APPLYING FOR COLLEGE CAN DEFINTLEY BE AN INTIMIDATING PROCESS.... WE DECIDED
TO INTERVIEW FIVE DIFFERENT COLLEGE STUDENTS TO FIND OUT THEIR EXPERIENCES
WITH APPLYING!
HERE'S THE QUESTIONS THAT THEY ANSWERED!
WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRETY OF THE
APPLICATION PROCESS?
DID YOU SUBMIT YOUR SAT SCORES, IF SO WHAT WERE THEY?
HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT TACKLING THE ESSAY COMPONENT OF THE APPLICATION?
WHAT WERE THE EXTRACURRICULARS YOU TOOK PART IN?
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR THOSE GOING THROUGH THE APPLICATION PROCESS
NOW?
WHAT’S ONE THING ABOUT YOUR SCHOOL THAT MADE YOU HAPPY ABOUT YOUR
CHOICE?
INTERVIEWS CONDUCTED BY TALIA BOCK
INTERVIEW WITH MICHELLE MELARA
UCF
1) Finding the time in my busy schedule to apply to schools
and scholarships.
2) I did and I got a 1250
3) I had different teachers and staff critique my essays and
I would fix the essay off the feedback they gave. I also am
not really good at writing myself so I made use of help
around me.
4) I did volunteer work at holy family Catholic Church, lake
forest park assisted living, cats and dogs forever, humane
society, and worked at ozzys automotive repair. I also did
dance for two years of highschool and worked at botanical
gardens for a bit.
5) I would say time management will be the most help
through the application process as well as once you get into
college. Let your recommenders know that you would like a
recommendation from them at least a month in advance. I
had many teachers say they could not because the time
frame was too short as I had asked them two weeks before
the deadline. I would also say to use common app for free
applications for those who aren’t able to pay for application
fees. Also for those who have reduced lunch/ or have low
family income, I would contact the school and ask about
getting an application fee waived. This helped me an
incredible amount!
6) I love the culture at UCF , with so many different types
of people from all over the world. There are so many events
going on and so many different opportunities to meet new
people and network with professionals that are in your field
INTERVIEW WITH AMBER ABUD-ROMERO
BARNARD
1)I think the biggest challenge throughout my college application
process was having no one to ask for help. As a first-generation
student, no one in my family had gone to college so it was
daunting when I started the common app. Whether it was filling
out extensive paperwork like the FASFA, or just having someone
read my college essay, I was completely on my own. Thankfully
there are a ton of online resources that I used (I love college
vine!!).
2)I didn’t submit my SAT scores to my Top 20 schools (Ivies, NYU,
and UChicago) because I was battling a chronic illness my junior
year. I made sure to explain that in detail in my application. I
didn't want my admissions committee to think I was avoiding
taking the SAT or ACT. Most of my friends at Columbia/Barnard
submitted their scores if they didn't have extenuating
circumstances that prevented them from testing.
3)Starting my common app essay was the hardest part of the
application process. It's hard to write about something that
represents you as a person. A month before applications went live,
I made a list of ideas in the notes app. Some of my ideas included:
My Grandma’s kitchen table and how I felt at home more in
New Jersey than in Florida because that table shaped my core
memories
The game Mancala and how it taught me to think ahead in
the game and in life.
It took me about a month to come up with my final topic and I
ended up rewriting it about three times. I settled for writing about
my chaotic childhood and how I felt out of control in life. One tip I
like to tell everyone is to “show not tell” when writing your essays.
I like to break my work into parts so I wrote a paragraph a day.
After that, I didn't look at my essay for a week and then began the
editing process. Unfortunately, I procrastinated a lot and finished
the day my applications were due (please avoid this!!).
INTERVIEW WITH AMBER ABUD-ROMERO
BARNARD
4)I joined a bunch of clubs and volunteer organizations in
high school. I think I had about 400 hours of volunteer
work in total. I was a Biology tutor, NHS member,
Youth Ambassador for the National Psoriasis Foundation,
Myelin Content Reviewer for the International Youth
Neuroscience Association, Hospice volunteer at VISTAS,
Band member, Medical Academy at Treasure Coast High,
and Volunteered at the Good Samaritan Free Health
Clinic.
5) For those going through the application process, take a
deep breath. It's going to be okay! I strongly advise you
to pace yourself and set certain days to just get your
application out of the way. If you’re applying to numerous
colleges that require supplementals, make sure you have
enough time to truly show your personality in those
questions too. I think supplementals give people an extra
chance to showcase themselves to admissions.
6)Oh my god, I don’t think I can choose one thing about
Columbia University that made me happy. I love
everything about it. The city, the people, the classes, it
was my dream school so it is a dream come true. Right
now, my favorite thing is Butler Library. It has beautiful
architecture and it reminds me of Harry Potter. It's a
great place to study... or cry while writing a paper.
INTERVIEW WITH SARAH WOUTERS
FSU
1. I think the biggest challenge I faced was actually
starting the essay. I was really overwhelmed by the list
of prompts and all the things I felt I needed to write
about for colleges to like me! Even after deciding on a
prompt, I wrote probably 6 different versions of my
essay before finding which creative route best
