realizará las
funciones bajo la gran carpa azul y
amarilla. El precio de las entradas oscila
entre 35 y 70 euros.

The famous circus will set up on the
showground esplanade in the Rabasa,
Alicante to stage Quidam, a show that
has already enthralled 8 million spectators.
The main thread of the show revolves
around the transformation of an
anonymous, faceless world into a place
of hope. The Cirque du Soleil will be
performing in Alicante from 24 th July to
the end of August thanks to negotiations
by the departments for Culture and
Festivals at the Alicante City Council.
The Cirque du Soleil will be coming
to Alicante from Málaga with an entourage
that includes 60 trucks and over 800
tons of various props and equipment. A
total of 50 artistes and 80 technicians
will be supported by some 200 people
hired on temporary contracts in Alicante,
and together they will give life to Quidam,
which includes a number performed by
15 acrobats from the Ukraine and
awarded the prestigious Golden Clown
at the Montecarlo Circus Festival.
The internationally acclaimed Cirque
du Soleil was created in Canada in
1984 by a group of street performers,
and their shows are now admired around
the globe. Their breathtaking and original
performances are highly creative, thanks
to superb stage management, musical
effects, lighting and a wardrobe created
specially for each show. In short, the secret
to the Cirque du Soleil’s success is that
they have rewritten the rules of traditional
circus, revamping them to create a fully
blown show.
The Cirque du Soleil will be performing
in Alicante as part of a second European
tour, which sees them visit a select
number of cities, performing under a huge
blue and yellow big top. Tickets cost
between 35 and 70 euros.
