The Singapore Lyric Opera (SLO) is the
flagship company of western opera in
SIngapore. As of the longest established in
this sector of the Arts, we engage renowned
international and local performers and
musicians under our repertoire. We aim to
promote and present western operas and
concerts not frequently performed in
Asia-Pacific for communities from all walks of
life in Singapore.
SLO strives to contribute to the development
of the opera scene in Singapore by playing a
key role in identifying, encouraging,
developing and nurturing current and future
generations of young artists and other
musical talents. SLO also champions the
professional growth of production and
technical personnel, by whom a
performance’s foundation is rooted.
Build and present a repertoire of works that
will expand the length and breadth of the
company artistically, yet immerse the
audience in the expanding aesthetics of
western theatrical interaction, without
compromising the artistic integrity and
passion rooted in the heart of SLO.

Terrence Toh is a Singaporean choral director and music educator. He holds
a Master of Music from Boston University and has studied under Dr. André de
Quadros, Dr. Owen Brian William and Dr. Diana R. Dansereau. Terrence’s
research interest is in the transformative and empowering powers of music,
music education and music-making.
In his international debut as a conductor, Terrence led his choirs to four gold
awards at the 21st Century International Choral Festival in Genting, Malaysia.
He also received the Best Interpretation Award and the Most Promising
Conductor Award in the same festival.
Choirs under his direction have won recognition and accolade at
international choral festivals such as the Festival of Songs in Olomouc, Czech
Republic; 11th & 12th Consorso Corale Internazionale in Riva Del Garda, Italy;
28th International Franz Schubert Choir Competition in Vienna, Austria; 3rd
International Krakow Choir Festival and 3rd Krakow Advent & Christmas
Choir Festival in Krakow, Poland. His choirs are also regularly featured in
Esplanade’s Limelight, a series that features the best school choirs in
Singapore.
Terrence is the founder, artistic and music director of EVOKX, a non-profit
community choir that engages youths in raising funds and public awareness
for social and charitable causes. He also serves as the Chorus Master of the
Singapore Lyric Opera. Terrence currently directs the choral programs at
Anglican High School, Anderson Secondary School, CHIJ Katong
Convent, Nanyang Junior College, Pasir Ris Secondary School, Jurong
Pioneer Junior College and Zhonghua Secondary School.

Dale Huang majored in Piano Performance at the Nanyang Academy of Fine
Arts, graduating with BA(Hons) Music, awarded by the University of Wales. A
finalist in the 9th International Chopin Piano Competition (General
Category) Tokyo, he also holds a Licentiate in Piano Performance (LRSM) with
Distinction, and was named Southeast Asia’s High Scorer that year (2006).
He accompanies the Singapore Lyric Opera Adult Chorus regularly, and also
collaborates with various choirs, solo instrumentalists as well as vocalists.
Dale has a keen interest in teaching and is well sought after as a piano
teacher. Hundreds of students have benefited immensely from his
pedagogical insights over the last two decades.

The Singapore Lyric Opera’s Adult Chorus, the backbone of the company’s
productions, is a leading chorus in Singapore, endeavouring to be a chorus of
excellent grade and going the mile to set the bar of standard and quality.
Since its establishment in 1990 and its first appearance in SLO’s inaugural
production Die Zauberflöte in 1991, the Chorus has actively performed in the
company’s productions, concerts, engagement programmes as well as
outreach programmes. Most recently in 2018, the Chorus staged their first
Chorus Concert, under the direction of our Chorus Master, Terrence Toh. The
Chorus Concert was a showcase a culmination of years of experience
performing opera chorus masterpieces by Verdi, Puccini, Mozart, Rossini,
Donezitti, Gounod, Mascagni, and many more. Although the Chorus is not
considered a full-time occupation, our passionate Chorus members commit to
understudy and playing roles in our performances.
SLO is always keen to explore new opportunities and welcome new members
to share the art and joy of music making with like-minded individuals who are
passionate about the opera and choral singing artform.