represented me! It was hard finding the right words but
it all worked out with some time and focus!
2. I submitted my SAT scores after my first attempt,
although I wish I’d taken the test a few more times
before doing so. My score was 1370 overall (710 on
reading/writing and 660 on math).
3. After selecting my prompt from the approved list, I
wrote a simple bulleted list of all the points I wanted to
discuss. While the essay should play to your strengths,
it’s also important to show how you handled adversity
and unexpected challenges in relation to the topic. I
started writing it as if it was just a professional e-mail
simply to get the main ideas on the page. Then, I went
back and added some creative flair; I took a creative
writing approach when editing. Admissions officers
don’t want to read the same boring essays over and
over, so find a way to put a unique spin out of your
experiences! I made sure to have trusted teachers,
family members, and former students read my essays
and give honest criticism. Getting an outside
perspective, especially from students from my dream
college, was essential to my revision process.
INTERVIEW WITH SARAH WOUTERS
FSU
4. I was heavily involved in extracurriculars and
student leadership throughout high school. I was in
the marching band, concert band, choir, dance
department, National Honor Society, and Criminal
Justice Academy.
5. Be patient with yourself! The essay isn’t going to
going to be perfect on the first draft. Your SAT/ACT
scores may not be what you hoped for on the first try.
If you plan ahead, you’ll have plenty of time to
enhance specific aspects of your application well
before the deadline. Remember that you have
something unique to offer these colleges, so be proud
of what you’ve accomplished so far! Don’t stress
about being someone you’re not just to get into a
school. Take pride in your progress, setbacks, and
goals, then channel that into making an authentic
application essay! Admissions officers will know if
you let the stress of applying get to you, so relax and
own it! Also, I highly recommend reaching out to
someone who was accepted to your dream school(s)
for more specific feedback!
6. I am so thrilled to attend Florida State University
because I know I’m receiving the best instruction for
my major. All of the criminology faculty have been
incredibly helpful and supportive, especially during
the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s empowering knowing I
have an army of highly qualified instructors there to
guide me towards my own goals.
INTERVIEW WITH GEANPAUL OJEDA
NYU
1. For me the biggest challenge was writing my essays. I
applied to a lot of schools and I just found myself lacking
motivation to complete my essays and meet deadlines.
Of course I made it through but it was definitely an
overwhelming time, and I think I especially became more
worried when I had to wait longer than some of my peers
for my first acceptance. Even though the schools I
applied to had different timelines than those of others, I
still felt a lot of pressure since I felt everyone was just
looking at me and expecting me to have already got an
acceptance to a school.
2. I chose not to submit SAT scores solely for the reason
that I lacked the opportunity to actually retake it due to
COVID-19. I was somewhat satisfied with my scores, but
I really wish I could have retaken it to boost my SAT
scores but that’s just how life is sometimes
3. I just spoke my truth and tried to be as personable as
possible in my essays so that the admissions committee
can have a better insight into who I am besides my stats.
When it came to writing “Why this College” essays
(when a school asks you why do you want to attend our
school), I tried to do research into the programs the
school offered in relation to my major and used that to
help me write my essays. Always avoid talking about
prestige or recognition of a school, it’s shallow and won’t
get you anywhere.
.4. I took part in student council/government, National
Honor Society, and Unified Champions.
INTERVIEW WITH GEANPAUL OJEDA
NYU
5. I would say have patience and make
gradual progress. It can get stressful
working on your essays so maybe work
on another aspect of your application
or fill out your financial forms. Just
make sure you are making progress
and not leaving everything for the last
second cause that’s what will cost you
your acceptance.
6. I think the amount of opportunities
available to me has really made a
significant difference. Every school has
opportunities but I think NYU is
definitely set apart from the pack with
the alumni networks in place and, of
course, being located in the city. I
know that no matter what I want to
pursue, there is some opportunity
there for me to take advantage of.
INTERVIEW WITH EMILIA ZARAGOZA
UF
1. The biggest challenge I faced throughout
the college application process was figuring
everything out on my own. Unlike others in
my class, I didn’t have a college advisor or an
older sibling who’d gone through the process
before and could guide me. I had to teach
myself how to use common app, how to write
my essay, etc.
2. I did submit test scores to all the
universities I applied to, and I got a 1400.
3. It took me a very long time to think of what
I wanted to write my college essay about. I
felt like I had writer’s block for months,
because you need something that’s unique to
you and not too cliche. I saw a technique on
Tik Tok where you write 5 things that interest
you, wait 5 minutes, write 5 more things, and
so on, until you have a list of 15. Finally, after
this, I came to a topic that I was able to write
a really interesting essay on.
4. For extracurriculars, I was varsity swim
captain, varsity softball captain, swam club
swim, a member of NHS, founder of knitting

