COSTA DEL SOL: HOLY WEEK HOLY WEEK, EASTER LIGHTS UP
Even though it seems like a paradox, Holy Week does not last a week-it lasts a lifetime. It must be felt from within but expressed openly. Holy Week is a time to express your beliefs. On these unforgettable seven days in Málaga, the public’s devout religious beliefs produce some sublime moments creating a surprising balance between the sacred religion in itself and the sacred religious followers. Declared as a tourist interest in the sixties, Malaga’s Holy Week awakes interest from not only its own inhabitants but from outsiders too. For five centuries now, the most devote and intense moments of the Catholic Liturgy with the processions have taken place through the towns and actually outside of the churches. This tradition has the same popular following not only in Málaga capital, but in all the towns of the province. The Penitential Station declared as a tourist interest in the sixties, Malaga’s Holy Week awakes interest from not only its own inhabitants but from outsiders too. For five centuries now, the most devote and intense moments of the Catholic Liturgy with the processions have taken place through the towns and actually outside of the churches. These typical traditions and rituals are not only of historical interest but also from an artistic point of view they are unique and fascinating. The imposing floats take us to the most authentic Baroque Period, swinging images of Christ and The Holy Virgins decorated with flowers and golden lanterns, covered by incense smoke and glorified by devotional song.