Based on the novella of the same title by Prosper Mérimée, Carmen is an opera by
French composer Georges Bizet and libretto written by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic
Halévy. It is set in southern Spain and tells the story of the downfall of Don José, a naïve
soldier who is seduced by the wiles of the fiery gypsy Carmen. José abandons his
childhood sweetheart and deserts from his military duties, yet loses Carmen's love to
the glamorous torero Escamillo, after which José kills her in a jealous rage.
Micaelä is a village maiden who is in love with Don José. She arrives in the mountains
where Don José is forced to lead his life with Carmen after. in search of him. Though
she is still in love with Don José and determined to rescue him from Carmen, she is
frightened as she is alone. As she continues to search for Don José, Micaelä prays for
courage – she sings the aria Je dis que rien ne m’épouvante and encourages herself not
to be afraid but also prepares for the confrontation with Carmen.

The duo that gave us Le nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni join forces once again to
bring us a wonderfully foolish but philosophical fable about love and faithfulness,
mistaken identities and the fickle heart, Così fan tutte is an opera by Wolfgang
Amedeus Mozart, and libretto written by Lorenzo Da Ponte. The title translates and
means “Women are like that”, which is quoted in the overture to the opera.
The plot takes place in the Bay of Naples in the 18th century. Deeply convinced of
women’s infidelity, the cynical Don Alfonso provokes his young friends Ferrando and
Guglielmo by impugning the constancy of their fiancées, sisters Dorabella and
Fiordiligi. To prove his assertion, Alfonso proposes the following plan to them: that they
tell their fiancées they are leaving for war, and then return dressed as Albanian soldiers,
ready to do anything to seduce the lonely fiancées.
Before they disguise themselves, the men pretend to sail off to war. And their fiancées
send them off, singing, Soave sia il vento, – "May the seas be calm and the winds
gentle." The sincerity of those wishes is made clear in Mozart’s music with its beautiful
orchestration and overlapping lines which paint a vivid picture of the rolling sea and
gentle winds as they bid farewell.

One of his most well-known and loved works, Die Zauberflöte is an opera of two acts
with music composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and libretto by Emanuel
Schikaneder in 1791. Set in a mythical land between the sun and moon, Die Zauberflöte
centers around Tamino, a young prince who enters a quest to win the hand of the
princess Pamina. Sarastro, the high priest of Isis and Osiris, leads Tamino through his
search for wisdom and symbolizes the power of reason.
Papageno is half-bird half-man, and is a bird catcher to the main antagonist, The
Queen of The Night. A clumsy and comical character, he laments and longs for a wife
to share love with. The smitten Pamina who is in love with Tamino, offers sympathy and
hope to Papegeno who longs for love and a wife as they share the duet Bei Männern,
welche Liebe fühlen; Together they reflect on the joys and sacred duties of marital love.
The aria O Isis und Osiris is performed by Sarastro in the first scene of Act 2 as he asks
for the high priests’ protection of the two lovers Tamino and Pamina; Tamino is ready
to undergo the ordeals that will lead him to enlightenment and acceptance, and
Sarastro invokes Isis and Osiris, and prays for Tamino’s success.
As the story progresses, the formerly hopeless Papageno is eventually granted a wife,
Papagena, who he is apparently unworthy of. Papegeno is advised to play his magic
bells to summon Papagena, who then appears. The comical duet Pa-Pa-Pa-Papageno
reunites the happy couple, as they stutter and make bird-like courting sounds while
they plan their future and dream of the many children they will have together.

The Pirates of Penzance is a comic opera in two acts, with music composed by
Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert.
The story concerns a young pirate apprentice named Frederic, who has come to
the end of his indentured period and is released from his apprenticeship to a
band of pirates. He meets Mabel, and the two young people fall instantly in love.
Frederic soon learns, however, that he was indentured by mistake and must
continue to remain apprenticed to the pirates. Bound by his own sense of duty,
Frederic's only solace is that Mabel agrees to wait for him faithfully.