club, was a lifeguard, Starbucks
barista, interned at a law firm, had
over 500 volunteer hours, completed
the IB diploma program and
graduated as salutatorian with a 6.5
weighted and 4.0 unweighted GPA.
5. For those going through the
process, I’d say don’t worry too much
about any one particular component
of the application. Instead, realize
that schools have a holistic process
where they view each applicant
overall as a whole.
6. I’m a freshman at the University of
Florida now, and I’m really happy with
my decision. My favorite part is how
many resources the school has to
prepare you for a successful future,
such as the amazing professors,
career center, and so much more.

ANOTHER GREAT WAY TO FIND YOUR STYLE IS BY REFLECTING ON

NANA OSAKI, CRUELLA, AND EFFIE STONEMAN.
FINDING YOUR STYLE MAY EVEN BE AS SIMPLE AS WATCHING
FASHION BASED TIK TOK VIDEOS!
I find it a lot harder to go thrifting with a specific piece in mind rather
than a specific style. With a style in mind, you are open to different
silhouettes and patterns that you may have otherwise closed your
mind off to. Your brain is able to think of unique pairings that fit within
your closet rather than hitting copy and paste from your Pinterest
board.
Don’t buy something just because its designer, you’ll regret it!...Remember, an ugly
Gucci shirt is still an ugly shirt!
Sometimes a cheaper alternative is just as good. Sometimes the price tag CANT be
justified. A $200 pair of tights may not be worth it when they're prone to ripping in
the first couple of wears.
Buy items because they fit your style and you can justify the price. Just because
those zebra boots went on sale for $200 doesn’t mean you’ll wear them, and if you
didn’t wear them, how much of a deal did you really get?... On the flip side, if your
bank account can’t afford to get those amazing red Valentino boots, maybe it wasn’t
meant to be!... for now!
Buying staples is reasonable but it’s also good to be on the lookout for funky pieces
to add your collection. Don’t get me wrong, a solid black JACQUEMES top might be
the best quality top you own, but did we really just spend 400 dollars on a PLAIN
BLACK TOP?… I HOPE NOT!
Why Is Self-Love Important?
A Guide Towards Self-Love & Awareness
Article written by: Lucia Quesada
In dealing with the journey towards self-love, I've began to notice new changes
along the way with myself and my way of thinking. For some people, "why is
self-love important" is one of the most common question that seems to pop up
when beginning to grasp the concept of why it's supposed to be applied in
life. When thinking about that question, i’ve begin to notice that self-care and
patience is driven to help us become better versions of ourselves and our mental
health starts to evolve on a better spectrum than usual. Of course some days are
better than others but as a person, we reflect on who we are and acknowledge that
sometimes it’s okay not to be okay. So here’s a guide on how to cultivate a
satisfied lifestyle and most importantly, an amazing relationship with ourselves.
Importance of Self-Love continued...
At times, we often beat ourselves up whether it
was failing a test, creating bad habits like
procrastinating or being unproductive
throughout the day. We become so tense and
hard on ourselves because we desire to perfect
something and get it right the first time rather
than letting go and knowing that we make
mistakes as humans. I’ve been there myself
quite a few times and it took a huge strain on my
mental health and how badly I criticized myself
for those mistakes. However, over the years we
begin to realize that life is filled with mistakes
and from those lessons, we become stronger and
more aware. If this sounds like you, here’s a
good tip to follow through: shift your focus off
of being “perfect” and acknowledge your
strengths. Knowing that it’s bad for you and
you’re constantly beating yourself up because of
it, is one of the major issues that takes away
your sense of worth and satisfaction within
yourself. Taking from this, you need to take the
time to recognize your mistake and alter your
thoughts and tendencies into acceptance.
Imagine yourself getting stressed over a test that
you took the time to study but didn’t score well
on- instead of freaking out over the bad score,
you’re more focused on the fact that you spent
time studying and you put in your best effort on
the exam. You start to shift your focus on the
positive and allow yourself to make mistakes.
Another way to tackle this problem is to create
reasonable goals to set achievable and smart
standards through the week, month, or year.
Learning to set goals allows for a less- stressed
and more confident ability to reach your goals in
a realistic matter.
We often have those days where we don’t feel
comfortable under our skin and it deprives us from
socializing, going out, and self-worth overall. I
understand how difficult it could be and the way it
influences our minds and how we think of
ourselves which often leads to comparison of
others. Whether it’s having the perfect clothes,
having the perfect body, having the perfect hairthe
practice of self-love and confidence is
challenging if we keep negatively influencing our
minds that we’re not worth any of it. The finest
things about self- love is the fact the we don’t
change for the approval of others. We love
ourselves the way we are and we seek to improve
ourselves a lot more than just physical, such as our
mental health and mindset. To tackle the journey
towards finding ourselves, we play a pivotal role in
a creating healthy goals and introducing ourselves
towards improvement and challenge along the way.
From a positive perspective, we aim to understand
how much effect the changes and habits we
contributed to our lives have on the relationship we
have with ourselves. In terms of how to find our
worth, confidence, and embrace the things that
make us unique, we learn to create a safe space for
ourselves and others. In order to practice the
concept of self- love, take a deep breath and
celebrate the fact that you want to better yourself
and seek improvement- whether it’s mentally,
emotionally, physically or just improve in all
aspects. Your growth is what shows that you did
this for yourself, no matter how long the progress
is, your strength is shown and that’s something to
be proud of. Here’s some practice tips and habits to
cultivate an optimistic view on your life and most
importantly, yourself:
GIFTING MY DAD: A
SEASONS TROUBLE
HERLANDA MARCELIN
My dad is celebrating his birthday soon, so I need to
brainstorm gift ideas. I realized, as I do every year, I have
no clue of what to get him. Of course, he has likes and
dislikes. After all, he’s quite vocal on that. However, he does
not have hobbies, so what do I get him? Mind you, I had a
list of last-minute gift ideas for someone else that I drafted
that same day. Cue the problem...
Here I’m thinking, it’s just me and the
men in my life are just lame, but lo and
behold, it's not just me. Everyone I have
spoken to agrees. Of course, this is just
the validation of my tiny little world, but
it had me thinking. Is marketing focused
mostly towards women causing men to be
gifted less?
Because I clearly have free time, I decided
to hold a short, casual interview with
several people (10) on this topic. I gave
them a minute to talk about what they
would give their father “if his birthday
was the next day” and I did the same
thing, but for their mother. I also asked
them why they thought one list ended up
being longer than the other.
In the end, the gift list for the mothers
were more extensive and personal than
the list for the fathers. In about a third of
the interviews, people recommended an
item for their dad's work. However, this
was never the case for their mom. As for
the reason, participants claimed women
are more open with their wants than men.
Most people didn't note marketing as a cause in
their response. Not knowing what to give their
father was a result of more societal causes.
Some people did bring up that it was strange
that they never have the same trouble for males
who are children or teens. Kids always want
stuff. It makes me wonder about why there is
such a difference due to age.
THE WHY
“For guys, you think of more practical
things” P1 and 2
“For women, you get things they want” P1

