Finding the Right Box
The box is an incubator of my ideas, it provides parameters
and constraints that sparks my projects.
Being creative is about embracing obstacles, every
setback is an oppurtunity,
every limitation is a chance.
For each project presented in this portfolio, instead of
thinking outside the box, I try to find
the right box and fit into it.

THINK
AND
FIT
INSIDE
THE
BOX
Unlike artists, architects are obliged to take
account mandatory standards that inevitably
govern their professions. They confront every
project in a framework of cultural, social, political,
and economical constraints, manifested in this
case by ‘the box’. Central to an anchitect’s skill
set is the ability to take advantage and benefit
from the formidable constraints in a way that
runs counter to conformists.
Every project presented in this portfolio begins
from research and experimentation with the
intention to formulate a set of rules, strategies,
and ingredients inherent within the project. Seen
as a process of defining conceptual boundaries,
the box is an inculator of ideas and solutions,
rigorously governing the progess of creative
productions.

This proposal divides the courtyard around the two existing
bars, similar to how a street grid defines the plan of
a city. Major programs are scattered between walls and
onto different plazas, the shapes of which are determined
by the surrounding cityscape. Huge window cut-outs
transform the wall into floors and platforms. Bridging
between the walls, they house various public programs
such as a studio, library, and cafeteria. The staircase—
weaving in and out of the window cut-outs, platforms, and
wall surfaces—emulates a path of discovery and wonder.
The plan is organized toward the sheltered platforms and
the atrium, where typical classrooms are located in the
existing bar. The free plan typology translates the typical
classroom into an open experience, on both horizontal
and vertical planes.

Colosseum of KNOWLEDGE
The design is a 8000 sq ft library situated in an urban
space in downtown Los Angeles. The library includes a
book collection area, a video collection area with a reading
platform, and a cafe with gardens. A detailed formal
study of the sculpture “smoke” was conducted prior to
the design. By recording the formal tranformation of the
sculpture, their geometry were drawn out in relation to the
programs on the site.
A wall interventions was initially designed to contribute to
the energy field, the wall performs as a mediator between
two inter-connected activities that wants to operate simoultaneously.
The gesture of using a wall as a linkage of different programs
MEDIA COLLECTION
was then carried on to the design of the Library.
The programs are all stacked vertically into the wall, which left a
clean and open central space for the library. The open central
area encourages all kinds of activities to happen, LIBRARY creating a
ENTRY
stadium feeling like the Colosseum. The placement of a system
of walls provides temporal stops and spacial divider. The LECTURE library

is designed as a cheerful stimulating environemnt.

DIPTYCH HOUSE
The Diptych & kindergarden
This design is about two small dwellings on a site located
in a suburban setting of Los Angeles. The square shaped
house is dedicated to the childrens, and the rectangular
one for the single lady who runs the kindergarden. To be
classified as a diptych, the ensemble of units follows a
two-mass trpology with a garden between them as the
hinge.
The ensemble of the kindergarden starts off on the
same plane and begins diverging at one point creating
a branching sensation. It is a diptych itself as it is made
of four duplications of a single square units, each with a
tiny difference in its carved-out space. Lifting the building
generates a shaded area during the summer and a
open space for more interations between kids. This is
where the classrooms and lunch area combined to form
a huge plaza space. By shifting the floor plates, a series of
terraces emerged providing the occupants with a private
outdoor space. The shift also partitions the house into two
platforms, with
the communal space at the bottoem, and the sleeping/
private area at top with access to the private terrace.
The elevated height provides a more dramatic difference
in circulation in the second floor, where the interconnected
circulation defines the central focus of each unit and becomes
the guiding principle of the interior program (living
room). The end result is a heterogeneous ensemble that
breaks away from the general trend in suburban housing,
and attracts attention to itself and more importantly to the
neighborhood.

This mirroring allows roofs of a piece to perform as a floor, and vice versa.
It allows volume to intersect and conjunct but also retains the diagramatic characteristics
of each piece. New typology is made when new form emerges from union of
different pieces.
The pieces present wihin the boundary of the site gives a clear indication of the rigid
site edge. The slightly unorgenazied plan gives a contrast with the edge. The parts are
flipped to produce a “cave” situation in the center and various edge conditions at the
site boundary.
This strategy focuses on the connection from piece to piece, which allows single part
to form a unified whole. The orientation and attachment of each piece creates differ-
The massing strategy centers around a mirrored GROUND floor plan and second

intersecting volumn. Parts are selected base on abnormality and regularity. They are
repeated, scaled, and rotated to produce new typologies. They are connected by
degree of insersion and oriented by a grid.

A BOX for many distinct PARTS
This design is an addition to the Walt Disney Animation Center ocated
at 500 South Buena Vista Street in Burbank, Los angeles. The
51-acre campus contains the new sound stages, a back lot, and the
Disney corporate headquarters. The design consists of three main
elements, including offices and studios, education and research, and
entertainment and visualization. The offices and studios is a work
space for 50 research incubators. The education and research component
will accommodate a research library, exhibition space, and
production stages. The entertainment facility will host a world class
300-seats theater and more intimate screening rooms. The public
spaces and the lobby is used to connect to the existing Disney complex
and surrounding city.
The main objective is to investigate elemental spatial constructs
structural systems. It will remix architectural types, tropes, and devices
to manifest the idea of type through a compositional approach
in the context of objecthood.
The massing strategy centers cluster of different pieces combined
into a continuous volume and that is flipped up-side-down to produce
a layer of negative space in the center.
The program distribution is based on how tightly and loosely the
pieces come together retaining their iconic character and complementing
its functionality in the program. The nooks and creaks
created in between and at the elevation on all sides act as entrances
from all sides of the site. This brings a unique character to the project
allowing new ways of approaching towards the center where atrium

// VERTICAL university //
// A Book Shelf In The Scale Of The City //
This studio focus on the relationships of architecture
and the city with a close look of the dynamic
and interdependent forces of economics, planning,
ecology, politics, and infrastructure that
have shaped the contemporary city. It is a design
for a large university campus in Mexico City, a
new urban prototype for a university - the Vertical
University.

DIAGRAMATIC FIGURE PLAN
LOUIS KAHN - INDIAN INSTITUTE OF MANAGE-
MENT
It starts with a famous architecture plan (Louis Kahn’s Indian Institute of Management) and rotate it 90 degree to form a
vertical figure, which will be re-intervent into a sectional organization. The strategy is to simply extrude through figurative
form. Considering the contect as the mass of the city which contain a series of specialized figures, the tasak is to project
the content of the city into architecture. By applying an reposition of the horizontal plan and its elements (figure, grid, solid/
void ), the university is understood as a small city, a microcosm of the city in its programmatic form, but as applied to a vertical
organization stratefy - as Alberti said “the city is like some large house, and the house is in turn like some small city.” The
university is a microcosm of the city in its programmatic form.

reordering of a famous university plan - document and
analyze organization as figure ground map - to turn the
university into a vertical typology. Six major constituent
parts are identified based on its particular form and
scale, ranging from XS, S, M to L and XL. Each part belongs
to an individual component of the campus plan.

A NOLLI map is constructed for each part to represent its 3D figures by projecting oblique elevations
from the plan view.
Some plan figures become mass and some become void. The corridor and space between figures in
the plan become a boundary for the field - it produces a gravitational effect on the figure/ground map
or a cropping plane for the grids emanating from the figurse. It becomes a vertical circulation and shelf
between individual parts. As seen from above diagram, the double paneled “shelf” in which all parts
placed in-bwtween them.
