Innergex and Mitsubishi Power to
provide 425 MWh of battery storage in
South America
ACERA's member company, Innergex Renewable Energy, awarded Mitsubishi
Power a contract for the installation of two commercial-scale battery energy
storage system ("BESS") projects with its "Emerald" storage solution at the
Salvador and San Andres photovoltaic solar parks in the Atacama Desert in
northern Chile, totaling 425 MWh. These projects will be dedicated to solar
energy and will transfer renewable energy to peak demand hours, storing
energy during the day and supplying it at night.
The 5-hour BESS projects are the first solar farm storage projects in Chile, and
Mitsubishi Power's first in South America. Both projects are expected to come
online in 2023 and contribute to Chile's national decarbonization goals of 80%
clean electricity by 2030 and 100% by 2050. Los dos BESS en conjunto,
representan una inversión de $US 128.5 millones (166.6 millones $CAN). Los
proyectos se beneficiarán de los pagos por capacidad y, adicionalmente,
venderán energía en el mercado comercial, permitiendo a las instalaciones
atender las necesidades del mercado.
Chile recognizes the importance of energy storage in Energy Policy 2050 and
is currently developing new and more advanced capacity regulations that will
also recognize the valuable contribution of battery energy storage systems to
grid reliability and compensation. These capacity payments represent an
important component of the total revenue stream of the BESS system.
Coordinator made his Public Account
With the presence of the Minister of Energy, Claudio Huepe, the
National Electric Coordinator held its Public Account 2022, in which
the president of the agency, Juan Carlos Olmedo, made a balance of
the situation of the country's electricity system, as well as the
achievements reached by the entity and the challenges that are
foreseen for this year.
The event, which was also transmitted virtually, was attended by the
members of the Board of Directors and the main executives of the
organization, as well as representatives of trade associations, including
ACERA, municipalities, academia, coordinated companies,
consultants, public agencies and foreign delegations.
Likewise, the president of the Coordinator announced the work
being carried out by the organization, with a view to having a
"Roadmap for an Accelerated Energy Transition", which will be
presented to the public soon, and whose objective is to analyze
scenarios and define actions that allow the exit of fossil fuel-based
power plants, to achieve a 100% participation of renewable energies,
starting in 2030.
In the framework of the Public Account, the Coordinator's
Sustainability Report 2021 was also released, which can be