Pride and Prejudice
We Were Liars
BY STEPHANIE OJITO
PERSUASION VS PRIDE
AND PREJUDICE
Pride and Prejudice is one of Jane Austen’s most popular books. Read both among fans
of literary classics and book nerds who have nothing better to do with their time than
enjoy and analyze how romance took place approximately two hundred years ago. I am
one of those nerds, and I will now be diving into the difference between Persuasion and
Pride and Prejudice.
A very important thing to keep in mind is the typical arguments for both. Some fans of
Austen claim that among her 6 works, pride and prejudice is the best simply because it's
charismatic and popular. Meanwhile, most of the arguments about Persuasion claim it is
uncharacteristic of Austen, that her other works critique social life among the rich while
also providing a fun and witty romance. Persuasion goes into the characters' individual
feelings. Due to the fact that it is a second chance romance, we get to see a lot of regret
from both Fredrick Wentworth, the love interest, and Anne Elliot, our protagonist. After
Anne rejects Fredrick for his lack of funds and maturity thanks to a friend's advice, she
sees him come back from war eight years later as a new man. Now she must witness
him court the woman around her. Which is why, you can assume from what I previously
said about the nature of Jane Austen’s works that it is very uncommon to find a romance
that starts not only after they had already met each other, but had already tried their
chance at love, contrary to the typical theme of witty and sweet romance.
Pride and Prejudice is the complete opposite of Persuasion, the only
similarity being their lifestyles as well off families and their decreasing
funds as a result of their financial carelessness. It is also one of her most
read works and is a very well known story, even by those who have not
read it. The story entails Mr. Darcy, a rich man who most consider antisocial
and arrogant and Elizabeth Bennet a bright and joyful woman who
misjudged him, much like everyone else. To finish this book I sat myself
on the couch at 4 am on a summer night and sped through the ending.
Personally, Persuasion has always been more enjoyable to read, but that’s
besides the point. In this work Austen focuses on character development
and prejudice as the title implies. How the prejudice of those around
Elizabeth and her own, manage to cloud her mind and inhibit her senses
to see who Mr. Darcy truly is as a person. Moreover, the romance is as
described for her other works, witty and romantic. We don't see the
angst from Persuasion like we do in Pride and Prejudice.
Both books have characteristics of Austen’s works that make them
unique stories. By claiming that my favorite of her works so far is
Persuasion, some may say I don’t even like her since it is not her usual
style. I will agree to disagree.

