Let’s Have Harmony! 7
Harmony recently celebrated its 125th anniversary
with a celebration in 2021. An all-school reunion
is set for July 2, 2022, honoring the alumni from
Harmony and Fillmore Central.
The community origins begin with the small village of
Greenfield, once located just south of the current location. The
settlement boasted a post office, church, school and several
businesses. However, when businesses heard a railroad would
soon be built north of town, they abandoned Greenfield to
establish the new town site by the railroad.
A popular Harmony legend explains how Harmony got its
name. A group of citizens had gathered to decide on a name
for the new village, but a heated argument arose with some
residents wanting one name and others wanting another.
Finally, one gentleman, wanting to be a peacemaker and bring
an end to the bickering, exclaimed, “Let’s have Harmony here!”
Another man quickly piped in, “Well, that’s an idea! Let’s call it
Harmony.” And, so they did.
8 Let’s Have Harmony!
Work on the new railroad was started in the spring of
1879 and the first train came through the new town site in
December of that same year. The next few years were filled
with growth and prosperity with new homes and businesses
expanding the boundaries of the small village. The town was
officially incorporated in 1895.
Agriculture was the main industry, but manufacturing and
commerce quickly added to the dynamics of town. Tourism
opportunities also emerged throughout the past century.
Niagara Cave was discovered in 1924 when three boys
tracked some lost pigs through an opening in the ground. Eight
years later, three local men went back down into the crevice
and explored the caverns to discover beautiful formations and
an underground waterfall. The cave was then developed and
opened for public tours in 1934.
The Amish came to the Harmony area early in 1974 from
Ohio as many were seeking a less populated place to start
a new Amish community. They were impressed by wooded
timber areas for building and for fuel, springs and streams
for animals and cooling milk, small acreage farms with good
soil and good drainage. Since that time, the community has
grown significantly and the Amish farmers and craftsmen have
become an integral part of the Harmony community.
The Harmony-Preston Valley Recreational Trail was
established in 1998, extending to Harmony from the Root
River Trail in Preston. This coming year, another extension is
being designed to take bikers to Niagara Cave and the Iowa
border. Construction of that trail is expected to be completed
in 2023.

Visit the Amish of Harmony
The Harmony area is home to Minnesota’s largest Amish
settlement. Over 100 Old Order Amish families live in the
countryside near Harmony.
The Amish of Harmony arrived in the area in the early 1970s and
settled just east of Harmony. Since that time, the settlement has
grown and expanded further east towards Canton and Mabel and
north towards Preston and Lanesboro. Another settlement has
more recently been established west of Harmony near Granger.
Amish people primarily make their living through farming,
construction and by making and selling goods. These unique items
include baskets, furniture, jams, rugs, quilts, baked goods and much
more. Many Amish families can be found selling their wares at local
farmers’ markets or on their farms.
Visitors to Harmony can visit select Amish farms and merchants
by taking a tour through Amish Tours of Harmony, located in
BReaKeRs in the Village Green. The tour company offers comfortable
van tours, guided tours in one’s own vehicle or can provide a guide
for a bus group.

Coming soon to Harmony
A six-mile trail extension of the Harmony-Preston Valley State Trail
is expected to be completed in the summer of 2023. The extension
will leave Harmony and go south to Niagara Cave and the Iowa
border. The city of Harmony and its park board are constructing a
splash pad in the trailhead park. The water feature will have various
nozzles and water spouts to play in.

The Harmony-Preston Valley
State Trail starts right behind
Harmony’s Visitor Center. It
connects Harmony to the Root
River Trail system with over 60
miles of recreational trail! This DNR-maintained trail allows
biking, walking, cross-country skiing, hiking and rollerblading.
The trail travels through lovely countryside and amongst the
wildlife, passing through a variety of wooded areas, pastoral
farm sites, rolling hills and near spring-fed Camp Creek.
The trail head features a picnic shelter, playground, parking
lot and visitor center.
Cave Exploration
Harmony is located within the Driftless Area of the Upper
Midwest. This region was not covered by glaciers during the most
recent ice age over 12,000 years ago. As a result, the landscape in
our region is unique from the rest of the state. The countryside is
rich with bluffs, rolling hills, springs, creeks, sinkholes and caves.
Two main caves are Niagara Cave, just south of Harmony, and
Mystery Cave, located in nearby Forestville State Park.
Niagara Cave is consistently rated one of the top-10 caves in the
United States.
• One of the nation’s most
fascinating and distinctive
geological attractions!
• One-hour guided tour
spans a mile of
underground passageways.
• Discover fossils over 450
million years old.
• View cave formations both
delicate and massive.
• Experience the roar of an
underground waterfall.

Karst Interpretive Site
The Harmony Visitor
Center is open to the
public from April through
October. Inside the
visitor center, one can
explore exhibits about
karst and see fossils
found in the area. A short
hike on the Harmony-
Preston Valley State
Trail, which starts right
behind the visitor center,
leads to the Harmony
Karst Interpretive Site. The sinkhole, highlighted at the site, is a
good example of the unique geological make-up of southeastern
Minnesota. Three drainage holes are featured as a point of interest
with a viewing deck located above them. There are also several
educational signs located throughout the sinkhole, explaining the
geology of the sinkhole, how it was formed and why it is important
to protect sinkholes and keep them clean.
Karst geological areas are rare, with one of about four being
located here in southeastern Minnesota. Other areas of similar
geology are located in Missouri, Florida and Kentucky.
In a karst geological area, the limestone is very close to the
surface, and heavy rain and moisture can cause the limestone to
collapse, making a sinkhole.

running through it, the Root and Upper Iowa
rivers are close by! Both rivers have nearby
starting points for canoeing, kayaking and
tubing. The Root River offers many activities,
including some of the best trout fishing in the
United States.
Fishing & Wildlife
Only a few miles from Harmony are some of the finest trout
streams in the state. The Root River winds its way through the
area, offering ample fishing opportunities for all.
Many types of trout are found and stocked in the streams close
to Preston, such as brown trout, wild brook trout, brookies, rainbow
trout, small mouth bass, channel catfish, rock bass, sunfish, crappies
and rough fish. Fishing licenses can be purchased in Preston.
Harmony and the Fillmore County area are a hunter’s
dream! Our wooded hilly areas, streams and creeks are teeming
with wildlife. Hunters and photographers will find white-tail deer,
wild turkey, pheasants, partridge, grouse, gray fox, red fox, coyotes,
raccoons, woodchucks, squirrels, weasels, badgers, beavers and

The third playground is located in our North Park, next to the golf
course. Parents can enjoy a round of golf at the 9-hole Harmony