<<< If you are a newbie reader and do not know where to start, you should give
this book a read, trust me when I say this, you will not be disappointed. Though I
am not a fan of slow books, it quickly picks up speed as you progress. Each detail
gives insight into the characters' minds and allows you to make a connection with
them. Every time you believe you finally have a grasp of what is going on, BAM,
more information is revealed, and you begin to contemplate it all. I will say no
more to avoid spoiling the plot but let me just say that the ending left me, and
everyone who has read it in a state of shock as each aspect leading up to the fact
finally clicked into place. I give this book a 10/10 rating, so if you want to be left
as speechless as I was, read this book. >>
HERLANDY MARCELIN
The novel We Were Liars is a story of the Sinclair family, who on the outside, may
seem perfect, but are tainted and filled with many secrets. Each year, the Sinclair
We Liarsfamily
gathers on their private island, and during summer 15, an accident leads to a
brain injury. However, in summer 17, she is given the opportunity to visit, in which
she tries to fill in the gaps of her knowledge. To her dismay, the more she digs, the
more secrets are revealed.
<< First and foremost, I’m going to start with a rating of 6/10. This book begins
slowly but catches speed as the reader is left trying to fill in gaps that even the
narrator does not know. Though this added to the experience for some, it
undoubtedly led to a botchy plot. Moreover, the writing style was confusing to
many, and quite pointless to put in plainly. Needless to say, I enjoyed being part of
the reveal of the many tragic family secrets that undeniably provided intel for the
mysterious summer 15. In closing, readers will either love or hate the ending. You
will love the turn of events, or wish the book took a different turn. I would
recommend giving this a read, so you are able to form your own opinions. >>
FIVE WAYS TO OVERCOME A
CREATIVE BLOCK
B R I A N N A L O R I S T O N
Writers, artists, musicians, and others who take an
interest in the creative arts, all have incredibly diverse
talents. For instance, writers depict scenes through the
clever use of figurative language and continuous
prose, while artists can create the same scene
physically or digitally by utilizing color theory and other
innovative methods. Although the creative arts seem
to be worlds apart, us creators actually have multiple
things in common. One is our aptitude for imagination
and creation, and another is the thing that completely
halts this process: creative blocks.
If you’re a creator, you’re no stranger to this term and
its effects. When you’re stuck in a creative block, it can
feel like you may never escape it, and your motivation
may deteriorate as a result. However, it is possible to
pull yourself out from this chasm of despondency. The
following are things I do to free myself from the
clutches of a creative block.
(CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE)
5. Ask for help
As an aspiring novelist, I often find myself stuck. Whether
it be developing a plot or character, or even coming up
with a title for my works, I get overwhelmed by my
plethora of ideas, or lack thereof. In instances like this, I
turn to my friends. More often than not, the people close
to you understand your intentions better than you do.
Even if they aren’t a creator in the same field as you, it’s
still beneficial to receive their opinions. With help from
friends, you might just discover an idea brimming with
potential.
4. Persevere
It may seem strange, but sometimes the only way to get
out of a creative block is to continue creating, despite not
knowing what to create. Even if you hate what you
produce, don’t criticize yourself for it. You can always go
back and improve it later.
3. Brainstorm
When you take the time to sit down and think exactly
about what you want to produce, your unearthed
intentions will eventually become clearer to you. Not only
is planning a great way to get out of a creative block, but
it is also an effective method of avoiding them entirely.
Personally, I prefer to use a notes app to type up my
thoughts before sitting down to write. You can even use
a pen and paper to record your ideas, or if you have a
retentive memory, you may not have to write your ideas
down at all.
(CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE)
2. Seek inspiration
Whenever I’m unsure of what to do next, I seek
inspiration in other forms of media. My
stimuluses range from books and movies to the
outside world and my interactions with others.
Don’t be afraid to use the works of others as a
reference; no idea is ever entirely original. Every
creative work out there has been inspired by
another.
1. Don’t think
Time and again, creative blocks are the result of
overthinking. Creators can get so wrapped up in
the result that they don’t even know where to
begin. So, take a break. To avoid burnout, step
away for a moment to take care of yourself.
Ensure that you eat and sleep properly, as your
health plays a major role in the creative process.
An idea will come to you naturally in due time.

FLOWERS AND

ARTICLE BY EWAN RENN
With technology being ever present in our lives, it has
become easier and easier to distance ourselves from reality.
The daily stresses of life can cloud our vision and funnel our
attention to the more mundane yet, necessary
responsibilities, we share. In the words of Ferris Bueller, “Life
moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a
while, you could miss it.” (One of my favorite 80’s movies btw,
I highly recommend it if you haven’t seen it.) This quote does
a fantastic job of summarizing what the photos are about:
dropping everything to take a closer look at the tiny aspects
of nature that make our ecosystem so intensely intricate
and wildly brilliant. These miniature works of art illustrate
the complex beauty, intelligence, and fragility of the natural
world, we so often tend to overlook. My intention with these
photos was to bring these wonderful micro-landscapes to
you, the reader, in a simple and easily accessible format. I
hope you enjoy them, and if you would like to see these
incredible sights in person, you should visit the Manatee
Observation and Education Center in Fort Pierce Florida. It is
host to many vibrant species of wildlife, has engaging indoor
and outdoor activities, and is the location of where these
photos were taken. Thank you!

GO GREEN FOR
HALLOWEEN
BY ZOE BROOKER
HALLOWEEN, JUST LIKE ANY HOLIDAY, IS PRONE
TO WASTE THAT WILL END UP HARMING THE
ENVIRONMENT. HALLOWEEN PRODUCES SOME OF
THE MOST WASTE OUT OF ALL THE HOLIDAYS
BECAUSE OF THE BILLIONS OF CANDY WRAPPERS
THROWN AWAY AND THE BILLIONS OF COSTUMES
PRODUCED ANNUALLY. TRICK OR TREATING HAS
BEEN A TRADITION SINCE SOMETIME IN THE 1930S
AND HAS BECOME MORE WIDESPREAD AS YEARS
GO ON.
THE REPERCUSSIONS OF TRICK OR TREATING
HAVE BECOME MORE NOTICEABLE AS MORE
PEOPLE PAY ATTENTION TO THE PLASTIC WASTE
THAT ENDS UP IN LANDFILLS.
WHILE I'M NOT SAYING THAT TRICK OR TREATING
NEEDS TO BE DISCONTINUED, PEOPLE NEED TO
BE MORE AWARE OF HOW THEY ARE DISPOSING
OF THE CANDY WRAPPERS AFTER HALLOWEEN.
UNFORTUNATELY, MOST CANDY WRAPPERS
CANNOT BE RECYCLED DUE TO THE MULTIPLE
MATERIALS USED TO CREATE THE WRAPPERS. THE
SUDDEN INFLUX OF PLASTIC CANDY WRAPPERS
OVERWHELMS THE LANDFILLS AND CAN TAKE
YEARS TO BREAK DOWN COMPLETELY.
CANDIES THAT COME IN SMALL CARDBOARD
BOXES, SUCH AS DOTS, NERDS, OR JUNIOR MINTS,
CAN BE GOOD ALTERNATIVES TO REGULAR
PLASTIC CANDY WRAPPERS. SEEKING OUT
SUSTAINABLE CANDY BRANDS WILL HELP THE
ENVIRONMENT.

Hello Pandemonium readers! My name is Kailee Larmon and I’m
playing Toffee in Lincoln Park Academy’s upcoming production of
Zombie Prom. I am unbelievably excited to put our art on stage,
and the cast has worked endless hours to get the show to where
it is now. We would love it if you joined us.
Zombie Prom is set in the 1950’s at Enrico Fermi High where a
tyrannical principle, Ms. Strict, keeps the students in line with
her ‘strict’ policies. A spunky senior, Toffee, falls in love with bad
boy, Jonny Warner. After being faced with the disapproval of her
parents, Toffee is forced to break up with Jonny. Due to this, he
rides his motorcycle into the local nuclear power plant. As
Toffee mourns the death of Jonny, her cries reach him from
beyond the grave. Jonny comes back from the dead as a zombie
in order to fight for Toffee’s love again while also trying to fight
his way back into the school so he can attend his senior prom.
Unfortunately, the principal keeps Jonny at bay while a scandal
reporter, Eddie Flagrante, tags along to get the latest scoop.
Come and join us for twists and turns as Jonny and Toffee go on
a journey that will change them forever.
Our show opens on October 21st at 6:30 PM, and our other show
times are October 22nd and October 23rd at 6:30 PM. This show
is important to the cast and production crew because not only
is this our biggest production yet, but we are also getting
Zombie Prom adjudicated. Every year, high schools across
Florida enter their mainstage shows to be judged by a panel
from the Florida State Thespians Festival. Eight mainstages are
chosen to perform at the Florida State Festival for thousands of
other thespians. It would be a huge accomplishment and honor
to make it to state festival, and your support in the audience
would be so important and encouraging for us! We hope you
join us at Enrico Fermi High on October 21st/22nd! For more
information regarding the show, tickets, and how you can
support us, visit our Instagram page @lpatheatre or our website,

KITTY LOVE
COMICAL HORROR FICTION
Last night really wasn’t anything out of the ordinary, unfortunately. I had been
asked to dinner by a rather attractive male: fit the image of a fine suitor perfectly.
I was minding my business, really, I was. Truthfully, I wasn’t planning on going to
dinner at all that night; I didn’t care to deal with men at that moment, but with
this man at my favorite bookstore, pushing open the copy of Dickinson’s works,
with jet-black hair, and a sly smirk, I figured I’d give him a chance. After all, he
would be the one paying… His cologne gave that much away; the sandalwood
happened to be a common denominator between the men who used money to
give them an edge. One may have called this the first red flag, but I tend to
overlook a couple flaws in a man, following none other than the simple “three
strikes, you’re out” protocol.
Like any other good man, looking for a woman to lie as an accessory on
his arm, he opened up the show like a typical flirt. As he made his way
over, his last season Fendi loafers clinked against the floor, indicating
that he didn’t even know his own shoe size…. typical. The clinking against
the floor was, oh so very noticeable as he practically ran circles in the
“horror” isle, quite ironic. The scene was sadly obvious, the typical “look
at my male bravado act”, where the man uses his height and the scent of
his cologne to get the poor old women to look at him with longing eyes.
It was sad really, but still, I gave him an opening. I figured the long batting
eyelashes and the tucking of the luscious brunette hair behind my ear
would do the trick. Spoiler Alert: It did.
(CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE)
Although, I was actually very pleased on how it went down; he complimented my
eyes, and even my smile, not the tight red dress that clung to my body. This is where
I had mistakenly thought that there would perhaps be no second strike. After the
compliment, I thanked him… knowingly waiting for the question ahead. Of course, it
would’ve been quite awkward if the question never came but like everything else, it
did, after the small talk and introductions of course. Ron was his name… no Rob, yes
Rob for Robert… I believe. And Robert had said he would be taking me to Renato’s
that night and that he would see me at eight, and that he did… quite a pricy bill that
Rob had to pay. In the moment, I of course obliged and saw myself out of the store,
but not before watching him purchase the collection of Dickinson. The same
collection that he would lie about later that night.
At 8:07 I arrived…. Perfectly on time. Rob was there in a rather dashing black tux
which I will say did happen to hold some light against my black dress. Again, I said he
held some light to the black dress, not the entire outfit with the white Dior gloves
and Westwood pearls.
As we walked through the restaurant, Robert, oh dashing Robert, handed a
whopping bill to the waiter, whilst murmuring “the usual table please”, and there it
was…a very unfortunate second strike for Rob. A very stupid one too, I mean
obviously Robert, I wasn’t born yesterday! Still, Robert had one more chance before
it was all over.
I’m skipping over a portion here, because it was just oh so very boring, filled with
the typical: “So tell me, what do you do for a living?”. However, I will say dinner was
rather delicious, and our young, charming antagonist here hadn’t entirely messed up,
so I figured I’d let him off the hook by leaving and cutting the night short, but he
insisted. He insisted we stay for some more wine and some “chocolate goodness” as
he called it. So, I did. I did because he insisted.
(CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE)
After a cup or four of chardonnay and fingers sticky with dark chocolate, there
began a fall into a very difficult night. Robert just had to mention her, our dear
old Dickinson. Now while I do like Dickinson, it wasn’t my love for the very dead
poet that caused the following events, it was Rob, none other than Rob.
I had asked him how he was liking his purchase from the shop earlier that day.
Now, he could’ve simply replied with “well I have yet to start it”, but Rob did not
know better.
Instead, he answered very confidently with “well I am very much enjoying it.
She happens to be one of my favorites. I am sure a smart woman like you must
have read her recent works.”
This caught my attention. “Recent?”, I replied...” Well how recent?”
“Oh, so very recent. She published just last year, have you not heard?”
Now I try to be polite, but this I did find the need to scoff at, and while from
the outside you may think that Robert was joking, he wasn’t. He was in fact
Lying! This also happens to be a very common characteristic in men, they often
seem to take lying as a tactic in conversation.
Feeling very kind that night, I began to get up and leave. Yet again, Robert
insisted! He seized my wrist and insisted that I stay a while longer. I of course
rejected, but this made Rob very angry.
“You will stay, as I have already paid. It is the least you can do.”
Rob thought he had bought me! And while he didn’t, I knew that the time for
my acting skills to arise had once again approached.
“Oh no! Have I offended you? That was never my attention! It’s just this
restaurant is oh so very crowded and it is making me quite anxious, I thought it
would be best if we got out of here, together of course.”
This, once again, had Robert’s brown eyes gleaming as he saw a beautiful woman
to undress with his eyes, reappear before him. He liked, no loved, my idea of
getting out of the restaurant. He grabbed my arm and off we were. I did not like
the arm grabbing, but he had already passed his strikes, I was done counting.
(CONTINUED ON N NEXT PAGE)
As we waited outside in the night’s crisp air, Robert informed me that a
car would pull around for us in about twenty minutes or so. I don’t know if
he was lying about this fact.
“Rob, do you think we can wait on the side of the building? Being this
close to the road seems quite dangerous.”
Robbie of course obliged. I suppose you could say this was his downfall.
Now the next events do get quite graphic, so I’ll keep it rather short, but
as I said, it was a very difficult night.
Robert and I were hand in hand in the middle of a dark alley, how typical.
He stared at every single part of my body, and I achingly pretended to
giggle trying my best to imitate the light rosy cheeks that one gets upon a
blush. After a few minutes of whatever that was, I became very bored,
and decided to initiate what needed to be done. I leaned it for a kiss, but
not before reaching into my purse. I had of course been one to make note
of the restaurant’s wonderful silverware set.
The silver gleaming of the full moon directly hit the glint on my knife
before the blade was driven into Robert’s body. He seemed quite
shocked, but there wasn’t much after that, I mean there really couldn’t
have been. Well, that was what I had thought, but Robert continued to
cause damage! His awful, gooey blood had spattered onto the poor kitty
that lied asleep in the alley way. Now I would’ve taken this kitty with me,
but I was allergic! Ugh, as I said, the night was very difficult. I will say that
I may be traumatized by it for quite some time. I had never thought to
look at for the kitties! I will have to keep that in mind for tonight’s
dinner!

FOR CREEPS
With Halloween quickly approaching, what better way to get into the
CLAY
spooky spirit than by engaging in some artistic activities! These polymer
clay charms are the perfect Halloween decoration whether you use them
as a keychain, a miniature figurine, an ornament, car decor, or anything
else you desire!
All that is needed for these adorably terrifying
buddies are blocks of clay, clay glaze, charm pins,
and an oven for baking. These materials can be
found at your local craft store.
Today, I would love to show you all a step-by-step
tutorial of how to bring this black cat to life!
SStart off by identifying the colors
needed. In this case, we will be using
black, green, and a lighter shade of pink.
Feel free to use any colors!
To start with the figure’s head, roll a decently sized ball and
adjust to your liking. Next, to create the ears, shape two pieces
of black clay in triangular shapes. Repeat this step with the
light pink clay using much smaller pieces.

Place the smaller pink pieces onto the larger black
ones. Then, attach these pieces onto the head. Take
another small piece of light pink clay and attach it
to the head’s center to create a nose.
Next, take two pieces of green
clay and attach them above the
nose. Repeat this step using
smaller black pieces to create
the pupils.
Set the figure aside to cool and then glaze (this is
also optional). HORRAY! Your black cat is
complete!
Take a charm pin and place it on top
of the head (this is completely
optional). Now it is ready to bake in
the oven! Bake at around 250 degrees
for ten minutes. You may have to
adjust the temperature or time… just
be mindful of not overbaking.

On September 27, 1969 the killer struck again, this time in a different
manner than he had in his previous crimes. His victims were Cecelia
Shepard and Bryan Hartnell, who had been out on a picnic at Lake
Berryessa at the time of the attack. The couple was approached by a man
wearing an executioners hood, holding a gun and a knife. The man tied
the couple up with rope and proceeded to stab them. He then walked to
Bryan’s parked car and wrote a message in pen including the date, time
of the attack, the words “by knife” and his signature crosses-circle. He
then called to report the attack from a payphone. Cecelia died as a result
of her injuries but Bryan survived and was able to describe his attacker to
police. Bryan described him as a “big guy”, about 6’2 and 200 lbs and
wearing an executioners hood.
The Zodiac Killer’s next victim was Paul Stine, a cab driver who was shot on
October 11th 1969, by the killer while he was a passenger in Stine’s car. A
witness saw the man fleeing from the scene and called police describing the
suspect as being a white man with reddish brown hair and glasses. The police
were not able to find the suspect and considered the murder a random
robbery until another letter was received by The San Fransisco Cronicle on
October 13th 1969. This letter from the Zodiac Killer stated that he was
responsible for killing the taxi driver and his statement was corroborated by a
piece of the victims shirt which he had taken off of his body and included with
his letter.

ARTICLE BY TALIA BOCK
Growing up, children tend to base their own self-worth and
beauty off their societal surroundings. If a child is taught that
beauty looks very different from themselves then it is no wonder
they grow up with self- esteem issues, for society has engraved a
very harmful and wrong expectation upon them. As we grow
older, we begin to realize that beauty is not defined by factors
such as race, size, ability, or class, but as a child you unfortunately
don’t realize these things.
A popular toy among children is dolls, one of the most famous
being the Barbie doll. Barbie is a skinny, blonde, white doll who
promotes the luxury lifestyle of living in a “dream house”. The
intention of the Barbie may just have been to create a fun
character for kids all over, but the lack of inclusivity played a role
in a much different outcome. Through toys like the Barbie doll, a
beauty standard was created, leaving children all over to feel
incompetent if they differed in looking like Barbie. While it is
true that Barbie has recently released a more diverse set of dolls,
consumers are still left to see the original Barbie as the main
figure.
One collection of dolls that seems to champion diversity is the Monster High collection.
In fact, the brands moto reads “everyone is welcome”. Each doll comes from a different
background and proudly sports their unique features. The company does not take the
“colorblind approach”, but rather embraces each doll’s attributes. No figure is placed
over another, and each doll is given an equal amount of spotlight and glamour. This
allows for children to see beauty in different people and realize that the term is not only
expansive but also subjective.
The Monster High collection is centered around a group of
teenagers who all come from “different walks of life”, but despite
their vast differences they are all able to attend school together and
form close knit friendships. Different styles, personalities, and
features are all promoted, enforcing the idea of self-confidence. The
ideal of inclusivity is not forced upon its consumers, but naturally
introduced, rightfully, demonstrating the idea that diversity is normal
and honestly amazing!
We live in a world where one kind of person is constantly pinned
against another, if we hope to find even the smallest solution to this
problem, the least we could do it promote diverse toys for children!

TW: Talks about Rape/Murder/Death
When one talks about Port St. Lucie, one thinks of it as just a suburban little town.
However, no one really talks, or even remembers, some of the scary history this city
has a record of. The Devil Tree is one of the not-so well-known stories to people
who have recently moved here. Even people that have been raised here have only
just heard of it and don’t really know the backstory of it!
In the early 1970’s, two 19-year-old girls went missing. Collette Goodenough and
Barbara Ann Wilcox were nowhere to be found. This was until two men found the
girls’ bodies hanging from the tree at Oak Hammock Park in a hangman’s noose.
They had decomposed and their skeletons were what was hanging. Gerard John
Schaefer was the serial killer responsible for this. It turns out that this happened 4
years before the bodies were found. In 1971, the ex-policeman had kidnapped the
girls. According to the reports he had gagged, raped, hung, and buried both ladies.
He would sometimes return to rape the dead, decomposing bodies.
After the word got out about what happened, there was a lot of devil worshipping
around Oak Hammock Park, especially by the tree. Because of the many satanic
rituals that were occurring, many citizens wanted to cut it down. In attempts to take
the tree down, they tried using chainsaws, but whenever they would get close to the
tree, the device mysteriously stopped working. Someone even tried using an axe!
However, the blade came off and killed the man that was chopping the tree down.
In 1992, a priest even held an exorcism by the tree. He put a cross around it that was
knocked over two years later.
Even nowadays, people claim to hear the screams of the poor girls that were
murdered. Others claim to have been chased by hooded figures or that there are
cold spots in that park.
Since Halloween is coming up soon, here are some tips if you do decide to go check
it out:
Don’t go alone: It’s already scary enough to hear about what happened to those poor
girls so try to go in groups instead of trios or just two people.
Don’t go at night: they have a curfew for the park but just don’t be that person… it's
not cool :/
Take a lot of precautions! Parks could be a little startling so be aware of your
surroundings, bring water. AND DON’T TALK TO STRANGERS!!
